Ok, this is just a rumour I've heard, I wonder if anyone else knows anything else about it...

The rumour is Gary Wilmington has left wakefield, bought some more land nearby at Marulan, and is building a driver training facility. The plan is that this will eventually be turned into a full race track, based on the old Amaroo circuit.

both are true but are different rumours.

Gary's new place won't really be a full track, short kind of like Oran Park south and more focusses on driver training. Initially at least it won't be CAMS approved racing circuit. Think more like Sutton Road but new and closer to Sydney.

And Mr Oran Park has committed to replacing it with another track (towards Camden last I heard). No firm date on when yet but l hope that comes through - it will be a full proper race track.

Also, MG Car Club Newcastle have recently gained approval to build a track next to their existing hill climb track. Not sure of how big that will be either but its also great news.

And finally, Bathurst is being opened to more events - last year it was used as full track 3 times (super taxis, easter 12 hours and the full track supersprint). It is likely that in 09 onwards a round of the NSW circuit racing champs will be held there as well.

Its a great time to see all these people trying to get things off the ground. Gary is the closest and has his funding ready so its pretty certain. Hope he's spoken to the drift guys about what would suit them too.

Thanks Duncan, you're always in the loop it seems :P

And yes, its great to see Bathurst being used more regularly - Will be used in 2008 by FOSC around easter for a race meeting as well, which is further evidence of the changes.

I say Bathurst should become Australia's Nurburgring; arrive, pay your 100 bucks, and go whatever speed you dare in what you brought...

that would be nice but the 50 or so people who have their driveways coming off it may not be so enthused by the idea. I'm not sure how they'd cope in the morning trying to pull out of their driveway into the path of a pagani zonda hauling arse up mountain straight.

as for sydney tracks, I'm still sulking about oran being demolished. and I'll believe the existence of it's replacement when I see it. fark, if it doesn't happen I may have to move to victoria or japan just to get some choice of circuit.

The days of Mt Panorama being a mountain road used as a temporary race track are long over, kick out the wanna-be farmer hillbillys and make it a dedicated circuit and watch how fast the town grows with the additional income.

I'm pretty sure Wakefield was bought by QLD Raceway (or a QLD based driver training company) and the first thing they did was re-surface it. They now want to add more facilites and make it more driver training friendly (they approached my mum whom is a -police driver trainer- to run it all).

Mr Wilmington is the uncle of a friend of mine, will have to give her a call and get the gossip sorted out.

The gossip will not be made public for some time.

Venue No.1 The new circuit between sydney and wakey is just about finished actually :)

Duncan is correct that it will not be a full race circuit for some time but I can tell you now we will be driving on it very soon.

Forget about a replacement for Oran as it is not going to happen. Tony who owns the place is really sick again (cancer) and his kids could not give a stuff about motorsport.

Venue No.2 My boss has 108 acres at Badgerys Creek and it is DA approved for a Driver Training centre. We are just sorting out the funds so we can start building on it very soon.

Venue No.3 Oh yes there is another venue which is going ahead.lol about 5 minute drive from my house. I have been involved a little with this one. It is on 100 acres and will be another Driver Training venue.

excellent John, I hope the driver training setups allow for something slightly larger/quicker than just a skidpan as well. We used the venue down at Sutton Rd for an event last year and the combination of big dry skidpand and a little track was a real winner.

Oh yes

Venue No.1 The circuit is actually complete. From what I hear it is around the 2k's in length and has skid pan facilities.

Venue No.2 Luffys venue will have a track of around 1.9k's with skid pan.

Venue No.3 Pretty much the same as Luffys ie 1.9k track and skid pan.

John,

wow!!!

Thanks for the goss mate!

So you think autosports will have a few days out there now when their finished?

Good to see more facilities coming up - great news!!

any "inside goss" for venue 1 - location etc?

:)

Cheers!

Chris

(p.s. thanks again on saturday for taking the mrs out for a few laps!!!)

are they going to be like the race track style where you can go nuts in the corners without worrying about slamming into the armco? or is it like a road course with trees and the works and one mistake will write your car off kinda thing?

Thanks for the info all.

I was hoping we would be getting a proper race track to replace oran when it closes, but 3 driver training tracks are a reasonable compromise.

But 1.9kms.... EC's straight is about that ;)

Still in land and Environment court Dunc's, but court has ruled opposition submissions to be dismissed. Just tying up a few loose ends before full approval is given to begin construction...its a 3.5klm circuit and international grade dragstrip.

Motorplex are funding it to the tune of 20 Million for 1st stage.

Its going to be big!

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
