Us WA ppl are in the middle of organising a trip down to the Motorplex in the next couple of weeks and I was looking for advice on launch techniques for a R32 GTR.

I have dialed up 5,000rpm on the street and it bogs, whereas 6500rpm is pretty good in my opinion. What is a good launch rpm for a proper strip?

I want the GTR's first run session(not to mention mine) to be a good, fast and safe outing. I hope redline launches aren't going to to be the order of the day as I'd prefer not to rape my car to get a good time when a sensible approach will net a good result.

Fingers crossed for 12's.

From memory there was a .30sec reduction in ET by increasing launch rpm from 5,500 - 7,000rpm, terminal speed went up by 4 - 6kph as well.

7,000 launches give a fair whack of wheel spin and spinning in 2nd was also common, depending on whether I got the shift to 2nd right.

I did 4 13.0xx sec passes in a row with my old clutch which was a factory item about half worn with a dodgy flywheel face. The MC day the Perth people had last Sunday was my first chance to flog the new clutch and it has proven to be pretty bloody good for a clutch that isn't any harsher or harder to drive than the factory unit.

The day at the drags was good, but no 12sec. passes just lost of 13.0's!! That was with the old clutch slipping a bit and 50L of fuel on board. Next time 1/4 tank of fuel and I'll have a 12sec timeslip in my pocket.

heres ulas results

1st run...

5 grand dump, as i usually do on the street.

60 foot - 2.024

ET - 13.129

MPH - 106.52

2nd run...

i thought that i was wheelspinning too much off the line so i took off at a 4 grand dump (wrong thing to do!)

reaction time

60 foot - 2.310

ET - 13.903

MPH - 104.61

3rd run...

on this run, we all decided that i just launch at a 7 grand dump. the car rocketed!

60 foot - 1.881

ET - 12.776

MPH - 107.41

ok cool... have u had it tuned?

ula had his tuned at the dyno day we had not long ago... cant remember the mods he has but its nothing outrageous but i remember he was getting 210rwkw or around 275rwhp.

hes running the stock GTR rims and not sure on the tyres

heya Rhino... my rims are standard with crappy 225 rubber on them. clutch has also been upgraded but mines only a cat back exhaust. our theory was that you have to get the rear wheels to spin so the computer picks it up and then moves power to the front wheels which gets you the better take off, hence the 7000 dump. i wasn't game to try the rev limiter dump (only on gran turismo 3 hehe :) ) i know that my times wouldnt improve unless i had better and wider rubber. hope you get a good time!

Hey Guys,

Use the rev limiter. Thats what it's there for!

The best way to get consistent launching is to take off the same

every time.Hold the revs up around 5-6000 then when the first

amber comes on flatten it and watch for the green.The trick is not

to sidestep the clutch(which will create problems-trust me) but to

ease it off with a little bit of slip.You must hold the car on the line

with the handbrake(or a line locker)to take up the slack in the

driveline.I have smashed std driveshafts, diff output shafts,3 gearboxes, & recently an HKS driveshaft!!! It just takes practice.

You shouldn't start breaking things until you pass 300rwkw, so if

your GTR is stock or mild give it heaps.Biggest problem is tyres.

Old, hard road tyres will not hook up.Borrow some sticky ones,

do big burnouts, experiment with tyre pressures,etc.

Drag racing GTRs is great fun.

I took out my R34 which only has exhaust & apexi power FC and

ran 12.1 @ 115mph! Don't over rev it. If your car is not making power over 7000rpm change gears earlier - it will run faster.

Yep,

I do drive my R34 that hard.It's the only way to get it off the line

properly without bogging.Check out the Jap guys.You always hear

them popping on the rev limiter before they launch.:burnout:

Go hard or Go home.With the R33(OS 3 Litre engine) I sit on

9000 rpm for at least 5 seconds before launch to build up the boost.Any 4WD with a small capacity turbo engine needs revs to

launch hard.They don't have much bottom end torque, so if you

come off the clutch too early you bog the engine, lose torque, &

lose time. It is much easier to launch a V8 because they have so much torque.My old HJ holden ute (350 chev) used to launch at

4-4500rpm, run a 1.4 60ft, & 10.1 @ 133 mph.Also most V8s use

a trans & torque convertor which multiplies the torque & literally

slingshots the car off the line.

We are doing it the hard way with Hi-tech, multivalve,turbocharged,small capacity engines - & using solid clutches & manual gearboxs plus hard street suspension/steet tyres.It is much harder than old school drag racing, but it is a challenge, and it is great fun.Dropping the clutch at full revs, changing 4 or 5 gears,keeping the engine on boost,and all the while trying to keep the car off the wall is very entertaining!

There is no doubt that V8s are king of competition drag racing,

but you try and drive a 10sec V8 car on the street reliably.

This is where Hi-tech comes into it's own.They handle well, go like stink,behave on the street in traffic,& have all the creature comforts.Go skylines!!!

    • Ok I get you. But isn’t the butterfly intake a headache with the +T?  see this is my plan so far but please advise me into the right direction.  Nistune Ecu, 1000cc Bosch injectors, TD05 or TD06 Kinugawa turbo using stock rb25det exhuast manifold, walbro fuel pump unsure of model I think it’s 450/460, spitfire coils and sparks to suit and a R35 MAF sensor and boost sensor.    I was thinking maybe do a cheap eBay plenum $400-500 or try find a stock det neo intake. I think I’d port match it so it’s getting the full capacity but open to advice please.  Thanks 
    • The issue now is the 'fuel cut' while driving, and when it happend, it does not stall. This, I did not test the fuel pressure while driving as I cannot with a fuel pressure gauge. I do have Nistune logs, yes. I have also replaced the MAF Sensor.   Also related to the FPG Fuel Hanger – I just realized that I need a Deutsch Crimp Tool to crimp some cables for the FPG Fuel Hanger. Need to purchase additional cables as the kit only included 2, which are for the float. FPG has not responded to my emails so far since purchasing. I thought about taking it to someone and having it done professionally, but I am reluctant since everyone I took it to messed up in some way.  
    • There's a good German place in Brisbane if youre up for the drive 😛
    • The German place in Cabramatta was rock solid, fresh pretzel cooked to order back then. Then it went all quiet, after all the poker machines were removed, then I believe it closed for good. I did drive past the other week and noticed outdoor lighting a big screen, but no idea what is there now.  
    • Yeah I suspect even if you hold airmass per cycle/cylinder constant if you get too far away from stock you're still going to have problems running the factory tune within the bounds of the factory load scale. Cams, different displacement/rod ratio, etc. I'm just lucky that the GTIII-SS with wastegate boost + CA compliance cats is pretty much equivalent to stock turbos. When I have actual space I can finally get it tuned and modify the fuel system for flex fuel to 100% handle any detonation concerns when cranking the boost to whatever those dinky turbos can put out.
