a week or so ago i started hearing a noise when ever the input shaft was spinning, so i went to get it checked out today. diagnosis is as expected, need new bearings.

would it be cheaper to get a new box or replace the bearings?

also would there be anyone from here that could lend a hand in either changing the bearings or replacing the entire box?

I'm pretty sure the input shaft bearings are gone on my 32 GTR, but when i asked Croydon about it they didnt seem to think it was a big deal, as i'm not making that much power (240awkw). That was a year ago....but i'm gentle with my baby.

A 32 GTR box sold on ebay recently for $670. Just jap used to (and may still) sell new ones for $3200.

Mines been doing it for over a year, i'm going to rebuild it after the track day..

I got a quote from Gearbox Factory, $1100 + gst for a full rebuild, this included pulling it apart, sand blasting and replacing bearings + seals + (I think synchro's)

Personally, rebuild it, that way you KNOW what condition it's in... + you'll get a warranty - 6 months..

how noisy is it ? if its only just starting to make a sound then dont worry about it. they can make a noise and still work fine for ages and ages. its only when they get REALLY noisy when u worry about it

they are simple to remove but unless you have a press and suitalbe tools dont expect to change the bearings yourself.

So could you use a large vice in place of a press? What other special tools? I wouldn't mind trying to rebuild it myself.

  • 3 weeks later...

are you talking about the spigot bearing, because mine was making a noise....and i put a new clutch in and spigot an thrust bearing, and its fine now....if its just the spigot bearing it aint gunna cost u much at all, fairly easy removeal to, once the gearbox is out

chances of pressing apart a main shaft in a vice are very slim.

Ive had the press buckling and then had to heat the rings up in the past.

There are proper pullers that need to be used to prevent damage to bearing surfaces and soforth.

Seriously gearboxes are not really the sort of thing you overhaul at home without the correct tools.

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
