Well odds are i wont be able to afford insurance on the ute, and contrary to popular belief i do pay for that kinda stuff myself and not my folks..

Due to my wonderful driving record(haha... *picks himself off the floor*)... it'll no doubt go up again.. last renewal was a lovely $2700.. which i cant afford to continue to pay a year for something thats depreciating in value..

So I thought about it.. sell ute to mate who knows its history and is keen to buy it.. buy an R31 GTS-X import with RB20DET clean it up a touch(fmic, exhaust etc) and then putting rest into my project car..

I'd get a nice reasonably quick(quick enough to beat the v6 brigade) daily and get closer to finishing my pushrod v8 car :)

Point of thread.. i see why you guys complained about insurance so much.. for a 1988 R31 Skyline, SGIO wont touch anyone under 29.. because its an import..

Famous cars will cover it for $2000.. for a $6000 import.. but won't cover me cause of my record(haha knew that would happen) and RAC only list the GX and GXE australian skylines therefore wont touch it either.

Will ring around a bit more tomorrow, but will probably just go third party as bits and peices would be cheap as chips(and i dont intend to crash.. heh).

i know of a guy with heaps of driving offences and accident history but he still got rating 1 from a well known insurer and only recently too .. young age also ... he got a quote from them and has been with them for the past 5 months or so ... so he lied to the insurance company but they have not done anything to check up on what he has said .. but they are still currently taking his money right now!!!

I think i could safely say that they will not honor any claims. Insurance companies are more than happy to take ure money and then give it back to you when they find out that you lied after and incident. I think as a rule they dont investigate any policies until they make a claim and then sort it out from there.

Hey summoner i think RAC would insure your car for around $200 with 3rd party. Its prolly not worth doing any more due to the super high premiums. You still build a normal no claim bonus and u can trash up to 2million dollars worth of stuff :P and they pay for it :P RAC will do 3rd party for almost any car but not full comp.

hey summoner, i have R31 GTS skyline RB20DET, and i cant get insurance at all. not even third party the pack of arse raping thieves. when i turn twenty i can get comprehensive from ONE company for some ridiculous amount and i havent had any crashes, dd etc. but even then no third party which makes no sense at all. they reckon if i crash on third party its too hard to get parts for my car??? but its third party i have to pay for my car and they just cover the poor bastard i hit. makes no sense. hehe and the way ive heard you drive (ie. hard) the RB20 g/box will last about two weeks :P

Sorry to hear it dude.

The RAC is still pissed off with me after paying out such a large claim on the S15 and the cops not managing to find the 3rd party involved. Premiums haven't gone up but have a serious excess now on the missus car. The R is insured through Shannon's.

Best advice is to do what I did years ago and rebuild the driving record by insuring a cheap bunky or std car (such as ya missus car) for a few years.

i insure my hr31 gts coupe thru RAC, not really modded, just has r32 motor and 3". However i dont think they take any new policies on turbo imports.

costs me 1200 a year for a 21 yo driver insured value of 10k with 40% ncb.

i think thats fair - and i didnt have much choice coz no other company wanted to know me

famous would probly be your best bet - mate insures his dr30 rs-x thru them for about 1200 pa also :D

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
