oh man. i'm not angry. that'd be cyber-weird. i just dont want to pollute this thread with crap....and you might've noticed, i dont like excessive negativity for the sake of demeaning ppl, or their opinions.

If you ask me, just look at ur FMIC as a supporting mod and it'll all seem worthwhile. I lost a lil throttle response with mine, but at least you don't have to worry about the intercooler hampering performance for future mods.

The 2 reasons i wanted mine were 1) for when i upgrade the turbo and 2) because fmic's look pimp

I dont mean to butt in on this topic, but ive been thinkin bout upgrading to a FMIC on my 34. From everything ive read on this forum from most people its really only worth doing if im looking at upgrading my turbo....which im not doing anytime soon...

I only plan on running 10psi and have just added a 3" turbo back exhaust so is a FMIC really worth the money?

Jase-R34 - have a search for R34+SMIC on the forums

you will find peoples results on what power they have while still using the stock cooler etc.

as this thread will show you, the final decision is up to you.

I'm guessing that with 10 psi and stock ecu and normal intake and exhaust mods on your R34 GTT, it will be making around 165 - 180rwkw.

if you are looking for opinions, mine is that you do NOT need to upgrade that intercooler.

Thanks for that GTST, I think i might save some money and not do the FMIC until i eventually do upgrade the turbo. Im brand new to turbo cars so all of your opinions and info are much appreciated!

I have to wholeheartedly disagree with GTST about the R34 SMIC to FMIC issue.

I gained 16rwkw kw between my R34 SMIC and 600x300 FMIC install.

Also the difference in performance was instantly noticeable for me. Have you ever noticed how your car drives harder during the evenings or on cool days?Thats how it feels all the time with the FMIC fitted.

After a brief thrash you can feel the r34 cooler is heat soaked. Not so with the FMIC.

I think the FMIC is totally worth it in Aussie heat let alone in NZ.

heres my dynos, differences are from R34 SMIC to FMIC and a touchup on the SAFC/SITC

On the dyno I could eassily duplicate that result without even changin the intercooler. Simply do consecutive power runs, heat soak the intercooler and make sure the dyno fan is pointing at the radiator, not the SMIC. Then let it cool, point the dyno fan at the intercooler, not the radiator, and bingo there's your power increase.

Many dyno guys don't even know that they are skewing the result on a car with a SMIC by pointing the dyno fan only at the radiator. Then when it comes back with a FMIC, of course the dyno fan is pointed at it, to get air to the radiator behind.

Obviously when you are driving along the road the air is going to both the radiator and the SMIC. That's why our dyno has two fans, because we try and duplicate race conditions.

As for the cool night power increase, that's mostly to do with the lower ambient air temperatures. Mostly the air temp going into the turbo, that has a 100% effect on power output, Whereas the most efficient intercooler I have seen was 70% effective at best.

I have to totally agree with your analysis there SK about the dyno-fan set up. I went to a dyno day SAU SA had last year & had my 33 run on the dyno (Full turbo back 3-inch system, everything else standard including SMIC).

I watched other 33's that didn't have a complete 3-inch system & while their power figures were lower, they were more consistent with a maximum of about 2-3 RWKW variation, like every other car that went on the dyno (primarily skylines & other nissans of various specs).

However when my 33 went on it dropped 7 RWKW from the first to second consecutive run (warm day ~28-30 degrees) on a well warmed up engine. Power figures were 177 then 170 RWKW respectively.

While I believe that the efficiency gained from the exhaust system had also highlighted the inefficiency of the intercooler, it had been exacerbated by the fact the fan had not been blowing very much air on it, if any.

Having said that. I do notice a significant power loss on warm to hot days (feels a lot more that just 7RWKW) regardless of the speed being travelled at, and am sure that it would maintain a higher & more consistent amount of power from a much larger fmic in these conditions.

Have a closer look adriano, its 11.2 psi vs 11.5 - so very minimal difference...

Looks like 11.2 vs 6.5 psi to me...

In which case the dyno results are compromised to the point of being absolutely useless at proving any modification related gains

as per the original question, the retune may be benificial.

The front mount will be of limited value if any to the stock turbo but, will help once you step up to a bigger unit as planned.

Further to what sydneykid stated, a dyno is a bit lacking when it comes to high speed indications of both intake air draw /cold air feed and the intercooler performance. Thats what makes data logging and your own O2 wideband such a cool thing to have. I've always asked for my final tweaks done with the bonnet down on the rare trip to the dyno to try and help this out. Always results in a lower power figure but, I have found my cars always run more consistantly.

both runs were at a shade over 11 psi.

Ambient temps were roughly the same, dyno is the same, the fan may have caused a bit of a difference.

The 6.5psi run was with the boost controller, safc and sitc set to zero.

I noticed the difference in performance though

answer: very important!!!

had the tune done a while ago now. dyno showed gains of around 15-20kw at same boost. but more importantly, the proof is in the driving. and there are certainly benefits throughout the range.

if you're upgrading to a fmic, get it tuned, eventually

    • Hey keep the ideas coming, I'm always keen on projects! But, problem fixed!  I got a cheapie ozito scope from Bunnings and had a good look in and around the bearing and sensor hole. I couldn't see a smoking gun but the bearing looked a bit strange, especially when comparing with a new one. I thought the cover had come off the bearing magnets.  Sorry for pics of a screen, I didn't have an SD card.     Good thing I had the old one to inspect. So, given I'm like a pit crew with wheel bearings and luckily I had a spare bearing because I f**ked up my parts order, I decided to just smash it out. Got the old one out in about an hour. So much easier when the parts haven't had a chance to rust together yet. 😂 And, well, found the problem.    In the second pic at about the 8 o'clock position, you'll see what I think is the tip of the old sensor.  The new sensor has definitely been rubbing but it's all intact, just a little shiny so I'm hoping it's fine.  The car brakes perfectly now and no errors.  I think the job took about 2.5h in the end. 👍🏻 I really appreciate the help in here as usual. Thanks guys.
    • I was only looking because I saw some drops on the ground but it wasn't alot. Recently had it serviced will ask the mech to confirm. Find it strange that it looks standard though, can see in another photo of a random box 
    • So...not sure if you know if that has always been there or why you went looking. It could be old damage from a clutch explosion, or even just the gearbox got dropped somewhere along the line. Basically, you should seal it up to stop oil and dust getting into the bellhousing, but it doesn't matter too much and is not structural. I'd suggest something like a glob of JB Weld. BTW what gearbox oil are you running, I would guess the breather has been spewing it everywhere.

    • Very hard to make out what you mean, is it the squarish hole with redline shockproof (probably) under it? Is that pic from on top of the engine with the firewall to the left of pic and engine to the right? Either way, spray the area liberally with degreaser and try again, maybe circle the part you are worried about
