Birds
Try them all and go with who you like, taste or whatever, it really doesn't matter...my point is it's another minor for people to major in...don't forget why you're drinking the stuff in the first place! It's not hard to make protein taste good...to make it taste good and be healthy is hard or expensive. bozodos
ON and BN are the only 2 I know of who have been tested to have legit protein % in their powders without nitrogen spiking etc. Other brands I'll buy on special but never full price. And yes I buy for the flavour, like I said, 3 shakes a day usually (and its for convenience, inb4 whiners whining about muh real foods and muh supplement junkies). Last time the ON was actually cheaper due to free shipping + 250g more, but BN have finally brought out their version of Gold Standard at a really sharp price. What gives me the shiggydiggy face is my skinny mates who complain about how hard it is to consume their mass gainer and celltech, I feel like a broken record asking how hard is it to consume 2l of milk + chocolate syrup per day? -FIGJAM-
i did the milk thing. I used to be skinny, now i am skinny fat. Wish i didn't do the milk thing and instead focused on actual food. I love it when bigger guys say to skinny guys "just eat more" then turn around and whinge about not being able to cut simply Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/200767-gym-and-supplement-discussion/page/584/#findComment-7503703 Share on other sites
Birds
I'm a middle guy...I say both things to both skinny and fat people. Though I used to be skinny then learned how to eat properly despite feeling full and how to not put my hand to my mouth to feed it when I had to lose weight. There's no real food or fake food, as long as you're getting enough protein from anything; if you didn't use the extra calories to fuel progression in the gym then you only have yourself to blame for it ending up on the stomach instead of creating muscle. Markos has said plenty of power lifters don't touch protein shakes, simply drink milk and that's it. Milk is effectively a low % protein shake. Expensive way to do it but plenty of good calories in it. mr_rbman
I like many on here have used BN for a while.......tastes etc. don't really bother me.......more so what's actually in it and value for money. A good mate put me on to this a while back and love it. http://professionalwhey.com.au/product/select-nz-whey-protein-concentrate/ Edited March 26, 2015 by mr_rbman Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/200767-gym-and-supplement-discussion/page/584/#findComment-7503924 Share on other sites

I find what Markos says hard to take seriously given that a lot of those lifters are gear users (inb4 GPC types whining about "almost no one does") If you're on the juice, yeah you can drink 3l of milk a day and not have to worry as much about the calorie vs protein content. I don't see how you'd be any less skinnyfat from drinking lots of milk vs eating a lot of food, it's still excess calories. TTT
Bulk Nutrients were the ones that started all the protein testing wars. they still have a service where you can send your stuff to a lab to get tested. People were all like "oh well they are paying for it so it will be fudged..." I sent 3 different Bulk Nutrient WPC flavours to the lab and labelled them as a different brand. All came up within 2% of their stated figures. No Bull Supplements were the ones that were cutting the merchandise so to speak. You can get all the protein you need from milk without getting fat, it's a fairly balanced food in terms of protein/fat ratio. It need not be 3 litres either. My point is if Mitch was getting skinny fat from that and saw no muscle gains that's more to do with workout progession than the food he's eating or how much of it.Case in point, you can't just live off low/no fat protein shakes. I got bigger as well dont get me wrong but fat increased substantially. By the above logic you could hit your carb macro by drinking nothing but coke.... Birds
I'm not saying have a diet of solely milk I'm talking about the excess you try to supplement with protein shakes...you can easily get it from milk without adverse affects unless you have a medical condition preventing it. Plenty of people have done this and continue to do it; it's probably the best thing for a skinny person to do because they need the fat too. Calorie surplus is still better for gaining muscle than maintenance or deficit, even if the surplus is too much. Trozzle
I too did the milk thing shortly after getting into lifting, when I was still fairly scrawny with only marginally more muscle mass than average. No less than 1L of full cream milk per day, up to 2L, on top of plenty of food. PLENTY. Did not become skinnyfat. Put on fat, yes, but substantially more muscle mass, and only the "expected" amount of fat from a somewhat YOLO bulk. Inb4 whatever you want to blame for my result. Bulk Nutrients were the ones that started all the protein testing wars. they still have a service where you can send your stuff to a lab to get tested. IIRC, you weren't even required to label them with that info (anything eluding to brand), which means you could do exactly as you did - send them their own product without them knowing. They knew this could happen, which says a lot for their legitimacy. Nothing to hide, and you proved it Tolga. Also I believe MusclePharm were called out recently, though the news article I read on it was full of holes and sensationalism lol Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/200767-gym-and-supplement-discussion/page/584/#findComment-7504350 Share on other sites

TTT
Before the lab testing, Bulk Nutrients had reaction kits. Basically it reacted to carbs. I had some No Bull banana. I got some sustagen that was laying around (that milo type stuff that claims has protein) and some dextrose (essentially 100% sugar) I tested the dextrose first.. you mix a little bit in with the liquid, heat it in a microwave for a few seconds. the chemical, when heated reacts to the substance you put in it and changes colour.. bright orange = pure sugar. close to black = lowest sugar. anyway, my test on the no bull banana was slightly less orange than the dextrose. So on another forum, I was asking about lab testing and some dude said that he works in a lab where they test coal. Lab testing basically checks for the nitrogen content in the product and some calculation gives you the percentage.. He tested his own professional whey he had there and then the No Bull banana I sent him.. this was his PM to me.. Just got the result: 5.29% nitrogen. About half of what the stuff I ran through got ~79% or so. If it is whey protein (discounting moisture), then the factor gives ~34% protein as analysed. Sounds very low, but I'm not sure what you sent. Duplicate nitrogen results were: 5.297% and 5.278%. I didn't get a moisture run on the sample because I didn't want to push my luck with the favours, but assuming say 4% moisture, it still only gives about 35% protein on a dry basis. The stuff I originally ran through was professionalwhey.com.au aus whey protein concentrate; quoted as being 81.5% protein on a dry basis, and gave pretty close to that at 79% considering I didn't get a moisture done on it either, just assumed around 4%. Nitrogen results were around 11.8%. We are a coal laboratory, so can't attest to the calculated values (the nitrogen % is pretty much all I can put my hand on my heart and say is right) but it may give you some reason to pursue proper testing by an accredited food lab.
