As the topic states, I got a question about when the car is launched. At times, I have launched it from about 4k revs - this has given the best grip, and the actual take off is very smooth and controllable. However, I was in a friends r33 today, and the launch was done at 6k. The strange thing is, there was no wheelspin, but the rear of the car did momentarily dip downwards as the car started to move forward.

Is this normal (the dipping of the rear)? I guess those who have taken their car to the drags etc - is this what normally happens or the car is not supposed to dip at all?

yes, all the weight transfers to the rear wheels, and compresses the suspension, and because all the weight is on the rear wheels, you get much better traction. many drag cars run soft suspension in the rear, and very firm in the front to aid this. sounds like your mates car has better tyres than yours also...

Other way round. Making the front take longer to return from full extension in the shock aids weight transfer - ala 90/10's. Stiffer rear suspension in IRS cars like Skylines stops the tyre from toeing in and decreasing the contact patch at launch.

i launch at 5,500 - 6,500 rpm and dont have much of a traction problem but takes a bit to keep straight off the line, slicks will top it off on a good launch :)

on the street a 5,000 rpm launch with soft throttle is pretty good.

good suspension? and i dump the clutch.. i ride it out at 6,000rpm still spins a little bit, but does launch well.

And as for traction. a 6,000rpm launch on street tyres got me a 1.9 60 footer. :P

Kinda odd that any of you can launch anywhere near 5000+rpm in a gts-t and not get wheelspin....

My car isn't overly powerful at 205rwkw, and there is no way it could launch at 5000rpm without a shit load of wheelspin on street tyres....

Even when it was stock, 5000rpm, and dumping the clutch, or even letting it out slower, would still spin the wheels with ease.

Maybe in a GTR....but really don't see it happening in a GTS-T

ive tried heaps of diff ways of doing it to, like using the handbrake, riding her etc etc..

I have the whiteline/bilstein suspension kit, its not exactly setup for drag racing, but id imagine it should be better than stock stuff.

Once I get my turbo back exhaust system in place I want to take my car for a run down at wsid and see what it can do... But I have a question being that it is an auto would it be better to go from 0 or launch at like 2,000rpm... on stock everything apart from the exhaust once it gets done. Oh and yeah its a 4 door R34 GT-T if that makes any difference.

Maybe someone fryed the clutch?

I think it was a gradual throttle application - I would like to try it myself, but I dont know if my clutch will take it - and as it is, i think the clutch might be on its way out.......

i dont have much experience with this, but even 4k sounds a bit high to me.

if i go at 3k, hold the clutch just at the sweet spot (on the verge of engagement), for only a couple of secs (it starts to smell of burning), i still get some wheel spin.

but my suspension is too hard, and so every bump causes my tyres to lose contact with the road.

but 5k? sounds like a burnout to me. lol

    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.  
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart.     • Well, apparently they do fit, however this wont be a problem if not because the car will be stationary while i do the suspension work. I was just going to use the 16's to roll the old girl around if I needed to. I just need to get the E90 back on the road first. Yes! I'm a believer! 🙌 So, I contacted them because the site kinda sucks and I was really confused about what I'd need. They put together a package for me and because I was spraying all the seat surfaces and not doing spot fixes I decided not to send them a headrest to colour match, I just used their colour on file (and it was spot on).  I got some heavy duty cleaner, 1L of colour, a small bottle of dye hardener and a small bottle of the dye top coat. I also got a spray gun as I needed a larger nozzle than the gun I had and it was only $40 extra. From memory the total was ~$450 ish. Its not cheap but the result is awesome. They did add repair bits and pieces to the quote originally and the cost came down significantly when I said I didn't need any repair products. I did it over a weekend. The only issues I had were my own; I forgot to mix the hardener into the dye two coats but I had enough dye for 2 more coats with the hardener. I also just used up all the dye because why not and i rushed the last coat which gave me some runs. Thankfully the runs are under the headrests. The gun pattern wasn't great, very round and would have been better if it was a line. It made it a little tricky to get consistent coverage and I think having done the extra coats probably helped conceal any coverage issues. I contacted them again a few months later so I could get our X5 done (who the f**k thought white leather was a good idea for a family car?!) and they said they had some training to do in Sydney and I could get a reduced rate on the leather fix in the X5 if I let them demo their product on our car. So I agreed. When I took Bec in the E39 to pick it up, I showed them the job I'd done in my car and they were all (students included) really impressed. Note that they said the runs I created could be fixed easily at the time with a brush or an air compressor gun. So, now with the two cars done I can absolutely recommend Colourlock.  I'll take pics of both interiors and create a new thread.
