Hi guys, just letting you know the results from putting on the TRUST 710x305x165mm intercooler.

We first ran the car up as is and made 350AWKW

Once we put the cooler on we gained alittle bit of lag(not much) and then we gained 31kw at the wheels.

This to me was a great result.

I then had a bit of time to put on the 4" exhaust to see what would happen.

Yet another 30awkw.

We ended up with 410awkw

If i'm right thats 17% increase.

The car will head back to CRD in the new year. The goal is 500awkw on pump gas.

fingers crossed.

Next mods might be bigger cams and injectors.

Also a big thanks to the guys at CRD for the cooler, The guys at Hypertune for installing and piping up the cooler and also C&V for staying back late whilst we were changing the exhaust.

Cheers

Paul, I believe it.

The thing that most people miss when installing a larger IC is reduction in restriction.

I'll use the analogy of upgrading the stock IC. When people upgrade the stock ic to a fmic, they usually see an improvement in power. The improvement is not so much from an improvement in cooling. Yes, the air will be cooler, but at stock turbo power levels, it doesn't really get that hot. The power increase comes from a reduction in restriction. It is restrictive at that power level.

In this case, at 350awk, the new IC is clearly less restrictive. I don't know if 30 kw is believable, but i would certainly expect some improvement at that power level.

Depending on what the old exhaust was, e.g. if it was a 3" exhaust with a couple of mufflers, a cat, etc, then that result is perfectly valid. Replacing a restrictive exhaust at 350awkw with a less restrictive one will produce significantly higher power levels, because of the larger number to start with.

if he went from a poor mans standard gtst side mount stuck on the side there getting minimal airflow to a better/larger core in the front of the car getting much more airflow then i would agree, but is it really that much of a differenece? 30kw is a massive change, surely something else was changed at the same time?

for a 30kw gain i would have expected something like this;

previous intercooler

compress outlet temp: 70deg

intercooler in temp: 65deg

intercooler out temp: 62deg

new intercooler

compress outlet temp: 70deg

intercooler in temp: 65deg

intercooler out temp: 35deg

then yes i would agree that a gain like that is possible as the air has a significant temperature drop. how bad was the last core ?

Yep, agreed.

its larger, colder, and maybe the new core is of better flowing quality.

I know some one who has avl, they ahd a huge front mount already, and the car put about about 560 at the wheels., he put on this huge F*ck off cooler, of crazy dementions, and no shit, the car put out another 60hp odd. but response was out the window of course, but topend power was more. just cause the air colder = more oxygen.

its a drag vl, so he didnt care.

Paul, like I said above, when doing a power run, the intercooler will not really get that hot, so any improvement in cooling won't be noticeable.

The imrpovement comes from reduction in restriction. The cross area of the new core is significantly larger:

New core: 50325 mm squared

Old core: 30000 mm squared

Hey guys

I'm not going to try to prove anything here, people on this forum know that i wouldn't make up crap.

You gain extra power two ways.

1 less pressure drop across the core(less back pressure on the turbo.

2 reduce inley temps.

this car did have a trust 600x300x100mm core, but the power was dropping off up top.

We thought this was from a restriction of some kind which we thought was the cooler. We also knew that the exhaust would give me about that power because we have tested it before. The other exhaust is a trust unit and we had a cat removal pipe fitted.

I'll see if doughboy would be kind enough to put the photos up today. If there are any serious none believers just call C & V when they open back up.

You could have just run more boost through it, as it’s essentially the same thing. Colder = safer not necessarily more power. If you really did have gains like that, I would have to say your old core was a piece of crap or your advertising for CRD.

Hypertune did the fab work and install

C&V help out with the Dyno

CRD is a TRUST dealer who sold me the intercooler.

We run a TRUST T88-33d.

All we did was change the piping to suit the new cooler.

we already had a hypertune intake and 100mmTB.

AS for we could just run more boost thats right, but first we are getting the car sorted with what we currently have.

I'm not sure what the record for power out of a 33D is but we'll see what we can get out of it.

Also i'm not about to wind up the boost with the new mods when the car has not had a retune.

We want to make hte most out of our engine and turbo set-up, not just wind up the boost and see what figures we can run.

i would rather run more power on less boost, yes it mite cost a bit more but at least we can see what the engine is capable of.

HRMMMM. this could be why im stuck on 307 awkw on 20 psi threw a t04z lol. (stock internal)

yet another thing to add to the list

That power doesnt sound right Dave :P Somethings definately holding your car back

My car is making around 15awkw more than yours at the same boost level with GT-SS's

This is one of the reasons we think our car made bugger all gains changing from GT2530's > GT-RS turbo's

the poor quality core was too restrictive...and was unable to flow the extra air the larger turbo's could provide....mind you it was 120mm thick but the core construction was old school and the newer technology cores flow a lot more air for their size.

Ben we have the same large core on our car (twin entry TRUST 163mm)...they are pricey but are certainly the "ducks nuts"

Well done with the results...see you in the new year mate.

Paul and Stace

Hey Paul,

I was very supprised with the results as well.

I'll drop around to Doughboy\s place tomorrow and drop of the photos .

We also took a video of the dyno run with the 4"exhaust.

Very loud.

Have a good christmas everyone.

Cheers

Ben

    • Plan on the day will be to park trackside. Depending on space availability we will try put a small shade tent and a few of the cars on top of the hill inside turn 3, this is an easy to get to parking area with views of Turn 2, Turn 3, Turn 4 and Turn 5 and limited other pieces of the view around the track. IMPORTANT NOTE! One consideration from previous years is from memory the trackside parking sells out before the admission tickets, for that reason I encourage anyone planning on coming to buy tickets for parking now via the official website; https://www.worldtimeattack.com/ The type of parking you are looking for is 2 Day Park & View (Access Around Venue) Vehicle Pass Only Please note this does not include admission to the event itself, remember to grab that also, and kids under 12 get in for free!
    • This is going to be a mid week evening cruise. Come along and join us for a drive out to Palm Beach. This is a change of event plans after talking to some of the older members of the club.
