I have an r32 gts-t which has lately given me headaches. To cut a long story short, an engine bearing is starting to spin which means death is not far away.

I've spent a lot of hard earned dollars on replacing many bits and pieces and believe that everything is running well except for this issue with the block.

My question is, what do you think is the logical thing to do? I can either sell my car at a giveaway price with all the supporting mods with close to 200rwkw, or replace the rb20 block and head and just transfer all the stuff across to it.

I love my car to bits, but it has been giving me a lot of headaches lately because of this engine. Having this issue lingering in the back of my mind puts me off driving the car when I really should be driving it...cos i enjoy driving it.

I'll admit that I don't have the skill to do a swap myself, but i have some friends who have done swaps on other cars (fwd) who are willing to help.

I want to believe that a swap is a good idea and selling it is a bad idea, but maybe some opinions will straighten out my thinking.

Please help provide some opinions, options and general costs for doing a swap...or not doing it and cutting my losses as it is.

Any constructive opinion is welcome. Thanks!

also, swapping to an rb25 is out of the question for me.

Main mods:

Spitfire coilpacks (new)

HKS 2530

Denso 550cc injectors

Link ECU

Bosch 040

2.5k and a mechanic and your problems will go away. Wrecker motor with 3 month warranty, new belts, pumps etc and all labour performed by someone else. I would expect that you wouldnt be up for much more then $2500, providing you can get a motor for less then $800

if you can do it with friends then even better, just be sure that its done properly

you sound like me when you say that it pisses you off to drive it, knowing there's a fault. i know how it feels!

if you end up selling it and getting another r32/rb20, you're probably going to miss the certain good things about your car.

do the swap. otherwise you have to start from scratch again.

at least if you trust or know the wrecker/seller, you'll have a good investment on a healthier engine, plus spare parts :)

agreed

And...speak to the ppl you actually plan on doing the work. you will only get personal opinions on this forum...noone hear will guarantee your money is being well spent or you are going the best option. :)

I dont know what i am talking about...if i did i would be earning a living from this. Im just a hillbilly who is too tight to spring for a real car so blabber on about RB20s. Its only one persons opinion but i at least try to substantiate it :) More views you get the better informed your decision will be >_<

A friend of mine had the conversion done to his,

There are plenty of room after the conversion too, good for a V-mount intercooler i reckon, also less weight too.

Any advantages?

They say the SR feels more responsive, and can produce just as more power as the RB20?

Dont know about responsive but all i can see is,

Less weight

SR produce up to 240kw@wheels with stock internal

More parts for SR than RB20 these days.

thanks for the opinions guys.

like the rb25, i probably wouldn't go down the SR20 route. i just want to keep it plain and simple with as little hassles as possible.

are there any workshops that would be recommended to do the work (well) at a reasonable price?

i'll have to give them a call or drop in to talk to them about it first. not fond of being screwed around with anymore car stuff by mechanics.

True true!

240rwkw can be done on RB20 too, thing is though RB20 parts aren't as common as SR20, like you said.

I like the SR20, but prefer the RB20.. Everyones different though.

Offcourse RB is the shit but only from RB25 onward.

Starionturbo (a vic sau member) had an RB25 in his 32gtst a while ago, let me tell you it goes HARD. Only suggested SR because it would be different that's all.

Don't forget the only person that can steer an RB20 FAST and beyon it capability is TROY but no one else :P ! J/K.

just curious why you wouldnt go the rb25 route? there wouldnt be much of a difference of a swapova. stuff is just a bit bigger. i only know rb26 so dont take my word on anything else. just curious

Have you driven an FD RX7?

You'll feel the weight different between the FD and your GTR straight the way.

Hahah its true but, Roy gets mad results lol

I can see Roy lurking around in this therad, your about to get a good answer to why RB20 is the shit! :(

How hard is it to put RB25 in? I got wolf and that so ECU side wouldn't be that hard, just the loom/wiring is the most difficult.

Djemz I think is his forum name, he has an RB25 in his R32. Runs a HKS2535 and E-MANAGE, makes a reliable 240rwkw..

I've talked to him and other people who have been in the car.. Staight out machine.

LOL...i take insults far better then complements. Snowie?

But point is, i only rate myself as a fair driver. The fact that the car does what it does isnt me, its the fact that a GTSt even with a lowly RB20 can still be a pretty good thing.

one problem you WILL come across at some stage when fitting a 25 is the increase in capacity vs. the vicroad guidelines for motor vehicles. Don't go this route if you don't want troubles with the local constable, unless you plan on getting it fully engineered.

For an easy replacement, I would suggest going down the path of a good condition secondhand motor. Cheapest, easiest option there for sure.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
