What do you guys think is going on with my bike engine? Basically it's a two cylinder engine and each cylinder has it's own carby.

And here is the underside of the head. Does this mean cylinder 2 is running lean?

These are my camshafts. Anyone care to comment?

These are my bores. You can still clearly see the hones marks but I measured the bores by eye and they are 89.5mm x 89.1mm at the top of the bore and 89.5mm x 89.4mm at the bottom. Ok I used a Vernier Caliper as I didn't have a bore scope thingy.

I was hoping to get away with new rings, bearings and gaskets. What do you all think? The pics there show that the piston skirts are wearing the bores.

I haven't got the bearings out yet so don't know their condition.

to me it looks like filings of some sort, possibly aluminium has broken and found its way in the oil & on the top of the piston?

in the oil are there any filings or chunks of anything ? cos if there are small filings of anything going through the cam while its spinning it can mark it like that or it could be a oil supply issue but the bits of metal on the top of that piston does not look good.

Sorry that's not the bit I was asking about. That's just crap from a bolt I had to grind off cos someone before me had completely rounded it.

What I'm curious about is the condition of those two different coloured valves and also the condition of the bores.

give it a fresh hone, fit new rings into bores without pistons and meaure the ring gap. do this in three spots (top, middle and bottom) and check to see if it is within spec. As for the valves i would check to see if they are sealing correctley (drop thinners down that port and see if it leaks past valves... bit dodge but it works) and then check the spark plug colors, if the second cyl has a light plug too it could be the mixtures... bikes are easy to tune what carbs are on it? check to make sure both needlles are on the same "clip" if they are and cyl 2 is still lean lift the needle up a clip on cylinder 2 and recheck plug.

i would get heads cleaned and checked anyway while they are off for safety sake myself.

Being a carb'd engine, I'm presuming it is the TRX850 or an earlier TDM900? Good fun machines both, in the right environment.

The wear on those cam journals is a bit of an issue I think. What condition are the mains and big ends in?

What sort of mileage and service schedule on the engine? And what was the reason for the pull-down? The different colour of exhaust valve deposits indicates a difference in mixtures (to my eyes anyway).

It might be worth checking to see if Yamaha plated the bores with Nicasil in those things too.

Well spotted. It's a TDM850. You know what's funny is that now that it has dried off a bit, the exhaust valves from each cylinder no longer look quite so different from each other. The erstwhile lighter one have no deposits on them though and the others do, it's just that those ones have lightened up a little.

Haven't got to the bottom end yet but that's what I think it's problem was. Rattley big end or main bearing.

How much fun is pulling stuff apart. Ha Ha

I hope you have marked every thing?

Make sure that you plasta gauge all bearing clearances when you put her together so that you don't build in the same problem. And measure your piston ring to piston gap with some feeler gauges just to make sure that you don't need to replace the pistons as well. I would just linish all your bearing running surfaces give her a hone and replace all your bearings, gaskets and either pistons or pistons and rings.

Check the cam chain tensioner cause they can make a hell of a noise when they are about to shit them self’s, if it is cheap i would replace it.

Get the carbies balanced and checked by a motorbike mechanic cause they can be a pain in the arse to get right on older well worn bikes.

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA
