Alonso among world sport's highest earners

Fernando Alonso has in 2007 become the third highest earner in the world of sport, according to reports.

The daily sports newspaper El Mundo Deportivo said the 25-year-old tripled his pay packet by switching from Renault to McLaren Mercedes, and attracted an additional $13m in private sponsorship after winning a successive drivers' championship last season.

Alonso will earn at least (US) $43 million this year, the newspaper said, which ranks him behind sport's top active earners Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, golfers who respectively make $90m and $47m every year. El Mundo Deportivo claims that Alonso made less than $10 million at Renault in 2006.

Meanwhile, the defending champion has baulked at claims that his pace convinced Michael Schumacher to quit F1. Schumacher admitted several times in recent years that he would hang up his helmet when a clearly faster and younger rival comes along. Alonso won the championships in 2005 and 2006.

The Spaniard told Focus in an interview: "Michael stopped because different things motivate him now - such as his family. Anyway, he probably had already decided to retire before the start of the (2006) season."

its the real livery i can confirm. The team is adopting a "green" stance in response to global warming, although how you can link green to F1 remains a mystery to me considering theyve covered 50 thousand odd miles in testing....

i really like the livery. talk about a fresh change in the paddock. that car will stand out like the proverbial come raceday and earn the team some big publicity.

This all explains why the car has been running in testing with the interim black livery. It turns out they were in discussions with the former manager for the spicegirls ( God help us ) over the proposed plan to increase consumer awareness of F1 for the younger generation.

at the very least it will proved something to talk about leading up to melbournes opener in mid march..

heres a link on the website opening on the 27th of feb..

and here are some pics of the car at launch..

It will have to have more sponsors on it than that though? its got nothing but the earth painted on it....

The team is going to invite everyone and anyone to have a microscopic rendition of their name printed onto the car if they so wish. the sponsors names will not be present on the car but will be featured on the website i listed.

you can count on the fact that at best this deal will have a 1 or 2 race limit from which time Honda will have chosen a more traditional livery.

they definitely wont be going the whole season looking like that.

just think back to the monaco GP when Red Bull decked the team out in Star Wars livery complete with C3PO and Chewbacca.

that was only a one race deal. dont be surprised when the same thing happens with the honda team.

    • If you take the top half of the intake off you can unbolt the flap off the shaft and leave the shaft in there blocking the hole. Then you can remove the little vacuum canister off from under the manifold and get a spare vacuum line to run to the ECU. I can take some photos of it later. Probably best to get the vacuum source to the ECU sorted first though. Mine all worked mint with the base map from the GTT an I've pretty much let the closed loop sort the fueling and took 1 degree out of the whole timing map.
    • This IS something you also have to configure in Haltech (or at least I did in the past when going from onboard-to-ECU map sensor and an external MAP sensor in haltech land).
    • I'm hoping it's something as simple as the ECU is looking for an external MAP sensor, but he is trying to use the onboard MAP sensor.
    • You won't need to do that if your happy to learn to tune it yourself. You 100% do not need to do that. It is not part of the learning process. It's not like driving on track and 'finding the limit by stepping over the limit'. You should not ever accidently blow up an engine and you should have setup the ECU's engine protection to save you from yourself while you are learning anyway. Plenty of us have tuned their own cars, myself included. We still come here for advice/guidance/new ideas etc.  What have you been doing so far to learn how to tune?
    • Put the ECU's MAP line in your mouth. Blow as hard as you can. You should be able to see about 10 kPa, maybe 15 kPa positive pressure. Suck on it. You should be able to generate a decent vacuum to about the same level also. Note that this is only ~2 psi either way. If the MAP is reading -5 psi all the time, ignition on, engine running or not, driving around or not, then it is severely f**ked. Also, you SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING IT WITHOUT A LOAD REFERENCE. You will break the engine. Badly.
