Hi all

I am about to upgrade my camshafts. I was looking at the HKS 272/10.20 on both sides. I am getting conflicting evidance about the drop in ability of these cams.

I am being told that as long as they are no more than 272 duration and less the 10.25mm lift i am ok. is this true?

I am also looking at definetly fitting HKS springs to match.

Also looking at getting tomei bronze guides and JUN titanium retainers. Good idea to change the olds gear anyways.

Are those parts drop in?

any help is very welcome.

With cams of that size, you really want upgraded springs, and with the sort of power you would want to be producing to want cams that large you really need a built motor, so not really a drop in prospect,. If you want cams to drop into a stock internal motor, i would be looking at some poncams, or hks 256/264's

If by 'drop-in' you mean 'will fit without clearancing' I don't think so. Pretty sure they have

the std. base circle and my understanding is that anything with std. base circle and over

9.5mm lift requires clearancing for the lobes.

I'm currently having the same HKS 10.2mm cams installed and the head is currently off

being clearanced. I didn't personally check whether they'd rotate; but I'm presuming that

the engine builder's not doing unnecessary work :D

If you go for something with a smaller base circle and the same lift you might get away without

head work but you will need different lifters; you might find that the price of those may well

offset the cost of the head work (if you buy a named Japanese brand) ...

9.15mm of lift is pretty much the limit. It's not hard to remove the extra material for lobe clearence if you are careful however.

Those HKS units are really suited to higher rpm use, as people have suggested extra beefing up of the valve train will be need in terms of springs etc.

You are rebuilding the motor? I think you will want to if those cams are matched to the right turbo hardware, you are talking decent rpm and power and an old R32 engine is not going to live for a very long time.

There really isn't any 'true' drop in cam for the Rb26 engine given you are talking solid lifters that need shims to get clearences where they need to be. Expect to fork out money for shims and you won't be dissapointed either way. The most luck people have had is with Tomei units in terms of not having to buy the odd shim, and when I say luck thats what I mean.

Just out of curiosity, how much do shims usually cost?

thank guys. At this point in time the bottom end is stock (than agin with the test that have been done no one can realy be sure, some strange results). I am not looking for high rpm. I am looking at getting as much lift as possible. if i can get a cam with about 10mm lift and under 270 duration, that would be great. I am going to get springs either way. also want to get new guides and retainers. powers wise I am not looking any more than 500hp @ wheels. thats more than enough for alot of fun in these cars (well for me anyways). I will be building a motor in the next few months but for now I am slowly buying all the gear for that. Right now I have funds available for the work i described above and carilo rods (damn they cost alot).

so can you drop in guides and retainers to?

Leave the top end alone till you are ready for the full rebuild at least you don't have the risk of wrecking things you could otherwise use if you are leaning on the stock bottom end with anything more than 370rwhp, forget 500rwhp thats a hand grenade. If it's only a few months away save the money till then.

You 'can' run those sort of power figures on a stock Rb26 but, on higher km ones it shortens the life of them very rapidly, they ultimately fail because the motors weren't put together to live at that sort of power level.Although there are plenty of people to tell you otherwise (a few friends are running over 400), better safe than sorry.

With the tomei poncams is this sorta effort needed ie new springs, retainers, guides etc what about the bolts for the cam bearing holders?(not sure what you actually callem) are they like headbolts and need too be replaced, have been wondering especially about the springs this seemed like a good thread to ask in, sorry for the hijack.

I think I had to replace 18..

Why look for high RPM if you dont need it? Or have the motor capable of running added RPM?

I dont see the point to be honest.

Better off with cams better suited and a more reliable target (on a stock bottom end)

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
