About 5 months ago i purchased an LG 42" HD LCD TV with in-built HD Tuner and 250Gb HDD and i had a problem a month after i got it with it freezing and then loosing all recorded stuff on the HDD so i rang them and was told its a common problem with them and that there is a software update that fixes the problem, so a guy came round and updated it and its been fine unitil yesterday when it came up "No Signal" on every channel and even the HDMI, AV1, AV2 and the Component Jacks which i have various Gaming Consoles hooked up to wouldnt work, it just comes up "No Signal", its goin in for repair tomorrow so thats good i guess. Its goin to hurt having to hook the old tv back up after watchin stuff on the BIG screen ..

But yer anyways if your in the market for a LCD tv make sure you do your research properly like i didnt .. lol ..

LG generally arent bad unless you buy something which is being sold ridiculously cheap. EG: LG made them on mass at a bargin price so retailers could have a sale. Occasional models will have the odd fault but thats with any brand. Expect a two week turn around time if you went straight to LG yourself and about a 3-4 week turn around time if you went back through the retailer.

I have the exact same tv...had it now for about 10 months. It has the occassional freeze, so I just hit the power button and after about 20 seconds it turns itself off. Then turn it back on and it's fine again. I have only had it freeze maybe half a dozen times at the most in those 10 months. No problems with recorded tv or channels though...maybe I was lucky and got one that works a bit better. I got the extended 5 year warranty so if anything is going to stuff up...hopefully it will be during that time :D

Extended warranty really is worth it in 99% of cases. I buy it regardless with electrical equipment unless I can afford to throw the item out and buy a new one without worrying (eg: toaster). However most places wont sell extended warranty on items below $200 in value.

Hey you should get the software update, you can request the update to be done on lg australia's website, you enter in ya name and crap or just ring them and they will contact a service centre in your area and they will come round and do it, it only takes a minute or two ..

You should have S/W Ver: 3.17.0 if you have the update already.

You can find out what version you have by turning on your tv and pressing and holding the MENU button on the remote and tv at the same time until a secret menu appears. There are actualy 2 different menus, one called "In-Start" and the other "Ez Adjust". You can switch between them by pressing and holding both menu buttons again while you are in one of them.

Yer i made sure i purchased the extended 5 year warranty ..

But somethin i read on the Extended Warranty earlier today scared me a little, it says:

If a warranted item is relpaced or a cash settlement is made under the plan then this warranty will end when replacement or cash settlement occurs.

That sounds to me like if they replace the item then you have no warranty left ..

Anyone know if thats right ?

I've also found LG to be the worst alround, everything I've had of theirs it lasts the warranty period then bang.

Built in tuners and hdds are a pain in the ass, more things to go bang and if one fails you have to carry your 50+kg telly in for repair.

I have had my 42" Hd Samsung Plasma with seperate tuner ect for over 2 years It's running 10-12hrs pers day and hasn't missed a beat.. can't fault the picture either. It's nice to have a choice of tuner because they all deliver different picture quality, buggered if I wanted to pay for something with an inbuilt tuner I didn't find acceptable. My tuner goes bang I also have the choice of a costly repair or buy another. I also got a 3yr warranty which I think was samsungs way of trying to get buyers confidence back after the reliablity problems their first models had.

You've realy got to look at the individual models, almost all manufacturers have put some dogs out, especially when a lot of them switched over to being made in china< but that also bought the prices down so??

I actualy went the LG cos i wanted the in-built hdd. And yer i know i could have just got a HD SetTopBox with HDD in it but i just wanted it all in-built ..

I would have went a Sony otherwise or a Samsung ..

I definatly wouldnt have went a plasma, i dont like the resolution, but i love the refresh rate of em.

Just about every one these days has in built set top box anyways, doesnt mean u can buy a sick external one and use that instead ..

But everyone has there own opinions and favorites, thats what makes us humans right ..

Oh and HypeR33 its writen at the top of the "In-Start" Menu ..

You dont have any extended warranty left, that is correct.

I used to work for Harvey Norman as a computer technician. Ill explain the extended warranty process from the point of view which I dealt with it. Say for example in this case its an LG computer monitor. We will say it was purchased 4 years ago for $1k.

1) We receive product from cust, fault claim is made.

2) We test to confirm the fault on site, make sure it isnt a silly mistake by cust and there is a genuine fault.

3) We raise a claim with the extended warranty company. This can be for repair or replacement if we think its uneconomical to repair. Eg: If a 17" LCD was purchased for $1k four years ago its covered up to that amount. If its likely to cost around $250 to repair, and we can replace it with an equivalent product for around $250 (cost price, not retail), we will also quote for replacement. The its the call of the extended warranty company as whether or not they wish to replace it at that price or whether they would like to get a quote for repair.

4a) They give us authorisation to replace it - we call cust and offer replacement, or tell them how much we were given authorisation to replace it for and let the cust choose something in store. This process would end here.

4b) They request we get a quote done for repair so we send it off to the manufacturer if they do repairs or an authorised repair agent.

5) Repair agent quotes us price for repair and we inform Ext Warranty company. This is where it can get messy.

* 5a) Quote may be for $290 to repair, so you would think its cheaper to replace it. However a lot of repair companies will charge a quote fee if you dont go ahead for repair with them. "The Repairer" may charge $100 for looking at it and quoting for repair, so once you add that to the cost of replacement, its still cheaper to get it repaired. In this situation, the $290 for repair would be deducted from the amount which it was covered for ($1000 - $290) leaving a balance of $710 with the extended warranty company. This balance will be sued for any future repairs within the ext warranty period. Also, repair companies will also offer their own warranty on their repairs (usually 3 months). This warranty does not stack/accumulate with the remaining ext warranty.

* 5b) They quote $500 to repair, and the extended warranty company will say bugger it. They get the item sent back to the retailers to be disposed of and either give authorisation for replacement, or request a quote for replacement.

6) We call the cust and same process as 4a, offer replacement product.

Other bits of information.

- In either situation where the product is replaced with a new product (4a and 6), the extended warranty is considered over, regardless of original value of product. Because cust is receiving a new product, there will be a new manufacturers warranty on the item. The cust will also have the option of purchasing a 'new' extended warranty on this item.

- The cust cant choose a replacement straight away. The on site technician is given the job of finding a replacement that meets at least the same features/benefits of the item that is faulty. The cost price of this item is the total the extended warranty company will pay. Say for example, I quote for replacement of another LG monitor at $220. When you get to the store to pick up the replacement, you dont want another LG, and decide to go with a Sony. If the Sony has a cost of $240, the extended warranty company wont change their value offered of $220. It will be up to the cust to make the difference as the price of $220 is considered enough to provide a product at least equal to their original.

- The value can be a two edged sword. The technician can quote a large amount for replacement so the cust has a choice of a better replacement monitor, however, the higher the the value he quotes, the elss likely a cust will get a replacement and the more likely it will be repaired.

- An item can be repaired under extended warranty up to 3 times before we can insist on replacement. This can sometimes be fewer if the product was repaired during the manufacturers warranty period.

    • Power is fed to the ECU when the ignition switch is switched to IGN, at terminal 58. That same wire also connects to the ECCS relay to provide both the coil power and the contact side. When the ECU sees power at 58 it switches 16 to earth, which pulls the ECCS relay on, which feeds main power into the ECU and also to a bunch of other things. None of this is directly involved in the fuel pump - it just has to happen first. The ECU will pull terminal 18 to earth when it wants the fuel pump to run. This allows the fuel pump relay to pull in, which switches power on into the rest of the fuel pump control equipment. The fuel pump control regulator is controlled from terminal 104 on the ECU and is switched high or low depending on whether the ECU thinks the pump needs to run high or low. (I don't know which way around that is, and it really doesn't matter right now). The fuel pump control reg is really just a resistor that controls how the power through the pump goes to earth. Either straight to earth, or via the resistor. This part doesn't matter much to us today. The power to the fuel pump relay comes from one of the switched wires from the IGN switch and fusebox that is not shown off to the left of this page. That power runs the fuel pump relay coil and a number of other engine peripherals. Those peripherals don't really matter. All that matters is that there should be power available at the relay when the key is in the right position. At least - I think it's switched. If it's not switched, then power will be there all the time. Either way, if you don't have power there when you need it (ie, key on) then it won't work. The input-output switching side of the relay gains its power from a line similar (but not the same as) the one that feeds the ECU. SO I presume that is switched. Again, if there is not power there when you need it, then you have to look upstream. And... the upshot of all that? There is no "ground" at the fuel pump relay. Where you say: and say that pin 1 Black/Pink is ground, that is not true. The ECU trigger is AF73, is black/pink, and is the "ground". When the ECU says it is. The Blue/White wire is the "constant" 12V to power the relay's coil. And when I say "constant", I mean it may well only be on when the key is on. As I said above. So, when the ECU says not to be running the pump (which is any time after about 3s of switching on, with no crank signal or engine speed yet), then you should see 12V at both 1 and 2. Because the 12V will be all the way up to the ECU terminal 18, waiting to be switched to ground. When the ECU switches the fuel pump on, then AF73 should go to ~0V, having been switched to ground and the voltage drop now occurring over the relay coil. 3 & 5 are easy. 5 is the other "constant" 12V, that may or may not be constant but will very much want to be there when the key is on. Same as above. 3 goes to the pump. There should never be 12V visible at 3 unless the relay is pulled in. As to where the immobiliser might have been spliced into all this.... It will either have to be on wire AF70 or AF71, whichever is most accessible near the alarm. Given that all those wires run from the engine bay fusebox or the ECU, via the driver's area to the rear of the car, it could really be either. AF70 will be the same colour from the appropriate fuse all the way to the pump. If it has been cut and is dangling, you should be able to see that  in that area somewhere. Same with AF71.   You really should be able to force the pump to run. Just jump 12V onto AF72 and it should go. That will prove that the pump itself is willing to go along with you when you sort out the upstream. You really should be able to force the fuel pump relay on. Just short AF73 to earth when the key is on. If the pump runs, then the relay is fine, and all the power up to both inputs on the relay is fine. If it doesn't run (and given that you checked the relay itself actually works) then one or both of AF70 and AF71 are not bringing power to the game.

I have old genuine leather seats that I have bought various refurbing creams and such, but never a dye. Any info on how long it lasts? Does it wash out? Is it a hassle?     • These going to fit over the big brakes? I'd be reeeeeeeeaaaall hesitant to believe so.
    • The leather work properly stunned me. Again, I am thankful that the leather was in such good condition. I'm not sure what the indent is at the top of the passenger seat. Like somebody was sitting in it with a golf ball between their shoulders. The wheels are more grey than silver now and missing a lot of gloss.  Here's one with nice silver wheels.
    • It's amazing how well the works on the leather seats. Looks mint. Looking forward to see how you go with the wheels. They do suit the car! Gutter rash is easy to fix, but I'm curious about getting the colour done.
