hmmm 800 degrees being shot out of a pipe hanging halfway down the back of the engine bay..

nothing can happen surely.

I mean, these engines are only 12-17years old.

they woldn't have any oil leaks or anything.

especially not from the back of the rocker covers..

naaah..

no way.

and surely there aren't any heater hoses or any electrical wiring anywhere near the back lower area of an engine bay these days...

I am seriously dissapointed at how much stupid information is given in these forums sometimes.

yes it's a public forum to pass your opinion on a subject but for f**ks sake..

the subject is a screamer on a stock turbo and people are saying it will bring boost on faster than a 3inch turbo back exhaust.

it will hold boost better.

it won't leak on idle.

it'll make more power.

you people need to get your arse dynos re-calibrated..

don't give out advice unless you have first hand experience or cold hard facts from proper testing.

sure give your opinion on the matter like "screamer pipe is sick bro" "you gotta have one to be in the in crowd bro".. etc..

but don't give out bullshit advise.

Mate no ones giving out shit advice. They are merely discussing about screamers, thats what you do on forums isnt it? To ask questions and learn things? Whether you take it as gospel or not thats your problem.

Clearly u dont like screamers so click the back button and butt the f**k out of the thread 'bro'.

2rismo - nice work.

on a more important topic.. I didn't you popped your engine.

I didn't know you changed your turbo to be able to run the type of boost to blow your engine..

what's being built for it?

GT35 @ 29psi plus 100hp shot of the good stuff was all it took :)

Check the "Birth of an RB25" thread in the Drag Section.

GTST, what have you got against screamer pipes? your main points seem to be about it being a fire hazard, (and not internal gate specific) so is every car with an external gate a fire hazard also?

I'm not against screamer pipes.

I'm against screamer pipes on stock turbo's.

they sound like shit.

it sounds like a hole in the exhaust.

or a massive exhaust leak.

A large turbo with an external gate does sound tough.

but the fact that it's illegal and STINKS out anything it drives past with toxic f*king gasses is shitty.

It annoys me when it's used on the street with regular driving because of the noise and smell.

there is a reason for a Cat converter and the fact that it is being bypassed causes massive toxic gases..

When you go to a circuit or drags, and you hear a skyline with the boot fair up it with a large turbo and external gate with screamer wide open definitely sounds good.

i get the shits with all this on the streets.

when your not out there looking to watch racing or race yourself.

when you are a regular citizen and some knob head screams past with their exhaust leak and you are left sitting there in the fumes.

THAT is why I don't like them

Not that any of that matters.

any fool that has a stock turbo with a screamer pipe that says it sounds good or similar to an external gated turbo should get their hand off it.

you do realise different flages on different screamers will produce a completely different sound.

i agree with u that screamers on a stock turbo might be a lil gay, but ive heard some and they defiently sound beasty.

some lame yes.......but others sound like busy horn.

how many skylines have you seen with internal gates/screamers GTST?

i've heard internal gates with screamer pipes that do not leak, at all, i've actually yet to hear one that does leak

theres no sh*t fumes i've ever noticed, although it is possible, there cant be much of it, i've been in all different positions in/around the car with the gate open, if there was a bad smell i would have surely noticed it.

and when open, i think it does genuinely sound like an external gate

there are genuine reasons for having one also, it would help with better boost control (when pushing the stock turbo). power is negotiable as there havent really been any back to back tests, but if its dumping gas out the screamer, thats less going through the dump/exhuast. less gas=less back pressure= more power. and in the cases that i've seen it sounds tough (the most important part :) )

it makes perfect logical sense dosnt it? and nismoid is saying if a exhaust is made perfectly(yet to see one) it shouldnt be any diff.

i dont understand how atmo venting compared to pipe venting could be anywhere near the same.

but i guess we'll have to wait for actual tests

Edited by R34NRG
Technically isnt a blow off the 10K fine too? Since it vents into atmo hence by passing the cat, sure its not alot but still does it

bov vents clean air that has been sucked in..

well it's not clean as it's got some fumes due to going through the pipework where there is most likely oil..

but the wastegate is gasses after it has been mixed with fuel and burnt.

VB - stock turbo wastegate works different to an aftermarket external gate.

Lets say on a series 2 GTST

pretty new 96 model seems to be common.

that is now 11 years old.

about 100,000kms.

OBVIOUSLY not going to be as tight as the day it left the factory.

especially not a spring that has opened and closed over and over for a million times.

heated and cooled just as many times..

runs a 7psi from factory.

at idle, yes it's shut.

lets say you are cruising along on 2nd gear at about 2700rpm, down (insert typical hangout street here), slowing down traffic while you build up a bit of space between you and the car in front.

You see some chicks so you floor it.

before your boost gauge swings around to 7psi, the waste gate has already started to open at around probably 1-2 psi to bring the boost on smoothly... so it doesn't come on real hard and end in stupid wheel spin.

it's how the factory boost controller is designed.

not to mention the 5psi spring in the factory wastegate actuator.

if you add a boost controller to increase to 10psi because you want to start your own missfire at 4500rpm thread, the gate will start to open a little later.. say around 4-5psi and be fully open by 10psi.

ANY 3inch exhaust (mandrel bend or press bent) will outflow what a stock skyline turbo can push out.

any aftermarket 3 inch dump and front pipe will outflow what the stock skyline turbo can push out.

Even those cheap 1 piece bell mouth dump/front pipe combos.

by the time you get to aftermarket turbos big enough to require an external gate, you would have already got some sort of management, injectors, afm, manifold etc etc.

external gates (plumbed back or screamer pipe attached) are adjustable.

you can adjust the spring tension.

you can swap the spring for a stiffer/softer spring.

MOST have more than one vacuum/boost source to control the openning and shutting of the gate.

the flap is larger in diameter also.

all this is obvious isn't it?

stock turbo wastegate port is tiny.

it's like having a 1 inch exhaust with no muflers.

being on a stock turbo, full boost of 7psi will be reached by like 2500rpm (or there abouts).

at these revs, a skyline exhaust note isn't even at it's tastiest.

and now there is this high pitched screech at those revs because it's already fully open to control the boost.

AND, it had started to make a slight screeching sound a little before (this is the leak I mean) because it has had to start opening to bring the boost on smoothly as designed.

I don't think I can make it any clearer why "I" think stock internal gated turbos with screamer pipes sound like shit.

if you add a boost controller to increase to 10psi because you want to start your own missfire at 4500rpm thread, the gate will start to open a little later.. say around 4-5psi and be fully open by 10psi.

ROFL - I love those Threads...............NNNNNNNOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTT

it has been proven that split dump pipes that merge back in later on make more power than bellmouths (have yet to see results for screamer but dare say it would be similar/better). what a pipe can flow is one thing, how much power you can make through it is another, although they are very closely related. its alright to say a 3" pipe will flow X amount of cfm, but throw in turbulance as found at the rear of the turbo, and it all goes to the crapper, although i do understand where your coming from with how much the exhaust will flow compared to whats coming out of the motor, i cant see that a cheap bellmouth is as good as a split dump/screamer

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
