Depends what it involves man.

E.g. whether he can just use an easy out with everything still in the car, or whether all th eintake piping has to come off, turbo off, manifold off too.

Why do you care if a stud is broken? Is it leaking exhaust gas?

Yeah its leaking.Performance has dropped big time.

1000 is a bit steep. look at it this way

mechanic has approx 4-6 hours work putting on/off all components to get to it. so that would be probably $300 mark

than a thread repair guy will come to extract broken stud, $50 to $500 depending how many/what damage has been done/time spent blah blah

that materials will cost you about $200 ($120 for exhaust gasket, $45 for turbo one, $2 each stud and $2 each locknut all from nissan)

so really shouldnt be no more than $800 at most considering you dont need to pay thread repair guy $500

mine all up was $700 including parts, labour etc.. thread repair guy said he has never seen anything so bad in his life ($350 he charged) so im guessing yours aint that bad

people have done it themselves and it only cost them the gaskets plus some ezy-outs so depends really...

How confident are you in doing it yourself, thats what i did the only thing that cost me was gaskets 1 stud and to pay threadtek to come and get it out (90) and plus you can get the exhaust gasket cheaper than that and not in nissan oh and studs well $1 each and $1 for locknut, over took him 10 mins tops to get it out, the first stud is cheap, but sometimes you may brake more than one when you remove the manifold. .

$1000 is still dear as. all in all took 3 hours tops to remove and fit manifold including time of threadtek.

fun and games tho good luck

What mechanical experience do you have?

What is the biggest thing you've done on the car? have you ever done the turbo before?

Do you have car stands? Decent trolley jack?

Good socket set and spanners? breaker bar?

24mm socket? 24mm spanner?

Once you take the turbo off, you'll need new coolant too (about $50).

Got a lock up garage?

Is it your only car? can you affor dto have the car off the road for 2 weeks?

Do you have time, or can you only work on it on the weekends?

Keep in mind part shops mostly open weekdays only.

Not doubting you in anyway, but just tryin gto make sure you understand what you're getting yourself into.

Things always take longer than you expect

Its always fun to do it yourself, I only broke one stud lucky in my case but 4 others just came out of there sockets so i still replaced them, usually the ones that brake are either ends of the manifold 3 near cyl 1 and 3 near cyl 6 WD40 always helps, and where are you located?? Also it shouldnt hurt much if you drive it around with just the one broken, just poor power and no boost if its leaking.

Also ring up your mobile thread tech that are able to drive to your house and remove it for you for a quote on "x" number of studs, Unless you have access to a right angle drill, air compressor and easy outs as these things come in handy when doing something like removing studs, Or 12v drill, stud tap, and easy outs will also do the job, but there isn't too much room either end of the manifold. You will guage what i mean when you do it yourself.

Oh dont forget to clean those metal filings away either they can be nasty. And get the tools and bits n pieces before you start it makes it alot easier as well.

The gasket, you can locate an aftermarket one for less than 100 give repco a call they may help you here.

You get many things from doing these yourself, Experience and knowledge of repair giving a sense of self achievement and also money saving.

Cheers

all i say is have someone handy (like a thread repair guy who can come over) to pull the studs out if you cant, that will probably be your biggest problem but apart from that should be okay if u have the tools and not too bad with your hands

and to answer your question above, i got my mobile mechanic to do the work and another mobile guy came for the threads

I got "Action thread repairs" to come and get my broken studs out - there were 3 broken and 1 more broke getting it out. He charged less than $100 including all new studs --> AND he is also mobile so came to the workshop where i had my car stored. Just required that dump pipe and turbo was removed so he could get in there.

Yea 1k is very expensive for exhaust manifold stud removal... the studs are like $4-$6 each... but the labour involved is what is going to hurt... but 1k... f**k you'd want them to rip out your motor and do it on the bench for that much lol...

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.

    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
