One of my mates and i are looking into buying a car and driving everywhere once we get there. Anyone got any thoughts on that idea?

Impossible... Due to parking rules etc etc. Unless you own a parking space in Japan already..

Having a car in/around Tokyo is more pain than gain. No parking + insane traffic + road tolls + really strict DUI = no fun. Take the train

having driven a fair bit in tokyo now I'd say you are dreaming. buying a shit car is not going to have english navi (in fact hardly any car with have english navi standard) so you will have next to zero chance of navigating your way in the city. driving home one morning to the apartment in roppongi at 5am on the freeway was a trial. half asleep and driving on an elevated freeway with exits every few hundred meters and a fairly high speed limit means relying on the navi which still gets it wrong sometimes. I was lucky my place was right next to tokyo tower so I could just use it as a landmark to guide me home. but that may not be any help to you.

train is fantastic. there are trains and subway trains everywhere. the only downside is they stop around 12:30am.

I would never do that and ive been living here for a while now. waste of time/ waste of money/ it would be a huge headache and a waste of the trip.

take the train way easier. theres a reason why the train system is so good and why most japanese people use it to go everywhere.

Who do you go through and where do you stay Nick ?

I usually purchase flights and accomodation via Flight Centre, and stay in Chiba for a while around Autosalon time, then shift into Shinjuku to be right in the middle of the action.

There are plenty of great and not so great hotels around - Which one you select really depends on your budget.

My mates and I (6 in total) want to go to Japan for the Toyko AutoSalon in 2008 too. As this is the first we will be going to Japan can someone advise us on the best places to stay, transport (i have read some of the replies and it seems rail is the best mode), rough costings (i have read 3400 previously), anything we should see while we are there.

We would like to go a week before AutoSalon to see some sites, some drifting and maybe go to an autobak (super car parts stores) (i think thats what they are called) :)

And if anyone has any recommendation I am all ears!!.

Cheers

There is a lot of good information within the Japan subforum for you, have a good read.

In a nutshell, $3400 was a rough price from a few years ago which included return flights to Tokyo, taxes, insurance, accomodation for around 12 nights, and rail pass. Where you want to stay in terms of proximity to Tokyo, and the quality of the place you choose to stay will dictate what your paying per night.

Regarding stores, Super Autobacs is great for a look if you have never been there before, the Tokyo Bay store is one of the more impressive with the Tommy Kaira dealership out front, but is is very expensive and the stores generally don't carry much in the way of actual performance parts in stock, most is order only.

Seeing some street Drifting, well that depends if you have any contacts that know the scene and can drive you around as without knowing anyone, or knowing your way around Tokyo, and not having a car, the chances of you stumbling across some drifting of an evening are virtually zero.

Give us some idea of your budget and how long you intend to be there for and either myself or one of the other regulars can give you some more information that might help you :)

Well the budget of around 3400 on accomadation, flights, taxs and anything arriving and departing Japan sounds reasonable. I dont might spend more money in japan for food and attractions.

The drifting I was hoping that we could get down to an organisied event but i wouldnt might seeing street drifting.

Well we where hoping on getting there a week before AutoSalon so around 4-5th of January and leaving around the 20th of January but these dates are not 100% so they will most probaly change

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
