i dont think a restricting exhaust will cause pinging but wrong AFR will or also bad fuel

mine pings like yours @ high RPM 3rd and 4th ive goto change fuel pumps see if that helps

i would of said stagea turbo is like the R33 dont go over 14psi or you'll blow the wheels out of it there only ceramic (**just remembered you have high flow**)

cheers

yeah everything is done that needs to be done

will give it a stickful tonight with a fresh tank of Vpower fuel, and listen intently

oh well, will add the Kakimoto 3"muffler I just bought for $65 and have the tune touched up, when possible.

so you reckon a big restriction CAN cause detonation in the higher rpm areas?

been really worrying me.

care to share your thoughts on this? Im only thinking its pinging as it sounds like a tinfull of nuts/coins at high rpm (+5000rpm), like something is loose but I highly doubt that. sat bolt upright in bed on sunday night with the thought that its most likely the sound of dreaded pinging.

yeah, just paid a SAU member $65 for a Kakimoto 3inch exhaust, delivered from WA. was going to go for a Magnaflow, can get a new one for $160 fitted but the wallett is too damned tight atm.

I've really got no idea about the cause of your detonation...was just mentioning magnaflow cos they're good quality and its what I have - it'd remove your restriction but I cant say if it would affect the pinging?

I heard the "dreaded sound" whilst driving interstate - somewhere around west wyalong. Was running on dodgy 96 octane premium unleaded and put the foot to the floor to speed up in a hurry and as it dropped back a gear and the revs climbed and it quickly reached full boost i heard it pinging quite clearly. Driving normally was fine though and once I gave the stagea her favourite drink (bp ultimate) again, all was well

Thats a BARGAIN for the kakimoto exhaust!! Very generous of the seller by the sounds :stupid: all for a good cause!! Good luck with it :glare:

^^

pixel8r hope you don't mind me asking but have the job prospects improved since you've come back to adelaide???

Starting full time permanent employment on monday!! and the wife has had work but also starts new permanent full time job on monday - not bad if you ask me :)

So yeah all good thanks for asking.

The plan is to save some money and take a few courses and move into Linux Systems Admin (most likely Novell CLA/CLE) probably next year at this stage but right now we're both pretty happy to have permanent work ;)

NISSAN R32 GTR BLACK $26,990 - its just a standard 1994 gtr jess (if i remember corectly you were after a v-spec?)

http://www.sinergymotorsports.com.au/thumb...s.php?album=212

It doesnt have to be a Vspec if its a nice car and at the right price..

Thanks :( But want white if I can find a good one

Hey, is your nearly here yet??I bet you cant wait!! :sorcerer:

well done Pixl8r, good work dude.

glad things have sorted themselves out

yeah madaz, not after sound, but meh, need unrestrictive exhaust and the 1hr retune. pinging = bad lol

hey, anyone got a link to an awesome setout for a resume? never done one and Im quitting soon (after 10yrs with the 1 company). need some resume-making advice, guidlines etc. Ive got a lot I can put in, just dont want it to look basic I suppose, never made one before.

You are no longer an 18 year old with no real skills or experience so spend the dosh and get a proffesional to help you write the resume.

Pinging is Pre-IGNition (P-ING) so the problem is with the timing. An exhaust MAY contribute, but unless you changed the exhaust after the tune the problem is with the tune. Send it back and tell them you are not happy. Considering we are in cooler weather now (than mid summer) the problem will only get worse when the heat returns.

Is sounds like your tune was a little to agressive. You may loose some peek power, but I would rather have reliable power every day than a high figure that will severly reduce the life of the engine. (skylines are known to have ringland problems if the tune is to advanced - but otherwise are over enginered)

I've found it to be the opposite. :S

Tune on a warm day mine always pings when the air is really cold.

Tune when its nice and cold and it doesn't ping in the heat.

Mate of mine Antony also found the same when his was tuned on a 30+degree day; came night time it started pinging slightly. Middle of the day air is warm no ping.

But yes.. The tune is too aggressive. It needs to be touched up on the dyno.

A restrictive exhaust will see an earlier onset of detonation as backpressure in the exhaust means there's also more backpressure in the turbo and exhaust manifold. Backpressure = reversion = lowered ve = earlier onset of detonation due to contaminated charge = lower power

I picked it up this morning from the wharfs!!!!!RARARARAR!!!!!!! i did about 50 the whole way to the compliance workshop... i didnt want it to end!

everything has gone soooo smoothly with the importing, just fantastic, everyone has been really good to me. so i couldnt be happier!

heres some pics if anyone else wants a look =)

/me stops showing off, and the pics dont do it justice... quarintine people were like, "wow, is basically a new car under here" as they were inspecting it

i was going to take it home and wash it and play with it over the weekend, but the guys at PVP said to just bring it in. so in about 2 weeks it should be on the road and causing people to re-think their choice of automobile =P

Hmmm thats a worry because mine was also tuned on a ~35deg day!! I (like others) figured I'd at least be safe from pinging.

However I haven't heard any pinging - even in cold weather (love boosting it on cold nights) so hopefully all is well. Has been running like a dream since I had it tuned. Sounds like you may have been unlucky tangles? Hope you get it sorted. You may want to get it retuned with the new exhaust on anyway...

You sonofa bitch! THATS a swoit and noice ride you got there pal, VERY VERY squeaky clean from the outside looks.

I'm looking forward to buying an R34 GTR or 350GT in the near future (if u call 2 years a near future) and keeping my 33 for a bit of fun on the track.

hey 4doorsleeper, good advice, been thinking that perhaps thats the route I should take. didnt realize tho Im not 18. hhmmm when did that happen?

with the pinging, Im not too sure - hey ! :D it might be something slightly loose, perhaps heatshield is only 95% tight, time to have a fiddle. Im pretty happy with the tune/service from boostworx, cant fault it really. But they did inform me they couldnt do much with the top end due to the backpressure from the restrictive lump of a muffler.

welding on a kakimoto muffler and will get a 1hr retune, she'll be sweet.

think the bike will sell soon, 7grand only. but with the 13weeks LSL i get from september, a few months off will help the wife have her wrist surgery, and then take the time to find a good workplace, a new start after a decade in a small 4person business.

doh, always thought it was safer to tune on a low-30deg day.

I dont think the tune is too aggresive - knew before I went in that the muffler would most likely be a problem, its a lump of a thing and very quiet, dense etc, a big restriction when you've got a highflowed turbo attempting to pump out 1Bar. couldnt even flow that much.

Shaun at boostworx said change the muffler and come back for a quick touchup of the tune, that was when I picked it up last month.

fact is, I couldnt be happier with boostworx service etc, definately have no need to go anywhere else.

Im thinking that perhaps something is rattling, just cant see what it is. only happens on hard boost from 5000+, sounds like a rattle like a bolt on tin, but my mind may have led me to wonder if its the sound of detonation?

Just at a guess - could it also be described as the sound of a few nails being tipped onto sheet metal?

Thats kinda what mine sounded like. Heard many different descriptions from people and given that I'd just had my timing advanced a bit as well as having the safc tuned to 12:1 AFR's (up from about 10.5:1, thus advancing the timing a bit more at the corresponding rpm) AND the fact I was running crappy 96 octane country fuel it was pretty obvious mine was pinging. :D

and I'll also mention - fishpaste, you are and will be making a LOT of people jealous with that GTR! Not much not to like about it! :)

    • You will now be able to lift the parcel shelf trim enough to get to the shock cover bolts; if you need to full remove the parcel shelf trim for some reason you also remove the escutcheons around the rear seat release and you will have to unplug the high stop light wiring from the boot. Next up is removal of the bracket; 6 nuts and a bolt Good news, you've finally got to the strut top! Remove the dust cover and the 3 shock mount nuts (perhaps leave 1 on lightly for now....) Same on the other side, but easier now you've done it all before
    • OK, so a bunch of trim needs to come off to get to the rear shock top mounts. Once the seat is out of the way, the plastic trim needs to come off. Remove 2 clips at the top then slide the trim towards the centre of the car to clear the lower clip Next you need to be able to lift the parcel shelf, which means you need to remove the mid dark trim around the door, and then the upper light trim above the parcel shelf. The mid trim has a clip in the middle to remove first, then lift the lowest trim off the top of the mid trim (unclips). At the top there is a hidden clip on the inner side to release first by pulling inwards, then the main clip releases by pulling the top towards the front of the car. The door seal comes off with the trim, just put them aside. The the lighter upper trim, this is easy to break to top clips so take it carefully. There is a hidden clip towards the bottom and another in the middle to release first by pulling inwards. Once they are out, there are 3 clips along the rear windscreen side of the panel that are hard to get under. This is what the rear of the panel looks like to assist:
    • Yes. Autos typically work from the speed sensor on the pinion shaft of the diff. I also think that even if you have a proper speed sensor for the bog manual in the manual box, that the signal it outputs is not compatible with the auto dash anyway. You should consult that manual (the book, not the gearbox).
    • And I just realised that that advice is slightly nonsensical for a GTR, because you need 2 of them. But it is otherwise true.
    • Having had a reasonable look at the car, I'll be able to remove the (one time) rams and retract the hinge (they are held in the down location by a tiny (m3?) sacrificial screw) which will get it physically back in shape. From there if you remove the rams you need a resistor to turn off the airbag light (as Mark said, there are plug in kits and I might go that way because its reversible). And...per all the threads on here, even if you have the resistors to turn off the airbag light, the bonnet light will stay on as it writes to the airbag computer history - that is either replace the airbag controller, reprogam the EPROM (if I can work out how), or remove the globe from the dash. Having seen how sensitive this system is, if I had my time over I'd pre-emptively remove the rams, even on a road car, because this is all a very unnecessary pain in the arse. Reminds me, time to go and have a look at the Fuga too....
