Hey all,

I'm looking around for a dump+front pipe setup for an RB25 with stock turbo. I'm told a split dump will be better than bell-mouth as well.

From what i know there isn't much point going all out nuts on a stockie turbo, but i don't want to regret a cheapo purchase (i.e. JJR stainless) when something a little dearer is the better option (such as CES), i.e. adding an extra $100-200 and getting stainless, or ceramic coating.

I have a mild steel Fujitsubo cat-back at the moment with no plans for turbo upgrade for a while.

Any suggestions for a reliable, reasonably priced setup with the aim for a pansy 200rwkw?

Thanks :teehee:

Omar,

I just have the single 3 inch dump/front pipe in one.

Works well for me with my hi-flow turbo set up etc.

Before my hi-flow set up I was making just under 200rwkw with it.

However if you are planning further mods later (turbo upgrade) I'd now suggest a hi-flow cat also. I have standard cat with my set up and it is robbing me of some more grunt!!d'oh!

Also - I havent had the split pipe on before or done any testing so cannot compare !

I think Liz had both on her old 33 - hope she see's this thread :teehee:

Cheers,

Chris

I'd get one. Just unsure if there's better options.

Do you recommend JJR?

 I was hoping maybe you could shed some light into the matter as i was looking at one myself haha, but if you had a good reason not to go there id keep hunting!

I guess it depends on what you want to spend! I mean the HKS front pipe alone is around $400, and with that you still have the stock dump pipe..

For the price personally it looks pretty dam good! Especially as its a split dump pipe, and front pipe in one. And will directly bolt up to OEM turbo and cat/decat.

Ill just go ahead and get it and let you know. :teehee:

Get one of these babies from AM Performance in SA, im sure he can send interstate, they do Split pipes in screamer style or return to exhaust which would be best for street. Quality is top notch and they wont leak between the turbine and the gate!

just adding to this thread, would it be beneficial to include having a small flex pipe in the dump/front pipe? gktech sell ones with flex pipes like this:

R33 front pipe with flex

ive also been looking at the JJR dumps but without a flex piece in the piping, just wondering if there is benefits with having the flex piece there?

Batmbl sell good ones Omar, Just japs are also fine.. Just as long as its not an xforce one you'll be fine.

Mines a custom ceramic coated one which is why It sounds so deep, so Id suggest it being ceramic coated, if you can find a second hand Ces one that would be good but unessasary as they are designed for some decent power.

The belmouth actually will flow more with bigger turbo applications, but the split dump makes the car sound better with a stock turbo.

If your like me with no need to upgrade the turbo then I think any will be fine if you ceramic coat them or heat wrap them.

A high flow cat is a obvious need too. I have the Catco one from Batmbl and it flows great, alot better than the stock one.. again dont get a xforce jobby.

They dont fit correctly, often never line up with themselves or other brands.

The cats dont flow at recommended amount, dont feel right.

Exhausts often stick out conciderable amounts from the rear bar of the car. but sound good.

So just a few points

I havent had anyproblems with mine. car makes 203rwkw with pfc on standard turbo so no flow issues either. Only thing i can say is it is quite loud. Might be bcos mine has a hotdog resonator instead of a proper mid oval style muffler. sounds great though.

Are you saying i should ceramic coat a stainless one too? Or is that just mild steel?

If you want to.. Mines stainless and ceramic coated.. looks slightly funny like a weird polished silver but you'll never see it.. Just drops temps in the engine bay.

The xforce cats are really bad at flow.. but thats a nice power figure.

So Nat you're saying i.e. buy a JJR and get it ceramic coated?

Sounds like a decent idea actually.

Yeah cat is on the list too. Hoping RSPCA can get me a cheap one.

I checked BATMBL on SAU and saw their split dump+front pipe. Looks pretty good, but you said yours is custom? What did they do differently, the coating you mean? I'm happy to add $100 over JJR and get the BATMBL one, sounds better quality steel (plus you recommend).

So the Catco was good for you? I'm not gonna go nuts on a cat (i.e. i'm not fussed if its ceramic/metal) cause i'm not gonna upgrade the turbo for a while, if ever (he says with a hint of doubt lol)

Are you anal like some of the other SAUers and insist on a metal pussy?

Convince me and after my exhaust manifold is fixed (next week) i'll head straight for the turbo-back :D

Good to have some advice drawn from experience ;)

On the dyno my CES dump actually brought boost on quicker and made more top-end than the bellmouth....they both tragically had boost drop-off, but hey that was related to a sucky-closed intake pipe :S

So you'd recommend a CES dump+front??

Yeh i was thinking it wouldn't make a big difference. I'm gonna stick with a split dump. Just wanna pick a good all rounder.

Hey, i just ordered my JJR one in stainless, when it arrives.. (maybe a week) ill let you know how it goes.

Thanks mate, i'm interested. If it's a great bit of kit then its a steal. I need convincing cheaper=better :)

    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.
    • Nah - but you won't find anything on dismantling the seats in any such thing anyway.
    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
