Well when i first got my turbo everything seemed to be good, till a week or so later i realised that i was losing oil consistently. i'd lose around 1L of oil per week, depending on how i drove.

so i looked into having the turbo repaired by aaron. he took it, he said he fixed it then he sent it back.... GREAT, i thought. now my turbo is 100%.....a week later i still had 1L of oil gone. not good.

i was speaking to aaron on msn and he was convinced that it was my motor and not the turbo. he said it could be my valve stem seals. so i did them. no change. then he said send it to GCG to see whats wrong with it.

ive been putting it off for a while because of how busy i am and i couldnt have my car off the road for more than a week at the most.

after hearing that a friend of mine had his sliding turbo fail, the oil problem really started to worry me, so i pulled it off and sent it to GCG under aaron's instructions, as he told my friend to do also.

GCG say that it will cost $990 to repair. aaron is now telling me to get the turbo off GCG and send it to whoever is warranting it.

mind you, it was sent to them before and they did not repair it then.

GCG said:

- ring area worn

- collars are worn

- bearing housing needs to be machined to fit a new bearing in there.

- the turbo was showing that it had 50,000km's of wear on it, when ive had the turbo since february with a few months off while sending the turbo off to get 'repaired'.

on the plus side, GCG also said:

- the shaft had NO sign of oil contamination, no scoring on the shaft (which aaron had said that there was when i first sent him the turbo).

- and there was no indication of lack of oil pressure on the motor.

now, what do i do? should i send the turbo back to aaron's warranting company for a second time and wonder what will happen next?

- i dont want to do this, i've been through enough over this turbo, i think i deserve a working turbo after all of this.

- aaron told me to send it to GCG, which i did.

or should i push to have GCG repair the turbo properly?

And the turbo would be repaired under warranty by Murnane Motors.

if i had a Murnane Motors turbo, i'd do exactly that.

i have a sliding performance turbo, so sliding performance should take care of everything since i dont know them, nor have i ever dealt with them.

if it were me I would send it there, get it fixed then sell it (disclosing the history of course). I mean, you did chose a turbo based on price (well I assume anyway). sadly it hasn't lived up to expectation. try a GCG or HKS etc. I mean sure they cost more, but if you fit it once, and never have to remove it again then overall it's much cheaper. :w00t: I would probably be not too comfortable with re-fitting it know this could happen again.

Aaron used to be at the shop working on the turbo's with Sheldon the owner purely to try and keep up with orders.

Sliding Performance does not own the balancers or machining gear, Aaron was basically just the robot and on lots of occasions so were i just to help keep up with the mass of turbo's that were always required.

The first time the turbo was seen to there was no problem with seals or anything that i can see in the notes i have.

Just that there was discoloration from what apparently looked like minor oil starvation.

well if GCG rebuild it i will have a working turbo because they've figured out the problem. i wouldnt have a problem installing it after that.

if his warranter repairs it then i'll be alot more reluctant, and i wouldnt want to sell a dodgy product to anybody.

it was said that the turbos were built in-house.

ok, well it sounds like joe know what he wants. I think from here on it's between joe and sliding. you may be able to get a compromise joe where by they are willing to foot some of the bill for the repair. but either way it's not really suitable for the public forum, probably best to discuss it in private. :w00t:

I would send it back for the warranty work. Sliding is obviously telling you to send it back to the manufacturer to save you some time.

If you are concerned about their workmanship take it back to GCG turbos and get them to check it before you put it back on your car.

If it is still no good when it comes back you would have a good case to get a refund I would think.

so you agree that if i got it back after a repair and it was still faulty, i should be up for a refund?

well, this is the 2nd time its been repaired. first time, he told me there was a bit of scoring on the shaft.

GCG tell me that the shaft was 100% perfect. not a single sign of wear or oil contamination or oil starvation.

so i've got 1 person saying im due a FULL refund.

Well the turbo is still under warranty, and Slide has offered for Murnane Motors who appears to have built the turbo(correct me if I'm wrong) to fix it.

Now you have information from GCG of what is wrong with the turbo, can't you give this information to Murnane Motors when you send the turbo there to be repaired so they know what to fix? When it is repaired there should be some sort of extended warranty on the turbo since it is a fresh rebuild.

If for some reason the turbo is still not up to scratch or fails even after they repair it, I'd say your entitled to ask for a refund on the turbo under warranty.

It may not be the quickest solution, but it is the most ethical.

Give Sliding Performance another to chance to fix things. Non of us are perfect, and mistakes have been made, and the last thing Slide wants is an unhappy customer and a bad reputation for his business, and he will do what is in his power to fix things.

Spend a little more to begin with... do it right the first time imo.

not all of us have the $ to go out and buy the bigger named brands, im still working my way through uni.

im not dissing SP at all, i just think for all my efforts im due a working turbo repaired by an establishment who have proven themselves.

thats actually a good idea.

problem is, Slide doesnt want me to send the turbo to him at all. he doesnt want anything to do with it as far as i can tell. he's trying to shift responsibility.

i dont want to send my turbo to his warranting company because ive never dealt with them, or even knew about them to begin with, so how can i trust them?

if slide pays for the GCG quote of $75, pays for postage (not sure what it will cost), ill send it to HIM for him to take care of.

Get the warranty repair. The worst thing that can happen is you are in the same position you are in now (which i seriously doubt), the best solution is that you get a turbo that works perfectly.

If you dont take full advantage of the warranty what is the point of having one?

    • Hey y'all! I'm curious about how y'all go about widebodying your cars. I noticed that when running a square setup, my front wheels are a bit more tucked in than my rear wheels. Not by much, maybe 5-10mm. This leads me to wonder - when I widebody, should I use narrower front flares and wider rear flares? I found a set of 40mm rear flares that I really like, and was thinking of pairing them with some 18mm front flares, but I don't want the car to look strange. How have others done this? Note, I'm in a sedan. Thanks!
    • And if it was anything other than an auto tranny part, it might be a problem. But seeing as all auto trannies belong in the recycling bin, it's fine.
    • I have an R32 Fenix rad. It is good.
    • All the schemas I can see, indicate your typical setup of ATF 'cooler' (read: heat exchanger) in the bottom radiator tank..ie; https://nissan.epc-data.com/stagea/wgnc34/5413-rb25det/engine/214/ ...but I can prattle on a bit here. These trannies have a thermistor in the sump ~ the TCU reads this and 1. bumps the line pressure up when the ATF is 'cold' and 2. prevents the TC lockup clutch from operating, until the ATF comes up to minimum operating temp (keeps the ATF 'churning' through the TC so it heats up quicker) -- trigger point is around 55C. In these conditions, the engine coolant temperature rises faster than the ATF temperature, and also helps heat the ATF up, which is why it's best to think of the in radiator tank setup as a heat exchanger ; the heat can flow in both directions... ...with these trannies, the 'hot' ATF comes out the front banjo bolt, flows through the cooler/heat exchanger, and returns to the box  via the rear banjo bolt. This gets a mention, due to the wildly different opinions wrt running auto trans fluid coolers ~ do you bypass the in radiator tank altogether, or put the cooler inline with the in radiator tank system...and then, do you put the additional cooler before of after the in radiator tank system?... ....fact is the nominal engine operating temp (roughly 75C), happens to be the ideal temperature for the ATF used in these trannies as well (no surprises there), so for the in radiator tank system to actually 'cool' the ATF, the ATF temp has to be hotter than that...lets say 100C -- you've got 25C of 'excess' heat, (slowly) pumping into the 75C coolant. This part of the equation changes drastically, when you've got 100C ATF flowing through an air cooled radiator ; you can move a lot more excess heat, faster ~ it is possible to cool the ATF 'too much' as it were...(climate matters a lot)... ...in an 'ideal' setup, what you're really trying to control here, is flash heating of the ATF, primarily produced by the TC interface. In a perfect world, wrt auto trans oil cooling, you want a dedicated trans cooler with builtin thermostatic valving - they exist. These should be run inline and before the in radiator tank system ~ when 'cold' the valving bypasses the fin stack, allowing the ATF to flow direct to the in radiator tank heat exchanger, so it works 'as intended' with helping heat the ATF up. When 'hot' (iirc it was 50C threshold), the valving shuts forcing the ATF through the cooler fin stack, and onto the in radiator tank heat exchanger...and you sort of think of it as a 'thermal conditioner' of sorts...ie; if you did cool your ATF down to 65C, the coolant will add a little heat, otherwise it works as intended... ...the 'hot' ATF coming from the front bango bolt, is instantiated from the TC when in use, so all/any flash heated oil, flows to the fluid-to-air cooler first, and because of the greater heat differential, you can get rid of this heat fast. Just how big (BTU/h) this cooler needs to be to effectively dissipate this TC flash heat, is the charm...too many variables to discuss here, but I just wanted to point out the nitty-gritty of automatic trans fluid coolers ~ they're a different beastie to what most ppl think of when considering an 'oil cooler'... /3.5cents   
    • Been a busy but productive day. Axle and hubs acquired. All fitted up after a bit of modifying. Need to sort out wider mudguards and running light reflector covers but other than that the trailer is gooood to go !!
