It only does it on the 33s :D they have a clear plastic panel

you can do it on the 32s, but you'd need to cut out the skyline lettering and replace it with a light in behind it and perspex

or create a custom EL one

I'd go for the custom EL one :P

some R32's were sold with a factory EL lightup panels on the back, which were stuck on top of the bumper (over where the factory one is embossed). you can mod it with LED's (as most of the EL sheets are f**ked now after 12 years of use).

here's mine:

you gotta buy the panel though, and they're as rare as rocking horse shit.

wire comes up from under the car, there's a rubber grommet under your spare wheel where the wire comes thru. yours probably dosen't light up for the same reason as mine which was the EL's busted after more than 10 years of use.

hot air gun (or hair dryer) the glue between the panel and bumper and slowly use a blade to cut the double sided tape off. Be careful when taking the panel off, its really brittle and can snap in two very easily. Once its off, mod it with a new EL sheet or high brightness LED's and reattach it back on.

i made a thing up like this for my 180 years back after i saw a GT starlet with a factory one. i was going to do it to my 33 but was too lazy. just make sure the light is either green or red (preferably red) or you may get shafted by the cops. making it blue will definately get you attention from the cops.

Dont know about other states but in Tassie you cant have blue or red as they are the emergency colours

I got pinged for having green strobes (would light up a solid ring around the wheel whilst moving) on my old gixer a couple of years ago :)

Speaking of the panels though there were a couple on EBay the other week so i would keep your eyes on there if you dont want to mod your own :(

funkymonkey that looks off the hook man! really good, i have a r33 s1 so it has the clear 'skyline' @ the back you think it is easy to do this mod?? PM me if you have the time, i have seen the tutorial.

There is another DIY somewhere about this, I saw it yesterday. On the R33 S1, cover the letters with masking tape, then spray the rest of the panel the colour of the car. Then insert LEDs behind each letter so that when it is turned on, the letters glow. You can then hook it up to either a switch, your lights, or your brake light. I was thinking about doing this, and was going to hook it up to my lights so that its on all the time during at night, and to the brakes so its on sometimes during the day. Let people know what your rolling in!!

MLT15E does them too, he actually has a thing going, I just do it for myself and friends :)

Though if you are in Syd, and can pick it up, you're friend enough :)

Anyway, should a thread like this, asking a bunch of questions, be in the fabrication section?

Not yet, but it is possible, but would require time, and some very precise cutting... If you can find one of the OEM ones, even if it is broken, I dare say I can work with that, the only thing I am worried about is the cutting really... though i could get that done proffesionally...

    • I don't know it is due to that. It could just be due to load on track being more than a dyno. But it would be nice to rule it out. We're talking a fraction of a second of pulling ~1 degree of timing. So it's not a lot, but I'd rather it be 0... Thicker oil isn't really a "bandaid" if it's oil that is going to run at 125C, is it? It will be thicker at 100 and thus at 125, where the 40 weight may not be as thick as one may like for that use. I already have a big pump that has been ported. They (They in this instance being the guy that built my heads) port them so they flow more at lower RPM but have a bypass spring that I believe is ~70psi. I have seen 70psi of oil pressure up top in the past, before I knew I had this leak. I have a 25 row oil cooler that takes up all the space in the driver side guard. It is interesting that GM themselves recommend 0-30 oil for their Vette applications. Unless you take it to the track where the official word is to put 20-50w oil in there, then take that back out after your track day is done and return to 0-30.
    • Nice, looks great. Nice work getting the factory parts also. Never know when you'll need them.
    • Thanks @jtha7 I will have a look around tomorrow but it is a prick of a spot. These are some photos i tried taking
    • I take it that the knock retard is from bearings tapping a little tune? Thicker oil is a fragile bandaid. You need a much bigger oil cooler and probably the bigger pump being discussed.
    • Hi @Chupapy i had several leaks from coolant pipes being corroded, i also had one leak on back of the head onto transmission. For me that leak was from the turbo water line. Follow the line to the back of the head The hose and metal pipe had perished these are the best pics I took of it at the time
