I'm still trying to find a wiring diagram of R33's that show airbag wiring, but i can't track one down, can anyone help?

I'm pretty sure just pulling the fuse should be enough Ant... But if you want to disable permanently since you do most of your driving on the track, then maybe you should unplug the airbags completely, it's pretty easy i can help you out if you need.

I'm looking to replace mine but not hook it up, Airbags scare me now. And it wasn't even me driving!

I've checked the docs I have with me and can't find a wiring diagram...will check at home as well.

Yeah even though most of the driving is done on the track I still drive it to events as well as the fact I still take it on drives every now and again. If the laws said both driver and passenger could legally use a harness on the street I wouldn't worry but as we are forced to use the normal seatbelt, I'll want to keep the airbags. Hence I want an easy way to disable and re-enable the airbags.

I've always looked at the airbags and thought it would be a bitch if they went off during an accident on the track but never even considered them going off at random! Like I said in my first post here...I'll have to add that to the list in the back of my mind.

You can legally wear a harness on the street! You just have to wear your normal seat-belt as well. :(

Personally I always just wear the harness on the street because it fits me better in the race-seats than what the standard seat-belt does.

Lol...how stupid is that?!

Thanks Neil....thats what I was thinking of doing but until then I was looking for a simple solution re: the fuse.

Sorry mate....I had a look and the diagram I have was just for the coilpack loom that I had from a while ago. If you do manage to track down a full one or one that relates to the airbag I'd appreciate a 'copy' :P

Snowman: did you hit something/bottom out etc?

I have been trying to decide if I should ditch the airbags or not. I was keeping them in, since I thought they probably wouldn't go off unless I was in a big one (pull lots of G's in right direction). I also thought that they would be nice to have since they help decelerate your head.

The opposing view is that since you're in a car with a cage and in a harness, the timing of the airbag will be all wrong (I think you arrive later than the car expects due to lack of interia reel etc). I am also worried that if I clip a serious corner that they'll go off, rendering me blind for an instant (stun from explosion sound etc) and send me off into the greenery..

Has anybody seen any documentation showing that they are bad for motorsport? I always assumed competitors pulled them out of the cars as they are heavy (my passenger bag weighs 4kg).

Cheers,

Scott.

Scott - I didn't clip/hit anything. I had just pulled out of a slide on a skidpan but I was just straightening up when it went off and I really wasn't going fast at all (like I don't think I was even going fast enough that the airbag should have deployed even if I'd crashed straight into a tree).

    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go
