the regs are about to change for production cars in aus. brakes are now "free" as long as the disc is the same size and the caliper has the same number of pistons as stock

so i will be putting them on the gtr.

I'm just hoping i can get something a bit cheaper than a custom harrop setup or similar, but I desperately needed to do something about the standard brakes, the brembos are just not up to the job.

Hi Duncan

only vaguely sensible $ option i know of for the 2 piece discs is DBA 5000s made for the R33 GTR. i think stoptech do some that are not as $ savage as Brembo, AP etc and seem to be quite good.

biggest 4 pot is the Brembo F50, you can pick these up 2nd hand on ebay etc as they come off GT-P Falcons (F) but obviously you'll need adapters made. i think the smallest rec F50 disc size is 330 mm but some pad shaping should sort that.

F40 uses same pads but smaller pistons and i think they are a smaller caliper but take the same adapter brackets, not sure where you can get F40s locally / easily though.

alternatively try the jap auctions through Slidewize, Yen is mid 90s to the dollar so 100:1 is a good rule of thumb plus overheads to get it here;

http://page18.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w15971174 looks to be caliper adapters for F50/40 with 322mm discs. if this is what you need and you got it at a good price it'd be a cheap way of getting some brackets, and you could even consider having the discs binned over there to save on freight if it was economical to do so.

that's all i know of that suits, not sure you'll see much improvement over the Brembos. how do you feel they're inadequate?

cheers

You know what I am going to say.................

Increase the corner speed and you won't have to brake as hard :laughing-smiley-014: :laughing-smiley-014:

Cheers

Gary

So increase corner speed, which now means you have a higher exit corner speed, and are now approaching the next corner with even more speed!?!

here's an example of the F50 Ford calipers on ebay. i'm interested in the rears if you want to share the cost.

yep, get some decent (endless, project mu, biot, brembo) 2 piece rotors (324mm X 30 or 32mm) and run some F50 calipers. not too expensive and should be pretty good. and nice common pad shape/size too.

So increase corner speed, which now means you have a higher exit corner speed, and are now approaching the next corner with even more speed!?!

That's what I was thinking. Unless you go even faster round the next corner again

lol thanks Gary. Don't think I can get through corners any quicker with the current setup, so I really need someone who knows good shocks and springs to help out.

the brembos are fading within say 4 laps of oran park, so the changes to the rules are timely for me

We have a set of brakes about the same size as the f40 brembos already (from a porsche cup car, pre 6 spot calipers) that fit 324x30 discs including the adapters, I might give them a go and see if they sort our problems. We have dba 5000 slotted to suit.

Thanks for the options guys.

Duncan, the big question is what is the budget? :O There are some nice calipers that will work with 36mm thick rotors...though they are not cheap. F40s are physically the same as F50s. F50s are really too big to be using on a 324mm rotor...better with something a little smaller.

Pm me your email and i will send you over some places to try

yeah...less than 4 piston can upgrade to 4. 4 or higher has to have the same number of pistons. Very good news for the commodore.

Mark, yeah they were the calipers off Mark's black car (later yellow and purple wreck), might just start with them since we have them. I'm not really just blaming the rotors but I need to go up in size as much as I can overall - these new rules let me run a better rotor (same size) and a bigger caliper so I will go as bigger.

If the porker brembos dont work I'll splash out on some f40s next year.

Gary, I'm surprised the other car didn't have fade problems, they mustered up a fair bit more power than I can.

Hi Duncan, if you've got Brembos you're running 324mm anyway. I reckon the Porker calipers will work well, interested to see how they rate next to the Brembos.

Cheers

    • Yes I can see how that would put you off HFM, especially with the price of good quality brake fluid. From what I understand it as you say the BM50 is the standard BMC for a R32 GTR, I must admit I would like to go far a Genuine Nissan BM57, but lack of cash prevents that at present. With the price being so close between the genuine BM50 and BM57 a BM57 New it seems a better choice as you gain that 1/16 bore size with the BM57, I would be interested in how much difference you feel with the BM57 fitted. I am going to take SteveL's advice in the short term and see how much actually comes out of that proportioning valve vent and save up for the Genuine Nissan part. Thanks for clarifying the HFM failure
    • Thanks mate. I just got the post inspection 1/2 done from state roads when the starter motor packed up, either that or the car alarm system is having trouble.  OEM part number 23300-AA112.
    • Hi, I though I was coming to an end in finding a replacement starter motor for a rb25de neo. I came across a starter motor from Taarks and a message below stating: Direct fit. 11 Tooth count. All below part numbers have been superseded to 11 teeth. Can some body shed some light on going from 8 teeth to 11 teeth apart from 36-month / 25,000 km warranty for passenger vehicles to 12 Month Warranty. Compatible with the following Nissan part numbers: 23300-20P00 23300-20P01 23300-20P05 23300-20P10 23300-20P11 23300-AA111 23300-AA112 23300-AA300 23300-08U10 23300-08U11 23300-08U15
    • Low battery? Maybe check capacity? I know first-hand, on BMWs if your battery drops below 80% capacity, it starts causing strange issues.
    • 8.5 +37 = should fit rear, but I think it'll hit on front. What you want is low 30s/high 20's front, mid 30's rear. That 17" screenshot you posted looks good, I'd run it on my R32 (but that's long dead now). For tyre sizes, my rule of thumb is: 8': 235, 9": 255. But that's just my opinion. Nismo sizes: 18x8.5+35/18x9.5+38 is a good starting point.
