My Oil pressure varies between 2-6 on the standard gauge in my R34.

I have a GReddy Oil Cooler fitted on the car.

When i come to my driveway and start to brake, why does the oil pressure drop from around 4 to 2?

Is this bad? or is this normal for the pressure to drop when under brake?

And what are the cons of high/low pressure. Is there such a thing as one being better than the other?

I take it that pressure will vary on conditions (idle/throttle) etc but don't know the "optimum" pressures if there is such a thing.

Just hope that 2 - 5 is not going to damage my engine?

mate, if your oil pressure changes when you brake it is surging around your sump - very dangerous.

Most likely your oil level is low unless you have a race car with great tyres and are stomping on the brakes real hard.

At idle it should be at 2ish when the motor is warm and as high as 6 when it is dead cold - will vary a little depending on the grade of oil you run. On top of that it will increase with revs.

first thing, the stock gauge is relatively accurate, BUT it is mega slow in reacting. considering when you are braking you are most likely not on the throttle, and possibly not even in gear which means your revs are around 1000rpm which means oil pressure of around 2 bar is normal.

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same.     • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
