Hi

As promised here's an update on my blown turbo. It finally started to blow oil as I neared home after being out of town. Fortunately I got back in one piece.

Thje oil feed line had failed near a join but I'm not sure if this is the root cause of the turbo problem or not. The turbo was well stuffeed and is now being re-built.

Will update when I get it back. I'm considering a freeflow exhaust and wonder if this is recommended by people here. I'd kinda like a more throaty growl and improved performance that this may yield.

despite the mechanic's belief that the turbo could be removed, engine in situ, a stubborn bolt on the turbo heat shield proved this theory's undoing

Whoa.... damn that's a lot of work because of one bolt... damn. Checkout the size of the cat (assuming that's what it is?)!! Didn't know you could drop the whole front suspension and engine in one go like that, that's cool.

hahahaha surely he could have cut the bolt with heat, a drill or a grinder.

with the turbo, definately get it highflowed !!!!

you'll be after a 3" exhaust from the turbo back, free flowing.

but remember once done your boost will raise a little, check the afr's on a dyno.

install a bleed valve, a panel hiflo air filter, and get that little 'tune' done

a safc might be very well worth while as well.

good luck with it all champ, end of the day it all comes down to budget.

but fact is you can do a hell of a lot of mods on a cheap $$

Ouch, that looks to be a hell of a lot of work, even if you do say it's just six bolts to get the engine dropped.

That exhaust looks really restrictive, and is that a muffler in the middle or a ridiculously large cat-converter?

I'm pretty sure most of our cars would have a gearbox assembly around that long, Dale - the transfer case adds what looks like a huge length to the box.

yeah its dead easy to drop the whole subframe on all skyline chasis, but I'm pretty sure its 12 bolts not 6 :) and of course you need a hoist - we did it once without (used the engine hoist to lift the whole car off the motor) but it was a real pain.

and yes the motor/gearbox/xfer case look about the same size as the 32-34 as well

usually the easiest option for awd cars... will be fun when mine needs the timing belt done :)

i was hoping there was more than 6 bolts too, seeing as the top hats and upper control arms had 6 between them :P

Yeah I was also going to call bullshit on only 6 bolts as the first thing I counted was the strut tops there are 6 there alone. I know its not difficult to drop the whole front subframe but still nuts to that to just get a turbo off. I mean its one bolt on a heat shield...and people winge about Z32 300ZX's being tight.

6 bolts on the engine and 4 on the trans and it's out

so today I get the call to advise that the turbo has been reinstalled and tested and they discover that something or other is not right and it has to come out again and be sent back to the dozy pricks who overhauled the unit

the car has been inoperative since two week before I posted this thread

    • I saw you mention this earlier and it raised a red flag, but I couldn't believe it was real. Yes, the vacuum signal should vary. It is the one and only load signal from the engine to the ECU, and it MUST vary. It is either not connected or is badly f**ked up in some way.
    • @Haggerty you still haven't answered my question.  Many things you are saying do not make sense for someone who can tune, yet I would not expect someone who cannot tune to be playing with the things in the ECU that you are.  This process would be a lot quicker to figure out if we can remove user error from the equation. 
    • If as it's stalling, the fuel pressure rises, it's saying there's less vacuum in the intake manifold. This is pretty typical of an engine that is slowing down.   While typically is agree it sounds fuel related, it really sounds fuel/air mixture related. Since the whole system has been refurbished, including injectors, pump, etc, it's likely we've altered how well the system is delivering fuel. If someone before you has messed with the IACV because it needed fiddling with as the fuel system was dieing out, we need to readjust it back. Getting things back to factory spec everywhere, is what's going to help the entire system. So if it idles at 400rpm with no IACV, that needs raising. Getting factory air flow back to normal will help us get everything back in spec, and likely help chase down any other issues. Back on IACV, if the base idle (no IACV plugged in) is too far out, it's a lot harder for the ECU to control idle. The IACV duty cycle causes non linear variations in reality. When I've tuned the idle valves in the past, you need to keep it in a relatively narrow window on aftermarket ecus to stop them doing wild dances. It also means if your base idle is too low, the valve needs to open too much, and then the smallest % change ends up being a huge variation.
    • I guess one thing that might be wrong is the manifold pressure.  It is a constant -5.9 and never moves even under 100% throttle and load.  I would expect it to atleast go to 0 correct?  It's doing this with the OEM MAP as well as the ECU vacuum sensor. When trying to tune the base map under load the crosshairs only climb vertically with RPM, but always in the -5.9 column.
    • AHHHH gotchaa, I'll do that once I am home again. I tried doing the harness with the multimeter but it seems the car needed a jump, there was no power when it was in the "ON" position. Not sure if I should use car battery jump starter or if its because the stuff that has been disconnect the car just does send power.
