Hi everyone,

I did a quick search for “oil pressure” but as I am posting under major panic I didn’t come across anything that was relevant to my problem.

As I am currently running my motor in (trying to clock up 500km) I have notice oil pressure drop. I realize that a bit of drop is ok but today when I was at the lights I noticed that the pressure was getting awfully close to 0 on my oil pressure gauge and kept hovering below 2. As I pulled into my driveway I notice the gauge went right down to 0. I quickly switched the engine off to prevent any damage.

My question to the general populus here in FI section is: Is this a normal occurrence? Can anyone hazard a guess to what the problem might be?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

is the "low oil pressure light" on?

No light isn't on.

get an aftermarket gauge.. 1/100th of the price of a new engine

You are right; I'm going to look in to getting one now

before you do anything else, get yourself a new oil pressure sender unit.

Do you believe my sender could be shot? If so I’ll get one from Nissan.

Do you believe my sender could be shot? If so I’ll get one from Nissan.

if its an r32 then it very well could be.

it seems to be a common problem with them.

and as Waz has stated, getting an aftermarket gauge is best (but you'll need a sandwich plate etc). so go with the new sender unit first.

try spray the sender unit with that contact cleaner stuff..

after my engine was put bak in my car i had a similar thing.. when the car was hot the oil needle would sit on like 1psi at random times. the sender unit was all oily and decrepid looking.

go have a read on www.aus300zx.com in the technical pages.. they have a big writeup about changing the OPS (oil pressure sender unit)

many of them changed their unit only to have it fail again after 6 months...

my setup:

gauge (ebay) comes with sender unit - $30-60 depending on what brand

sandwich plate - $25 from justjap

i mounted it in the glovebox. still can use the stock gauge for hte oil pressure warning light (which is accurate)

plus its WAY more accurate than the stock gauge

good investment me thinks

Yeh i had the same problem and i shit myself, on idle after driving for a long time it would drop to just above 1 on the guage but the light didnt come on which was good.

But then i used different oil and it doesnt do it anymore haha, still gets low sometimes though.

I think most 32s have shotty oil pressure guages.

BTW new engine as well with 1,000km on it. New guage is on the agenda.

Thanks everyone for all your help.

I purchased an Autometer oil pressure gauge that I am going to install tomorrow. I'll let you all know if it works. Just one last question though, at what PSI should my oil pressure gauge be reading at idle?

When cold ive seen it around approx 70 psi at idle

When warm around approx 24-25 psi at idle

Thanks champ! I'll use that as a reference point

Please be aware, the standard nissan oil pressure guage reads in KG/cm^2 not PSi.

Yea, I have disconnected the standard one now and installing the Autometer which is in PSI. Thanks for the heads up though!

Cheers

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
