I dont think its a pub stunt. Look at PK junior...right up there until the end of Q3 when he dropped the load. Hes got no home town issues to deal with like Gonzo does. Teh car has found an absolute shitload of pace and from where??? Fecked if i know.

Renault have some smartiez in their fold and we know they know what theyre doin,...

I just cannot fer teh life of me figure out where all this pace came from>>>>

I dont care if some think im anti renault. Im not...but this..THIS is a shock.

Gonzo was struglin to hold down 12th a race ago and now hes starting from the front row! WTF indeed!

Ive been thinking about this for half an hour now and i still dont get it...

Either their RIDICULOUSLY light for the start or they found this time in spite of the fact it has taken teams years to bridge these gaps...years in comparison to Renault finding that time in 2 frickin weeks...

I smell mass damper bullshit again!

Smell? They have come out and told the world they hoped for good gains with their new aero, front suspension and a return to a system similar to the mas damper but within the regulations dictated by the FIA. They have mae no secret that they were hoping this big round of changes was going to help. Whether they are now a top 3 team remains to be seen.

My feeling is they are probably about the 4th fastest team, because even if they are light on fuel, they are moving in the right direction and typically Williams lose their way mid year, Toyota's pace always falls off after a strong start. So that only leaves RBR and like Renault they are relying on one driver at the moment... :(

Cant wait for 10:50pm tonight :P Will be real interesting to see Mclaren. We keep hearung about Louise in GP2 and his ability to come from behind. Well we havent seen this in F1 yet...so lets see what the y boy can do with the sort of pressure that WDCs wear

the revised mass damper etc seems to have closed the gap but i reckon he will be first to stop. he appeared to be very light and besides it gave the crowd something to cheer.

presumably he will get off the line pretty well and beat raikkonen for first lap honours.

Reanult do seem to havea good map for drivabil;ity and launching the car from the line. Hell, it even means Mark gets the RBR off the line pretty well these days.

Hoping Alonso gets out front. Probably sops early and races for a strong top 4 finish. With Webber home in 5th as Massa gets caught up with a fast starting Louise meaning the top spots will be up for grabs

hmm....says alonzo was running very light fuel load. Quite a shocker seeing renault quali second. Maybe he can pull something out of this ass and get onto that podium. As for the iceman, better not do anything silly and have a clean race.

Good job to Webber and Truli on the qualifying, now stay out of trouble and get some more points!!!!

what time is 1 pm for us then>? Is that 1pm spain time or 1pm in britain?

btw, feck renaults mass damper. No one and i mean NO-ONE goes out and in the space of 2 weeks finds nearly 2 seconds. I dont care what they changed. There is no way on God's green earth that revised damper is worth 2 seconds.

Thats absolutely preposterous even if hes running light.

DC is the biggest shock at 19th, although I think he will be 12th by the end of lap 2.

Said something about him qualifying on the prime tyre... True that Coulthard does have a knack of climbing up the field at race starts too... I agree, top 10 by lap 2 or 3..

Well, at that time the F.I.A as in the Ferrari Intervention Association kicked up a major stink on behalf of you know who because Renault were handing their asses to them.

If Ferrari doesnt win then no one wins...simple as that.

If you can remember the mass damper was cleared prior to the start of the 2005 season - cleared by the FIA.

Ferrari wouldnt let it go because they were losing and lobbied the FIA to ban the damper based on a bullshit technicality.

Funny that considering Ferraris use of flexing wings, barge boards or floors! Ferrari in my mind should not have won the 2007 championship because of what happened in melbourne.

I'm still confused about the sudden loss of form for Ferrari back in 05 and 06. It just seems they were so shit, was it really because renault was way faster or that ferrari was way off in lala land during these two years?

If Ferrari doesnt win then no one wins...simple as that.

eerrrrrrr... 21 years of not winning a championship??

21 years of Domination from Williams, McLaren and Bennetton???

Have you had your head on the ground or something???

I think Renault are just running light for the home crowd - I know I would run light if it was me.

DC is the biggest shock at 19th, although I think he will be 12th by the end of lap 2.

Hes definitely running light but if the times are anything to go by, he will have to come in after around lap 8 to 10...thats pointless if you ask me and how could anyone think it would be conducive to a top 8 spot, let alone the podium is beyond me right now..

Im just going to have to wait and see. Im going to watch Gonzos progress this round very carefully.

DC is getting to old for this stuff. Enjoy this season because i have no doubt he will retire at the end of the year.

No no, youve got me wrong. Im talking modern day, Schumi, Brawn, Todt, Stepney era...

Think about how much Ferrari have kicked up a stink when their domination was taken off them. They have looked for anything and everything to thwart the success of their rivals and have aired their dirty laundry publicly on many occasions. They have acted like the spoilt kid throwing the toys out of the pram when they werent winning.

It made me sick to see them crying to the FIA over Renaults mass dampers because, plainly, Renault were kicking ferraris ass with technology they developed and Ferrari werent happy. They kick and scream, dampers are banned and theyre back in the hunt again! see what the odd tantrum can get you?

It got McLaren thrown out of the championship last year despite the fact both teams had protagonists involved.

maybe he's getting a few fast laps in, pit, do another shorter stint, then come in fuel up and do the long stint til the end. Is that how it works?

Because as you know with F1 track position is everything because unless you are a second or 2 a lap quicker its near impossible to overtake.

Run the car light at the start, get it on the front row or very close to it and either keep up with the car infront (instead of losing ground each lap) or if first place pull a couple of second gap, pit early before anyone else so that you get out in clear air so not to get held up and then run a longer middle stint holding up anyone behind you that you can (as Webber does in most races) and then pit the same time as everyone else on the 2nd stop and race to the flag.

Webber tends to run heavier than most, he might have ok track position (borderline top 10) but doesnt have a chance of catching the cars infront because he is so heavy. I'd rather see him qualify at about 5th every race, then either keep up with 4th or hold up 6th whilst on the lighter fuel load.

Unless your car is quite abit faster than everyone elses the races are pretty much set in the first 15 laps due to track position.

    • OK, so regardless of whether you did Step 1 - Spill Step 2 - Trans pan removal Step 3 - TCM removal we are on to the clean and refill. First, have a good look at the oil pan. While you might see dirty oil and some carbony build up (I did), what you don't want to see is any metal particles on the magnets, or sparkles in the oil (thankfully not). Give it all a good clean, particularly the magnets, and put the new gasket on if you have one (or, just cross your fingers)
    • One other thing to mention from my car before we reassemble and refill. Per that earlier diagram,   There should be 2x B length (40mm) and 6x C length (54mm). So I had incorrectly removed one extra bolt, which I assume was 40mm, but even so I have 4x B and 5x C.  Either, the factory made an assembly error (very unlikely), or someone had been in there before me. I vote for the latter because the TCM part number doesn't match my build date, I suspect the TCM was changed under warranty. This indeed led to much unbolting, rebolting, checking, measuring and swearing under the car.... In the end I left out 1x B bolt and put in a 54mm M6 bolt I already had to make sure it was all correct
    • A couple of notes about the TCM. Firstly, it is integrated into the valve body. If you need to replace the TCM for any reason you are following the procedure above The seppos say these fail all the time. I haven't seen or heard of one on here or locally, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Finally, Ecutek are now offering tuning for the 7 speed TCM. It is basically like ECU tuning in that you have to buy a license for the computer, and then known parameters can be reset. This is all very new and at the moment they are focussing on more aggressive gear holding in sports or sports+ mode, 2 gear launches for drag racing etc. It doesn't seem to affect shift speed like you can on some transmissions. Importantly for me, by having controllable shift points you can now raise the shift point as well as the ECU rev limit, together allowing it to rev a little higher when that is useful. In manual mode, my car shifts up automatically regardless of what I do which is good (because I don't have to worry about it) but bad (because I can't choose to rev a little higher when convenient).  TCMs can only be tuned from late 2016 onwards, and mine is apparently not one of those although the car build date was August 2016 (presumably a batch of ADM cars were done together, so this will probably be the situation for most ADM cars). No idea about JDM cars, and I'm looking into importing a later model valve body I can swap in. This is the top of my TCM A couple of numbers but no part number. Amayama can't find my specific car but it does say the following for Asia-RHD (interestingly, all out of stock....): So it looks like programable TCM are probably post September 2018 for "Asia RHD". When I read my part number out from Ecutek it was 31705-75X6D which did not match Amayama for my build date (Aug-2016)
    • OK, Step 3, if you need to remove the valve body, either to replace it, the TCM, or to do a more complete drain.  First, you need to disconnect the TCM input wires, they are about half way up the transmission on the drivers side. One plug and the wires are out of the way, but there is also a spring clip that stops the socket from sliding back into the transmission. On my car the spring clip was easy to get, but the socket was really stuck in the o-ring of the transmission housing and took some.....persuasion. You can see both the plug to remove (first) and the spring clip (second) in this pic Incidentally, right next to the plug, you can see where the casting has allowance for a dispstick/filler which Nissan decided not to provide. there is a cap held on with a 6mm head bolt that you can remove to overfill it (AMS recommend a 1.5l overfill). Final step before the big mess, remove the speed sensor that is clipped to the valve body at the rear of the box.  Then removal of the Valve Body. For this the USDM Q50 workshop manual has a critical diagram: There are a billion bolts visible. Almost all of them do not need to be removed, just the 14 shown on the diagram. Even so, I both removed one extra, and didn't check which length bolt came from which location (more on that later....). Again it is worth undoing the 4 corners first, but leaving them a couple of turns in to hold the unit up....gravity is not your friend here and trans oil will be going everywhere. Once the corners are loose but still in remove all the other 10 bolts, then hold the valve body up with 1 hand while removing the final 4. Then, everything just comes free easily, or like in my case you start swearing because that plug is stuck in the casing. Done, the valve body and TCM are out
    • OK, so if you are either going for the bigger fluid change or are changing the valve body which includes the Transmission Control Module (TCM), first you should have both a new gasket 31397-1XJ0A and a torque wrench that can work down to 8Nm (very low, probably a 1/4 drive one). You can probably get by without either, but I really didn't want to pull it all apart together due to a leak. First, you now need that big oil pan. The transmission pan is 450 long x 350 wide, and it will probably leak on all sides, so get ready for a mess. There are 24x 6mm headed bolts holding the pan on. I undid the 2 rear corners, then screwed those bolts back in a couple of turns to let the pan go low at that end, then removed all the middle bolts on each side. Then, undo the front corner bolts slowly while holding the pan up, and 80% of the fluid will head out the rear. From there, remove the remaining bolts and the pan is off. You can see it is still dripping oil absolutely everywhere...it dripped all night.... I got another couple of litres when I removed the pan, and then another few when I removed the valve body - all up another 4l on top of the 3 already dropped in step 1.
