yea.. it MAY look good..

but while us jap boys can produce better hp and fuel ecconomy.. would u buy one?

and as usual.. it will rattle like on old steam train and weigh more than a steam train.. thats the only reason why they look at stupidly large engines like a 7L. Why cant they buld a 5L with a supercharger.. ohh yea. cos the mighty 'USA' has too much junk engines and parts to get rid of.

Wont find one in my shed.. EVER! Just another cheap holden junker.

The capicity of the engine does not go hand in hand with fuel consumption...

The 7 litre engine in the car in question will be more efficient that most of your "jap" spec motors found in mid 90's skylines...

It all comes down to technoligy, althought a push rod configuration is old school, the rest of the motor is not...

Example;

My old Rb25 (2.5L - 1500kgs) = 332rwkw = 250/350km per tank (98RON Only 58-60L) Average fuel consumption = 19.67 litres per 100 km or 11.96 miles to the gallon

My LS2 (6.0L - 1800kgs) = 287rwkw = 480/550 per tank (91RON +10% ethnol 63-65L) Average fuel consumption = 12.43 litres per 100 km or 18.93 miles to the gallon

My ZX6R (0.6L - 165kgs) = 82rwkw = 210/230 per tank (98 RON Only 14-15L) Average fuel consumption = 6.59 litres per 100kms or 35.69 miles to the gallon

All are/were driven fairlly hard often...

Obviouslly the SS felt slower than the skyline and the bike is faster again, but its close to the same performance level in terms of numbers/times. Big difference is the SS makes a lot more power between 1000rpm and 4000rpm as where the skyline was all top end power and the bike just revs alot... But at the end of the day all three will run a 11 second quarter mile...

So when it comes to corners everything handles like shit after you have experienced a lap with Steven Johnson at the wheel of a Porche Cup car round QR... :ninja:

You need to remember to make more power you need, more fuel, more air and more ignition... So the capicity of the engine particually with forced induction is involved, does not matter much... As obviouslly with my example the skyline was injecting more fuel per cylinder per engine revolution and hence it made more power and used more fuel...

What im trying to say is power costs fuel, a substitute for increasing fuel to create more power is increasing the capicity of the engine and adding more pistons and increasing the stroke of the pistons to increase torque which at the end of the day will add more speed/feeling of "power".

(Power meaning the combination or relationship of torque, revolutions and horse power.)

/End educational rant

What im saying is dont judge that this car will be a fuel hungry monster, as most jap engines are the real fuel hungry monsters once modified to keep up with the subject car...

As for mild modified GTR's or GTST's beating this car round the traps, I think you need to think a little harder before assuming this would be the case, as in a straight line this car will no doubt pull a 11 second ET and you need to pump the power up quite a bit for a GTR or GTST to get them into the 11's... As for corners, once again technoligy in these RWD cars is more advanced than you give credit... Mabey go for a ride in one before you judge them, I think you will be very supprised... Particually in the wet...

Hey Col

You say your LS2 makes 287 rwkw, I thought that figure was over all power and not at the wheels? We're a little biassed over here, being Skyline fans. Holden, i get the feeling have been our arch enemies from back in the day when the GTR killed them at Bathurst. So the new Holden even if it could fly to Portugal in one hour while ironing your pants and making breakfast, it would still be a Holden.

Yeah nice one Col. It all comes down to experience I guess. It is not everday you see someone think before they talk on this forum. I do feel though that everyone will keep talking shit as normal though!

Ova.

Did not take long. that happened while I was getting a drink before I posted. classic.

Yeah, ive played with mine a little... :)

Stock standard a VE SS puts out 225rwkw, thats where mine starded life on a dyno dynamics...

As for winning races, it always comes down to the team with the biggest budget and the most dedication and the best crew/drivers...

Its never about the make of vechicle... Its eho has the best overall package on race day!!!

As for being a Holden, Im no of for one/any particular car maker... I admire and dispise all on their merrits...

Thanks, I try to put some detail in sometimes to help prove a point...

I try hard not to offend either... Hence why i made my responce a general educational responce...

This bit seems directed at me, sooooooo

Whats one of these things going to be worth? Lots? Sink half of it into a skyline and id be banking on the line. As to the 11 second quater mile, well lets wait until the facts are actually released. As to RWD being quicker then I think, well no I dont think RWD is slow at all, but that wasnt my point, my point is this car is nothing new in the holden book, they have just gone bigger, it seems the be the way they go every time. Its like the cheif engineer got a picture of the last holden V8, put it in paint, clicked and draged and said aha! I have it!

In regards to the corners, I will believe hell has frozen over and the snowman is running amok downstairs before i believe holden and in particular HSV has built a large-block V8 that can compete with the japs round a bend.

And as to RWD being better then AWD in the wet, well :) I personally doubt it, but hey, if you like it, go for it. Recently out at the gympie skidpan we did some timed runs around a course of witches hats in the wet. There was a few different cars there, including a much newer then my skyline monaro, and I was the only AWD car present. An unfair advantage no doubt, but I was still quicker then all the RWD cars. Infact, surprisingly, a 90ish hp FWD corrolla bog stock driven by a girl (not that girls cant drive, but they do love to stick it to the men) did better then half the RWD cars.

I also had a go at some of the RWD cars and was utterly hopeless. I guess the GTR has taught me bad habits.

A fair race would be a R35 GTR vs one of these things. To enter a 32/33/34 GTR (or gtst) into it, mods would have to come along to even the playing feild, but the older car would be more bang for buck no doubt.

Also in regards to our cars being less efficent, I know of one 300ish awkw GTR (so about 340? rwkw) that was getting 400 - 450 km's to the tank. That cars getting repaired atm, tho not due to engine failure. Personally at 260ish awkw im getting 400 km's to the tank also, and my tune is richer then the packers.

Not that I disrespect you for your opinions. I just dislike holden v8's and the "there is no replacement for cubes" arguement.

haha your all forgeting something very important, you don't pay 150K for a car because its cheap to run yeah? you spend that much because it makes your penis bigger and because cars that pull big torque and HP give me wet dreams and chicks love you short time for a ride.

sorry about all the dick references...

Never said RWD was better, just said you under estimate the technoligy that has gone into these cars in the past few years...

Give one a go and tell me a early 90's GTR is still better???

An R35 GTR would be an unfair compairson...

Col is right these new aus cars are surprisingly grippy I Drove an F6 and could not beleive how good it was shame about the cheap ass dash, if it wasnt for a few things like that i would be driving one right now

Why is it an unfair comparrision? dollar for dollar I expect they will be similiar.

As to driving a new v8 RWD car, if someone would be so nice to offer one up for my driving enjoyment? :( Anyone here, anyone with a v8 dunnydoor...

I drove a supercharged 6 pot commo not so long ago, it was, surprisingly, like a commo, only faster. It also wound up crashing on a gentle bend several months later. Then after that it ran up the arse of bumper to bumper traffic cause its breaks couldnt stop it in time. Well thats the drivers version anyway...

Until I actually see something to change my mind, holden will always be competeing with heins hunter / whitley etc, if you get my drift...

Ok, not quite unfair but what im saying is an r32/33 even 34 GTR would have trouble, the new 35 is a totally new kettle of fish...

As for driving one, got 55k spare to buy me a new one ill let you drive mine... But in the meantime let me assure you they are at a higher standard these days than I myself used to give them credit for, as i judged a book by its cover many times... Like Andy tho i found the Falcon to be bland and boring inside, the SS and SV6 had a nice sporty interia and was much more quiet to road noise when cruising...

As for the supercharged one you speak of, I can only assume you are talking about a VT (which was the only series to come out supercharged, in certain versions) and they are 1997-98 technoligy so they would be as old as the early 90's skylines in terms of technoligy. So tis a bit uynfair to compair, plus cars dont run up the back end of other cars cause their brakes are shit, its always the nut behind the wheel that causes accidents like that... :D

Please dont change your mind because we are saying stuff to contridict your opinion, just be open minded...

Of course your gonna like the flavour you drive, otherwise you would not drive it... :(

Oh, dont worry, im in no danger of changing my mind.... haha

Holdens cars are good for what they are. There over-powered street cruisers meant to look good sound tough and get you laid. Jap sports cars on the other hand are meant to go fast, win races and make you hit people with soft foam hammers apparently...

Col.. u only adressed one issue really.. fuel consumption..

I notice you said nothing about the mega cheap, plastic, tackie junk they call a dash..

or the never ending joke of commoncrap seats.. or the dodgy leather.. or the fact that you cant see stuff all out of it cos it has massive blind spots all over it from the huge pillars..

do i need to continue?

has anybody asked about oil consumption.. tyre prices? what is standard on it.. like an LSD?

go play in the corner with all the other idoits who have been overwhelmed by the mindless drivel that comes from the sales team from holden..!

I do like the side pipes! :(

I only addressed the fuel issue as it was stated to be a fuel guzzler, which they are not so I was just clearing up that generalisation...

As for anything else, every car has pros and cons... If they were all the same they would only make and sell one car for everybody...

The A pillars are fat cause they have air bags in them, nothing you can do to reduce side unless you remove the air bags...

As for the seats I agree the leather is shit, but thats compaired to BMW or Merc's which are 2-3 times the price. You get what you pay for i guess... (I didnt get leather, I choose cloth)

But I disagree that their uncomfortable, they are electronically adjustable in about 6 different ways and offer much more comfort than the skyline seats...

Put it this way if the commodore was soooooo bad I would not drive one... But its very suitable for my needs, the skyline was useless for my job...

There is no way the skyline could handle doing 50,000kms per year, nor could it offer me a good road side assistance if i needed help...

Lets face it, I go out to central QLD, what happens if I have a problem with a mass prduced Aussie built car... Now compair that to a problem with an import...

If you were faced with having to buy a new car you would look at your needs and then find something suitable, right???

We are not all robots who like or dislike the same thing... My opinion of cars has changed dramiticlly over the past 2 years...

All I used to care about was going fast and it had to have greatbrakes, handle well and sound tough...

Now i need a big boot, I need the ability to carry up to 4 adults if neede be and I want something really safe, still i want a bit of poke (so V8 or turbo 6) and I wanted a manual...

I believe in a saying "Fit for purpose" and a skyline is great for going fast and doing skids and whatever, a commodore/falcon on the other hand is great at going shopping, towing a trailer, and a general good family car etc... The SS/GTP or V8 varity are just the same but with a bit of going fast and doing skids added...

We could sit here all day and point out the flaws on a skyline, but whats the point all cars have flaws like I said above if there were a "perfect" car on the market we would all but it... If your happy with what you drive then great, im not trying to sell you another car... Was just pointing out they certainlly dont use alot of fuel...

    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
