out of the cheapies the HSDs are the best but still far from good coilovers.

i would be goin the whiteline/bilstein group buy though. for an extra $150 or so you can get the bilsteins and swaybars, compared to just HSD coilovers.

bilsteins to expensive d2 are $1320 off my mate same price as HSD or $1720 for tein

Are the aussie teins justas good as jap ones as i remember someone saying they are different for our conditions?

The aussie Tein Super Street's have been revalved and spring rates have been changed. They do feel very good and compliant on the road, adjusted towards the firmer settings is good for track. I run them in mine and my car is very competitive on track.

well G4 cost $1250 group buy

d2 & Ksport 1300 - 1400

hsd $1599 for the HRs

tein $1700

or u can go the for sydneykids suspension setup

id personally save up for the teins or other well known jap brand coilovers as they are the most important part of the cars setup esp for drift

I did this for a magazine article some time ago, the editor hated it because it showed a lot of his advertisers in a bad light. The idea was to take a $1600 coil over kit (not for a Skyline) and break its retail price content down to show what you get for $400 each. Then compare it to a Bilstein, Koni, Whiteline, Kings, combination for $400 per corner

Coil over kit retail price breakdown;

Strut top $60

Bump stop $15

Dust cover $8

Upper spring seat $20

Lower spring seat $15

Threaded sleave/case $30

Spring $80

Shock $172

Total $400

Bilstein, Koni, Whiteline, Kings;

Bump stop $15

Dust cover $8

Spring $80

Shock $297

Total $400

It's easy to see that you get a 75% superior shock value ($172 compared to $297). The cost in a shock is the type of materials used (fairly minor difference) and the valving sophistication (where the real money is spent).

For what you get, Bilsteins are the best value for money.

>_< cheers

Hmmm

I have been running D2 coilovers in my R33 for over a year now. I have yet to have a problem with. My mate which also has an r33 has been running d2 for about 6months+ also without a problem

I personal thing for the price (i pay $1400 Installed) you cant go wrong...

ohh and i've used my car for a few drift days and found the coilovers to be fine...

i guess somepeople have luck with them and others dont

i ran d2's on my s13 when they first came out in north america. I ran them for a total of 20000km in 1 summer, just commuting from toronto to the lakes, bout 600km per trip. I blew the rears out, the fronts clunked and squeeked, the springs rusted. Utter crap.

You can buy a blown set here for under $400.

That being said, they are re-buildable, A friend of mine replaces the springs with QA1 springs, and have the dampeners rebuilt and nobody has had a problem with the rebuilt ones.

For the price of a new set 1200cad now, megan racing makes a better coilover for the same price...i've been told Megan is your BC coilovers.

back to the teins.... the aussies superstreet how do tehy go?

I have aussie super street on my R33 GTS-T S2. They are very comfortable on soft setting for the street. When it goes out on the track i set it firmer (I also have the EDFC) and it is very good. i am consistently 1st or 2nd against other cars with more horsepower. It also depends on what you want to do. If your planning on drifting, Aussie Super Streets are probably not your best option.

If your after a good and reputable brand of suspension you cant go past Tein. I have seen D2's mountings break whilst drifting seals leak etc and in general they are pretty looking cheap Chinese/Taiwanese product mass produced on a small budget for a big gain.

Why not spend the little extra and get a good quality set of Teins. If your interested PM me for a good price!

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
