hey guys. just doing some research. which ppg gearbox would be the best to get? for a street/track gtr????

any personal experiances with them?

cheers.

How much power is in the GTR?

What the proportion of track/street? What tyres will you be using?

I've an OS synchro box and a ppg helical dogbox. The OS is ultra reliable if you have mechanical sympathy. The dogbox NEEDED & HAD regular maintenance. I've had my shares of failures with the dogboxes in my cars. I am currently using the OS in the GTR and will only put the dogbox back when my car is all sorted and I need to look for that extra 0.5 sec lol I missed too many track days with the dogbox

The best thing to do is try to go for a drive in one. Dogbox is not a cup of tea for everyone. Even if you've mastered the technique, it is still a pain to drive in peak traffic. It is awesome on the track or times when you don't value your license.

PS: NOTHING is indestructible in the GTR :) Don't think that because you pay 10k for a gearbox it will never break down.

yes very tru. its a difucult decision to make. what problems did you have with the ppg? and what bits needed replacing? did you have an ignition cut on the ecu for gearchanges? and did you use the clutch with it?

sory for all the questions. just want to get the rite one.

once this gearbox is in. it will be 70/30 track/street. thats what lary the laser is for

its going to be dog or synchro. not a combo. id probably get confused when racing going from 20ms shifts to a clutchless synchro shift and have the thing explode on me lol.

ive pretty much made my mind up on the 5 speed straight cut one. and i will utilise the flatshift function on my autronic to be nice to the box. also im in the process of designing a mega short shifter for the box as to speed up the changes. cos ive heard the quicker the better and less ware on the dogs.

how was the trust six speed to drive?

It was quite a dog to drive. You need to slam it in to get it to engage and would suit both your and my style of driving ;) Street driving was fun but I personally didn't mind it and put up with it. Although I only drove it for a few kms before it decided that 2nd had had enough. Further to that, my clutch isnt the easiest thing to drive so that is also a consideration.

hey to4gtr

i love our ppg dog box, we use a stright cut 5 speed box with the billet selector forks and bigger input shaft. i have very little sympathy for the way i change gears especially downshifting when using gears to help you pull up when i'm really late braking! if i had a synchro box in my car now it would last about five minutes before i would break a synchro. also we always use the clutch for up and downshifting with the ppg box.

that said they are very very noisy. and harsh on change when just chugging around. Also as others have stated they still need maintenance, mainly dog gears wearing which require replacing or back grinding to renew them, everything else is pretty bullet proof.

i generally have been getting the whole year out of the box, then rebuild. we have never broken a ppg gear or part (although we did twist the smaller input shaft, but we always new we were on the limit with that) . I have broken one of the standard nissan oem parts that get refitted to the gearbox when you buy a ppg set , when this broke it went down between the gears when i was doing about 180kph and smahed every gear in the box including both cases and the sandwich plate!! destroyed everything!

cheers russ ( p.s if you have a run around car & your car is going to be mainly track, i would recommend a ppg box. make sure it is built well and thoroughly checked over and use a good donor box)

Hey Guys still trying to get used to the box, just a qwuick question. When your just driving around normally(not on the track) do you find that you have to shift slowly and in 2 stages rather than just trying to smash it in like you would when flat out??

As it seems to be wearing in it is becoming a little harder to use around town.

Cheers guys talk soon

the boxes are great, pretty well what russ has said about them is spot on, as we both know from experience. Dog rings wear like a mofo, but as said they can be cleaned up to be used again before having to replace them. Full set of dog rings is about 1k.

I finally got over the mental block in my head about changing with the clutch on upshifts. Fark its great, change so fast with just a slight lift off the throttle. Pull the lever easily and it just slots into the next gear, so long as the revs are high enough. I found in the lower revs if your changing without the clutch, you need to rev match with a blip so it slots in or else it will crunch also. Obviously rev matching on downshifts is a necessity and used in conjuction with the clutch.

when we are just chugging around, i have found being really forceful with the change is best. If i just lazily put it into gear in most cases it will chatter on the dog gears and feel rather harsh. best to be acertive with it even at slow speeds.

cheers russ cya soon , congrats again mate on the pittsworth win!!

AWSOME. thats what i figured. yeah il be using the clutch, and using the flatshift function on my autronic. (ignition cut for 10-200 m/sec time apon depressing the clutch.)

is redline oil the go? or that expencive motul one?

    • Yeah, plenty of air flow, there is a dedicated path that feeds the air in to the OEM intake tube behind the bumper As for a "tangible effect", maybe, but getting the pod/intake air out of the hot engine bay is worth it psychologically to me, even if it gives no performance difference, so the tangible effect in my Lizard brain saysss yessss  In the end, to me a tangible effect isn't always about performance, sometimes it a sound or a look, or even a...... feeling  Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga
    • yeah first and reverse is where you will find clutch release issues (whether hydraulic or mechanical) because the difference in revs required is the highest there; particularly changing down from 2nd to 1st when still moving. To be clearer though, it is possible that the clutch release bearing is the wrong height. This is less likely than a hydraulic issue but it is not unheard of when you are mixing and matching

    • Hi all, Restoring r33 series 1 rb25det. All the heater hoses were on their way out, have replaced them and put it all back together. After testing I noticed a small leak from behind the head on the actual metal water line to the turbo when cars warm. I tried running a longer hose over it but it kept leaking...   I am about to take the (stock) manifold off again😔 to change the water line does any one have any lines they recommend? I was looking at Aeroflow Turbo Oil & Water Line Set but not sure what everyone else recommends. Car is completely stock but want to upgrade turbo eventually. it looks like ill have to disconnect a lot just to replace these lines so if there's anything else recommended to do please let me know. Thank you in advance!
    • From memory, on the R33 GTSt at least, while everyone says "It's not adjustable", I found when I changed clutches in mine, it just needed a small adjustment on the rod length. But be very wary here, as you could end up trying to push the pushrod in the master too far, or blowing out the slave.   Most likely though, if the master/slave isn't bypassing internally or leaking out, then the throw out is the wrong height compared to the fingers on the clutch, so when it moves to disengage the clutch, it isn't 100% disengaged. You can check part of this out too by jacking the car up, having the engine running, put your foot on the clutch and try to engage 1st gear. If it goes in pretty easy (Compared to the ground) and/or the wheels start turning a fair bit and it takes a bit too much brake pedal to bring them back to a stop, this is likely the issue.  I'm not sure if you can adjust the height of the forks etc in these though, it's been that long since I've touched any RB gearbox.
