Hi all

I have recently installed a catch-can to my 26 and have since had all sorts of weird hesitation / missfiring / random stalling.

Heres how I have it plummed up (From left to right)

Pipe from plenum area to drivers side breather: Left in place

Both left and Right side breathers are now piped into catch can

Pipe from passanger side cam breather to turbo intake pipes: Blocked

Now from what I know, the pipe from the plenum side of things only opens on vacume, on boost it closes up, which is consistent with my problems only happening off boost. What I think is happening is that air is being sucked through the catch can into the intake manifold off boost and hence not going through the AFM's, causing my missfire etc issues? Most of the time, if the car missfires or gives flat spots, clutch in and rev's will fix it, or getting some boost into it will fix it.

What I want to know is, if I put a 3rd line from the top of my catch can back into my intake piping, where the old pipe used to go, will this fix the issue and will the catch can still work?

Is the can sealed, or does it vent to atmosphere?

If it is sealed (which it should be, so it is an oil / air separator), I suggest you plumb it as:

Rocker vents -> catch can 'in', then catch can 'out' -> turbo intake

yes its because you have a breather on your catch can causing it to suck through that and run lean. Either pull out the pvc valve and block it off and have it a full venting to atmosphere setup which is illegal, or plumb the breather back into the inlet piping before the turbo.

The can is empty however, theres nothing in there. Will it still work?
Try stuffing some steel wool in the can. It will act as a "seed" for the oil vapour to condense around. After all, the purpose of the can is to remove oil vapour from the air.

    • Am I correct in assuming that the R35's are getting the classic skyline haircut off the odometer?  Quick search on carsales, there are 33 08 and 09 GTR's for sale, only 2 of them have more then 100,000km's on them (116,075 and 110,000 respectively).  And somehow there are about 25 for sale with around 60,000kms? Looks like the classic skyline haircut to me =/
    • @Stringycheese  Have you only gone to the one blue slip workshop?  There will be a heap of them where ever you live, good odds that the next place you go to will pass the car.  Unfortunately (or fortunately?) every blue slip / engineering workshop will be different and will be happy passing or failing different things - despite working from the same set of rules. It's kinda like 2 lawyers arguing over a piece of legislation, each saying their interpretation is correct. Might seem strange that this happens when it comes to getting a modified car passed, but this is very much a thing. A big part of the game is finding an engineer / workshop that is on the same page as you.
    • Bah. I daily mine. ~60km per work day, 10-12 thousand km per year. What's the point of having a dirty old Datto and leaving it in the shed. It needs to be driven and enjoyed while the govco allows us to do so. It will only be a few years before we're forbidden to even start up internal combustion engines.
    • Judging by that spring perch and the normal looking spring on it - not a coilover. Well.... it is a coilover, just a stock format coilover, rather than what everyone calls a coilover.
    • Yes it is. We get stock from Nismo directly. I'm happy to take photos/video of it as proof before I ship it with timestamps or whathaveyou.
