Pulled inlet pipe off turbo read below down the page.

Hi guys,

basically the noise its kind of like a quiet external gate with a screamer, but heres the punch... its only noticible (well really auditable) in first gear.

Car is boosting normal, all other vital signs are normal.

I can load it up in 3rd gear full boost and no noise. So im not thinking its the turbo. Im hoping its a gasket, but again i would think it would be consistant.

Either way its loudest in first.

Any ideas? It might be a gasket as its not doing very high revs when testing it in 3rd

then again, its not really noticible in second (although i think i can hear it)

any chances of it being in the gearbox, and only effecting first gear?

I did a search but it seems to be different, as its only really first gear. Which to me points to the box.

Best way to describe is a shriek, or close to an external gate with a screamer (but not that loud thank god)

any feed back would be great  car is manual by the way

Yeh. I have just been babying it around recently moving gear to my new house. Now its suddenly making this noise, but to get it to happen i need to really pin it and get it revving

Surly I'm thinking Mafia's on the sulphuric money, but why 1st gear i still think? Theres no real load, creating no real boost to = the squeal + (real boost pressure)

Stranger still...

thats exactly my thoughts aswell, its only there in first. But its definitely there. when next to another car its nearly like a screamer lol

then second its gone (i think - no where near to the same level anyway)

thanks for the thoughts guys ill check over for some leaks

Maybe the engine is just scared...

:laughing-smiley-014:

Of me... never... the drivers we have around our town to contend with though... possibly.

I just cant work out why its there in first and not the others. I really gotta be revving it hard to, like probably from 5500 onwards

i had the exact same thing happen in my old S13, was a crack in the manifold, would only do it at high revs, when the engine and turbo were hot as, forcing the crack to widden enough to let air out... check the welds in youe manifold, its a possibility it could be cracked, sounds very similar to the problem i had.

I had the exact same problem in my 32 when I first got it.it only did the noise in first gear. And if I dropped the boost down from 1 BAR down to .8 then it didnt do it as badly. After a year and a bit The Turbo eventually started getting the old waft of white cloud after sitting at the traffic lights so I had the turbo off and rebuilt along with all new hoses and a new dump pipe while I was at it. Never had the problem again after this.I never realised what sort of gain this all made to spool up.Fantastic!!.Just wish I changed the CAT converter as well...oh well

Thats what I was thinking.

The sound you describe is almost certainly an exhaust leak somewhere near the turbo. Could be a craked manifold or dump pipe, could be loose turbo/dump/mani bolts, or could be a gasket on the edge of death. Check all those things and let us know how you go.

My 20 gearbox was shrieking before I pulled it out.. I thought it was maybe the clutch or something but when we put the 25 box, didn't touch the clutch at all and now it's gone.

Could drive normally with no shriek but as soon as I loaded it up EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK

Yeh well having all stocko boost lines etc still attached when purchase, and ive only now raised it to 0.7 bar, im hoping the turbo has abit of life left in it. Will start pulling shit apart on the weekend, fingers crossed i find a gasket problem :(

And the first gear thing makes me think gearbox, however a mate and I listened and its just there in second.

Will pull the turbo off on the weekend and let you guys know what i find!

  • 2 weeks later...

Update guys and grrrls. Pulled the front inlet pipe off the turbo last night, oh what a horrible job. Anyway, back to what I found. There are NO (sorry big typo mistake) wear marks at the front of the compressor housing. The turbo is spinning well when turned with just your fingers. Shaft play side to side is very minimal. HOWEVER. there is around .5 - 1mm of play backwards and forwards (as in pushing the wheels towards the dump pipe, pulling back etc). actually there is enough to make a small noise when doing it. So my question is how much play does everyone elses turbos have. Being ball bearing, any play at all is not good right?

Looks like it may be new turbo time. Turbo looks perfect, but its the back and forwards movement thats the worry. So basically how much is acceptable/normal on a ball bearing turbo like mine?

I have read that it will always have some side to side movement when there is no oil in the turbo, but this doesnt affected end to end movement? correct?

basically ive searched and read that end to end play = not good, but im just wondering how much is normal

    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
