Problem With Whiteline Bump Stop/dust Boots

Recommended Posts

Had my car on the hoist at home today as i dialed in my tomei cams when i was under the car putting radiator back in i was checking stuff out under the car and i noticed that 3 of the 4 dust boost have come off the bump stops. On closer inspection i noticed that there are markings on the bump stops it seems the shocks are coming in contact with them. once this happened it forced the dust boot all the way onto the shock jamming it.

I have the shocks on the standard height setting with king spings (not sure if they are low or super low or what not as they came with the car) Do you think i need to raise the car 1 notch or 2 notches on the circlips?

did you cut the bumpstops in 1/2??

a mate and i have the same problem with the dust covers, they get a little tight around the shock and get pulled down and off the bump stops. i got in contact with gary and told me that it was just an isolated incident and the x amount of people who've bought this setup haven't had problems. apparently not.

i've zip tied the dust covers onto the bump stops and that seems to work a little, the bottom of the dust covers still gets caught on the top of the shocks, rather than around them. i think longer dust covers are required.

this is all of course on the recommended 345/355 height setting

Yea mine are cut more then in half, as in I cut more off so the bump stops are tiny (cut in accordance to SK picture). Im not sure if mine need to be longer, i almost think needs to be shorter! As the 3 of them were pushed all the way to the spring platforms. I was thinking about gluing the boots to the stops?

my car is more like 320mm i think so quite a bit lower.

320 mm is too low, bump stop contact is unavoidable at that height.

If you want to run it at that height (not advisable) then you will need to trim the dust cover. At the moment it is too long and being trapped on the shock shaft.

:D cheers :)

gary,

are the dust covers supposed to fit a little loosely around the shock? (i.e. the shock slides up and down within the dust cover)

or is it supposed to be relatively sealed? (i.e. the dust cover compresses and extends with the shock, whilst remaining held onto the bump stop and the top of the shock?)

i was thinking of lubricating the top are of the shock to allow the dust cover to slide around easily - but i think this will only accumulate more dirt and grime.

any ideas? it's not really doing its job if it keeps falling off.

Mine did the same, the original front dust covers I had were ok so I put them back on. The problem with mine is it stays on the bump stop and sometimes pulls it down a bit. The major problem is in the wet it makes an annoying noise as the rubber pops on and off the shock body.

Back from the dead to report same problem - I took the dust boots off as they were completely useless. Both front and rear are a poor fit and neither seal nor slide easily over the shock body. I am at correct height 345mm front 340mm rear.

The proper Bilstein covers or ones that can be zip-tied to bottom and top would be much much better.

I just replaced my shocks and springs and I bought the dust covers from Pedders. I think they were for their 4WD shocks or something but they were a pretty good fit. Long enough to go from the bump stop to over the shock near where the springs sit. It was kind of hard to get them over the shock but some vaseline did the job. I cable tied them as well and so far they have not moved and they had some play in it. Something to think about....

Just thought I'd add something to this thread, I have now installed a set of genuine Bilstein dust boots.

I bought the shocks from one company, but they couldn't supply the dust boots, which I thought was a bit strange. I later found out when I went to a workshop here in Adelaide called Manta Racing that only official suppliers of Bilstein shocks can supply the dust covers.

The boots I was supplied did require minor modification to fit over the original bump stops (they initially caused the bump stop to pop off of the support washer so I chopped the top of them off), but they are made out of a very tough compound that I doubt will fall appart like the originals.

As far as replacement bump stops go, I only found superpro's for the rear could be used & that dust cover they have is useless/too small so you'd ditch that bit of them.

I just ended up just trimming back the original cover/bumpstop assembly so I could fit the new ones over the top & am satisfied with the result.

    • The 4WD version is harder to find so I compared the parts diagrams of the two https://nissan.epc-data.com/stagea/whc34/5414-rb20de/engine/172/17453/ and https://nissan.epc-data.com/stagea/wgnc34/287-rb26dett/engine/172/17201/ seems like the same part is called out: 17201...what with WHC34 tank work?

    • I finally got it on the dyno today and luckily it stayed in one piece! It wasn't without its dramas though. First off, sent my power steering belt to the moon around the third pull. Scared me half to death. Tuner laughed and mentioned that often happens with RB's... I may need to look into adding the Ross power steering idler, or something a long those lines.  Second issue that came up was about 2 hours in, we realized the VCT wasn't working and had to go back through the timing and knock threshold once it was fixed (I had botched setting up VCT). That waisted a good hour or so. I was surprised to see that with VCT working, we saw a ~38rwkw difference across the powerband. More then I would of expected.  Without further ado, made 463rwkw@27psi. Not the numbers I originally set out after, but still more then enough to kill myself and I'm very happy. Mustang roller dyno's are known to be heart breakers compared to other dyno's. Two things that limited me, first was the hydraulic lifters/7600rpm cut. Tuner was adamant that I was losing out on a lot of power up top because of it. Second was the pump gas & WMI. He wasn't 100% comfortable tuning with WMI, and was honest about it. He stated he's more confident on E85/Race gas. I look at this as a positive as it leaves me a lot of room for improvement. All in all, very happy! I need to see what I can do about that rev limiter... I use to rev my stock RB20 to 8000rpm and now I have a fully built head that I only rev to 7600... It's bugging me.  Don't mind my fantastic picture/filming skills.  RB28 - Dyno (1).mp4
