installed some ohlins coil overs in my car, bout 15mm lower than standard but not when cornering hard, tyres scrape on the plastic under the wheel arches. i need to re-gas the shocks but dont think that will fix the prob. has anyone else had same drama? if so what did you do,

cut hole in plastic where tyre is rubbing or,

take plastic out of wheel arches all together?

havent had alignment yet but dont think that will fix prob, car drives and handles great. just seems like the plastic wheel arches are in wrong place lol. its only the fronts doing it by the way. backs are grouse

I had the same problem as well and it was due to me going from a 225/40 18 tyre to a 235/40 18 at the fronts...effectively increasing my overall diameter by 8mm. When I had 225/40 with the same coilover and same height...no scrubbing at all....swap over to 235/40 and it started rubbing the inner plastic guard.

Only scrubs the drivers side inner plastic guard when on full lock going up my driveway and sometimes hard cornering. Also, the more I lowered it the more excessive it would rub, I finally raised it up slightly which decreased it a bit...

not much you can do, I've gotten used to it...best bet is to remove the plastic inner guard if you want...or raise your car slightly to see if it still rubs as much..

cutting a hole may increase the chances of the wheel catching onto it and ripping it off all together. get an alighnment and professional advice. id say raise the car abit or get some camber kits to straighten things up. your gonna kill your tyres quicker too. what width fronts are you running? my frond ride height is 350 with 8" and i just make it. i scrape on my passenger side because of the bigger 34smic that pushes the plastic out abit.

i had this problem. i wore threw the plastic on the drivers side and my 34 cought fire. the main wiring harness that goes between the batttery b4 the fuses is directly above the wheel u were throguh the plastic and it shorts out and it catchs fire and wont stop untill u kill the battery.

just be carefull i was lucky i got the battery out and chucked a heap of water in there.

using 235s on 8.5 rims on front which is prob bit keen? no castor rods, got strut brace but that wont have anything to do with it. its only dropped it down around 12-15mm from standard, the ohlins use a sirclip system to adjust the height so if i was to go up it would be a fair bit, like 30mm so higher than standard.

. i was wanting to get a set of michelin slicks off a carrera cup car for track days to go on my street rims but they prob going to do the same as the road tyres yeah?

could i take the plastic out just for track days?

would adjustable castor rods and an alignment help much?

should i look into a firmer spring for the fronts?

should i get a set of semi-slicks for standard rims that are not so fat? (dont drive my car hard on street so they dont scrub often on the road)

sorry bout all the q's, just tryin to scope out what i should do bout it and thanks heaps 4 advice guys, much appriciated

remove the inner guard and roll the lip of the guard up.

I'm pretty surprised that it's happening with the car only 15mm lower to be honest. The wheel will still travel in the same path and the springs are probably stiffer so there shouldn't be as much movement for a given load. i really don't get why there is a problem now when there wasn't one before (assuming the wheels haven't changed).

porsche slicks are a no no. The rolling diameter is significantly higher than the stock rolling diameter of the skyline so more scrubbing. Added to this is that you simply don't have the adjustment to set the suspension up to suit the tyre. I'd be looking at semis but even then you really need some sort of camber adjustment in the front and rear to make the most of them or you will just destroy the outside edges of the tyre in a day or 2.

but u see if you remove the plastic it doesnt change the fact theres a bloody great big wiring harness behind there. i actully re inforced the plastic with a peice of tin so if it bottoms out again it will rub on metal not plastic and wires

yeeah its rubbing on the plastic just inside the guard as BH dave said. am happy to get a camber adjustment kit if this will help the prob but thinking i might look into some firmer springs or?....

i agree wit reinforcing it so i dont destroy the harness but trying to get rid of the prob all together.

should i mayb go to a reasonable suspension place and get some advice?

How high (low) is it? Centre of wheel to guard should not be less than 350 mm for the best handling. You can get additional circlip grooves machined into the Ohlins same as Bilsteins. I use 8mm separation with 5 additonal grooves for 50mm of height adjustment.

BTW, good luck geting the (Japanese) Ohlins serviced.

its only bout 10mm lower than standard so i would say bout 260mm from centre to guard. think i might just have to get some stiffer springs for em at this stage. apparently cramer products in melb can service them. have also been told that motorbike shops that deal with ohlins can service them for me too! they have sweeden printed on the sticker so im guessing they are not the jap ones.

    • That sounds like an excellent idea. But total self-sufficiency means exactly that. You have no-one else to blame when your system faults out and you have no power for a week or two while it gets fixed. You'd have to go the whole hog and get a diesel genny and all the switchover gear, to get you through such times. And, despite the fact that over 20 years, my system has been pretty reliable**, I have seen so many inverter explosions (or less dramatic deaths), panel and roof JB fires, and so on, over that time, to know that the stuff is the same as any other bulk Chinese manufactured stuff. The failure rate is well above zero - both on the equipment and on behalf of the meth addled installation labour force. And then..... warranty and means of redress against the supplier you bought the gear from. Best I can tell is that only a handful of solar companies are still around within 5 years of starting their advertising pitch. They disappear and phoenix like crazy. So, as per 1st paragraph, I suspect the only way to is go balls deep and spend maybe 2-3 times as much as you might think, so that you have every base covered. Plus, know and understand your gear intimately, so you can diagnose problems, sort them out yourself, etc, etc. Plus, probably have to consider upgrading various parts as the years pass, to maintain compatibility with newer stuff, performance and reliability, etc, etc. Whereas, remaining attached to the grid has an ongoing cost that keeps going up even if you use bugger all power from it. But it does provide the fallback in case of the worst case with your own gear. You either pay up front or as you go, I suspect.
    • Add more solar panels to the array. Call the electricity company and tell them you're moving out... Live off grid electric wise

    • I'm extremely suspicious of the VPP stuff. Best I can tell, you surrender any and all control of your panels and battery to the VPP, because there's no way that anyone could write a sufficiently useful set of "rules" as to how much you would be willing to let out of your export meter at any given time. If one of your main interests is to have enough in your battery every evening to get you through the night without having to import, you could easily find yourself with nothing in your battery at the end of the day, or part way through the night, and then be paying import pricing instead of paying nothing. I cannot see how this cannot come to pass.
    • majority aftermarket is an10 yes, but majority of OEM is An12 r35 OEM cooler lines at close to an 12, the hard line that car uses is almost 20mm  Porsche OEM is also AN12   i figure, if our power levels are close to 1000hp, then AN12 should be a must if many OEM standard power vehicles use AN12
