Also have a look in the gallery on that site i linked above, has some different designed cages to give you a few ideas.

Cams approved cage bent up for a series 6 RX7 cost about $900 for material and all bends and cuts, then you need to weld it all in ... it might be cheaper for other cars due to the rx7 being a complicated design. that was from a places in Mc Graths Hill NSW

Craved i've discussed with Eddie (p.c.e) about rollcages in the last week and will probably be getting him to do a basic 4 or 6 point cams design sometime in the next <3mths. Actually he's doing 1 for a DR30 and 180SX right now at the shop.

Think he said the seamless costs him $26/m where as he can get a full length of exhaust tube for less then that.

i have payed $26 a meter for 2" 304 stainless pipe for exhausts.. so that seems pretty cheap. its the mandrel bending thats the really hard part, without spending alot of cash on a hydrolic/electric bender.

if u wanna make it real awesome weld some bars that join up all the strut towere through front firewall etc. Maybe even rip out dash and weld a new support bar through the dash replacing the stock one. Goodluck and post some pics

No point doing it if it isn't going to be done properly, likely to just inflict more harm on yourself.

I dont think you could stress that pioint enough if you tried :)

A poorly made/designed cage is MORE dangerous than not having one at all.

IMO - Your better off paying someone who knows what they are doing.

For ~ $700-800 you can have a 4-point fitted in mild steel to a skyline. Which, for your own personal safety, is absolutely nothing.

You might save a few hundred with DIY, but if its not correct, your more likely to die or permanently maim yourself in the event of an accident than if you had no cage at all.

ben the one you posted won't pass, it needs at least 1 diagonal, normally between the b pillars although I've also seen a-b and b-c on opposite diagonals. You don't need the horizontal bar between the b pillars for the rules but it is a good addition

we are doing this atm, the main problem is mandrel bending the main hoop (b pillar) you can't use a normal pipe bender it will crush it too much losing the strength.

The other main trick for CAMS is you are only allowed to have 1 bend on the front legs so you need to go through the dash, you can't bend around it.

And if you don't think strength at the A pillar/roof is important think again

That wasn't the 'exact' design im going to get but it was the closest I could find on google in 3mins at the time.

My exhaust mechanic does the cages, he has a normal pipe bender but for those b-pillar bends he uses a mechanics machine up the road from him, the rest he can do on his pipe bender. Not sure on costs yet because I haven't even got my panel damage repaired yet (even though I have half of it in primer :P)

;) Having my non abs s.wheel go through my skull, as well as worrying bout a tube from a snapped home weld isnt on the cards.

*thinks* wheres that home made helmet thread :P

Heress a link that will no doubt assist in this roll cage

http://www.metalgeek.com/cgi-system/php5.c...tatic/cope.pcgi

it will determine the cut required to closely join tubing in order to have a neat joint and allow good welding.

  • 4 weeks later...

hey guys! my old man, at seven hills has all the tubing u will require to bend/build ur cage.

call him on: Rod Andrews - 9838 0032

and say that i put you onto him for some chrome moly or mild steel for a cage!

he has a bender there too, and we have done 1000's of cages since the shop opened in 1989.

so talk to him if you have any queries, make templets out of cardboard to suit ur roof profile and "b" pillar for your main hoop! and start workign form there. and if you want it cams or andra approved or any other racing approval, check with the governing body before attempting to BODGY one up!

Garth

    • I'm not a big fan of the Cometic gaskets either, as above the head and deck need to be like a mirror (can't remember the RA) so Kamieri sounds like a good idea.  FWIW a mate of mine hordes old motor stuff and has some blank unground Nizmo cams for one of these in his supply if random shit if you're interested.
