Been a lurker for quite some time and then disappeared to bike forums for a bit.

Was quite decided on getting a sports bike, however a GTR (32) was always my dream attainable car, for the next 6 months or so im saving my ass off, im in the defence force and the fact that i will be living on base etc etc.. money will be able to be saved quite rapidly. Before i make my mind up i thought i would throw in some more info and some questions.. I will be on a 45k salary in a couple of months, i dont drink, i smoke socially (will throw the habit) and generally not too much of a big spender.. Am 19 and want to enjoy myself, anytime i can be posted overseas, i want to make the most of it.

I've never been in a moving gtr, let alone driven one but ever since i've been 9 or so i backed up the line in school car arguments >_< .. I know a fair bit about them but have experienced little of them  Don't know how they feel under boost :/ Im hoping to budget atleast 30k on car, any things which need to be fixed and insurance. But before i take the plunge i was hoping that someone from sydney would be willing to take me for a drive in there GTR, of course me covering fuel and any expenses? Would be greatly apreciated.

Are they a money pit on maintanance, insurance and general costs etc..

wow.. it's 6.30am >_< research

Tomek if you're RAAF (ie. Richmond/Western Sydney) there are a few guys that could help out. I have a GTR and used to ride sports bikes.

Shoot over a PM with your details and we might be able to work something out. We can also talk running costs etc.

Cheers

Mark

i dont own a GTR, but have read alot, and just about every owner i've ever come across says the car is indeed a money pit (but worth it most of the time) there are however a few who say that its never cost them money, and although its a nice thing to hear, i dont know if its a realistic expectation?

i do own a 32gtr. i would say that if u havnt spent any money on a gtr, then jeez u must be the luckiest car owner ever! im talking about little things like steel coolant piping, rubber hoses (that are damn near impossible to get to)

little annoying things that keep the car running. or things like speedo calbes... they are a pain in the arse!

then theres drivers issues. like trying so hard to keep under the speed limit... the cars just wanna go.

in the end, is it worth buying a gtr?

yes a massive money pit.

yes its WAY too easy to speed in it and you can be like a lot of gtr drivers (suspended or lossed license)

yes its worth it!

if your easily up to get shipped to anywhere around the world then get a bike, easy to transport easier to maintain. but hey if you really want a gtr then im sure you can work things out shipping it around or having it looked after by your mum cause everyone else will be tempted.

R32's are getting pretty old these days. And the chances are, that the car was first thrashed in Japan by the original owner, and then thrashed again by the last two or five previous owners here in Australia.

Let's be realistic. People do not buy a GTR to putter around at 50 Kmh, and drive to the bowls club twice a week, then to cash the pension check on Thursdays, and then to church on Sundays. The bloody thing has been clutch dumped at 8,000 RPM hundreds of times, and probably seriously pranged a few times too.

A really tired R32 GTR is going to be a money pit. If you want a cheap to run and reliable GTR with no problems, get a mint condition low mileage R34 GTR, if you can find one.

R32 GTR's are cheap for a reason..............

yeh id say gtr just cause im a fan, have been on some quite quick bikes vtr sp1,cbr 900 etc as my dad owned them they where a buzz even as the passenger but he only ever rode them in summer or on very good days, hence the sale of them and he bought a wrx.

my gtr would have cost me not a real lot sense i owned until i started modding it.just shop around and try find the best 1 out,do not rush in and buy the 1st one ya drive as it might feel quick but might infact be a bucket when ya drive a good 1.

good luck anyways..

p.s a mate of mine owns r32gtr and he live at raaf base in richmond..

A 20 to 25 grand 32 would be a silly buy in my opinion if this turned out an honest car negotiated to around 30 grand.

Hey, I love my 32's and have owned GTR's but they're just getting so old, which is not good if you're like alot of us on here who like to keep them looking and driving brand new. No GTR deserves NOT to be treated like the king it is.

I have an 89 model that is on the original clutch, gearbox, motor and turbos. It has never missed a beat in two years. The entire compulsory maintenance history for me is:

new clock (this month)

new battery terminals (last month)

aircon regas (last year)

front/rear pads (Jan 06)

front/rear rotors (Jan 06)

gearbox reverse lockout spring (Dec 05)

sill panels (after forklifted in Japan)(Jun 05)

Everything else has been fluids or buying newer (better condition) parts like OEM steering wheel etc. I have spent more on my 626 than on the GTR.

So, I disagree dude.

i also diss agree.as mine has only had water pump and timing belt which was dew on the 80xxxx mark.

other than was still on the stock clutch turbos until recent time where i removed to install bigger and stronger parts. if u can find a top condition one and dont mind the few odds and ends to fix why not.

its not maintanice thats cost me its modding the dam thing

I do realise that these cars are cheap to buy but costly to maintain. I wasn't dreaming of buying one anytime soon, however now that i have calculated my finances and have realised that i can afford to have one so early i may aswell jump on it... Your only young for how long and you need to realise that your life can end whenever, i can be sent overseas in the next 6 months and anything can happen which is my reasoning i guess :) and the fact i've wanted one for so long..

Call me stupid but i don't want a stocker, as the money shed into it to getting it where i want it to be can be saved by buying an already built one.. Realistically.. if i were to save longer and budget my finances to say 35-40k on the car would it be possible to import a late model 32 v-spec with some nice work done to it, brides, 4 point harness, oil coolers etc the works so that it would be ready for track duty? What would be my best market to look in? Im thinking j-spec or some local sydney tuning companies?

    • Initially I thought having a pair of Recaro seats would be a big bonus, it turns out these do get a little uncomfortable on long journeys (my fault, not the seat). I had a look through the GSM Performance website at reclining seats and booked an appointment to visit their show room. I got the Recaro Sportster CS for the R34 from here, was very happy with the service received so of course a re-visit was in order. Unfortunately the two Corbeau seats I had chosen aren't on display but they had 4 other options available. Two seats dug into my back, one dug into my legs and the other was perfect. I also found out that Recaro seats use a larger bolt pattern so some adaption was required. Luckily GSM offer some universal adaptors that should solve this problem. I searched the interwebs for price comparisons and Corbeau themselves were the cheapest at £300 cheaper (for the pair). I asked GSM if they could price match, unfortunately they couldn't. I later received an email saying Corbeau would honour them the same discount, but the purchase was already made. I did however order the brackets from GSM, both arrived on the same day. I started with the passenger side seat, knowing this was going to be a little trial and error. There are 3 mounting holes at the front and 2 at the rear on these JURAN Racing seat rails.  With the adaptor brackets mounted, the allen cap bolts started to push into the seat, NOT GOOD!  The rear mounting holes lined up but there were issues at the front. The holes were 1/2 hole out, so the brackets got a tickle with the drill to modify the holes. The supplied bolts weren't going to be long enough and a spacer was needed to stop the adaptor bars from bending. A local fasteners company supplied be with some nylon spacers and longer bolts (M8x30, although these will be replaced with 35mm long shortly) A before and after I pre-drilled the front bracket before making a start on the driver's seat to save some time. And in no time at all that was in the car too. The all black seats have transformed the interior and these are MUCH more comfortable. The only downside with the new Corbeau seats is I sit a little higher, but I'll happily accept that over discomfort. The Youtube video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPyttKPktXA
    • All 3 I guess. The car came with the JASI Aero 4 door Type R Full Kit unpainted so this was one thing at the top of my list to complete then I noticed there were body panels parts for this kit so i picked them up along with some black mesh to fill in the front bumper and front side air vents. car is at a paint and body shop atm completing this work. Next I will be addressing the internal bells and whistles, great summer project I can do with the kids.  full interior removal - ,boys car sound deadening - pads and spray ,boys stereo, sound, lighting - Big 3, GTT or bigger alternator ,kids head lining - dye black add star lighting mod ,daughter. That's it for the next 5-6 months. I have some motor maintenance  work i have to plan out. oil filter relocation, gaskets, mounts. beyond that, mind is starting to turn over if i can use a DET intake plenum, block off turbo ports & pipe in a air intake.
    • roller coaster of a ride. Alarm system was removed & main harness was repaired where possible. still no fix just random successful starts. moved on to the replacing the ignition switch and relay. well all this troubleshooting & repair has been going on, the car is at a paint and body shop being pushed around. Ive been going down there on odd days after work to get it sorted.
