hello all. I was driving conservatively whenh my car just stopped. There was a slight noise but i am putting it down to normal engine, gearbox and diff noise when you turn the car off and still rolling. There was a noise like a stone hitting in the front of the car and then it just stopped.I pulled over and towed home.

this is what i have found:

1)diagnosis reveiled nothing it flashed 55 (all normal)

2)no blown fuses

3)fuel pump works and there is fuel getting to the cylinder(fuel vapour when removing plugs)

4)there is spark although not sure if it is strong enough.

5)engine ust kicks over and over but not firing up

6)used diffrent spark plugs and the old set i tryied had worse spark

7)all coils tested ok(resistance test)

8)I am a little concerned about black box(spark plug amplifier or ignitor) as i am getting no circuit from one side to the other although i dont know if this is normal.

9)i have a safc installed although i doubt it has anything to do with it as i have checked all conections and all are good

Is there any other diagnostic procedure i can follow or does anyone have any technical advice

PLEASE HELP

SOS

Hey buddy,

Sounds like an ignition problem to me. If engines just don't go like that it's usually fuel or spark and it sounds like something electrical blew. For the engine to not go at all it would have to be something common to all cylinders as you're hardly going to lose all six coil packs or plugs at once. Maybe your ignition relay blew? Might be a wiring problem although this is less likely as you'd probably get no spark at all. Also could be a amplifier problem if the earth is damaged or something? I'd be getting the auto-electrician or mechanic to my place asap. :uh-huh:

Have included a wiring diagram which may help if you haven't got it already...

The sound like a stone hitting, was it very loud? I am thinking (but hoping I am wrong) that it MAY be the timing belt? You also mentioned other noises when the car was slowing down.

Just a thought. If you get someone to turn the car over while the oil filler cap is off, you will soon see if the cams are turning.

yeah stevo this was my initial though and cams are turning.I only just changed it and thats wot i thought it was.I tested the coil amplifier and it tested out on other car as all good.I am concerned it is the crank angle sensor.Any one know the symptoms of crank angle sensor faulty? Is there something mechanical that can break in them? Why wont the car start with spark and fuel??could the timing be out due to afm or crank angle sensor fault??PLEASE HELP

pulled cas out keyway all ok.Timing belt did not slip as all cams line up on top dead centre.Heard from one person that it could be a bent rod.If so should the car still try to start on 5 cylinders??still looking for help car will go to APC if i cant work it out.

definite fuel and spark just no start

When in diagnostics checked all ok

Created a fault in afm did not pick it up

Created fault in cas did not pick it up

Created fault in coolant temp sensor picked it up

Has anyone else created a fault by pulling plug from cas or afm

to see if it is picked up on fault log??

Has anyone bent a rod in their rb25det??

hey hey.Found the problem.

After trying other computers and cas and afm and everything else

.......no compression cylinder 5

So for anyone interested you can bend me over and shaft me like i have been by this car ....although it will cost you $10 as i am trying to save some money to fix it.I just hope it is a valve and not a piston:(

ah but once again i have been shafted even harder.I removed the rocker cover to have a squiz and i found that the exhaust cam was snapped in two places just after lobe 1 each side of the cam retainer. Now thanks to kharma ,i will be in for a big spanking one from the repairer then closely followed by my girlfriend eeeek!

i dont know .I guess it is just bad luck the mechanic said that he has seen a few with snapped cams.A few meaning 3 so far and he tunes skylines and works on them all the time. The person fixing the car is the guy who tunes street machines gtr which ran 10.7 at willowbank on the weekend so if there is any one to try it may as well be him.

ok i snapped my exhaust cam in half just after 1st lobe. When charlies motors took the car they put a new cam in first and tryed to start and found that 2 bent valves and every other one was hit by piston so.....new head. The total cost is about$2300 with new head,x ray for new head and fitting and dyno tune .Car is ready in 1 1/2 weeks.I hope this helps.I dont know what u mean by the wheel wont even spin in 1st.I would get a compression guage used for testing cylinders and test each cylinder if all between 130-150 psi then all oil and compression rings ok.Therfore why a enging rebuild????But in my case if i damaged a piston it would have beeen cheaper to get a new motor put in.I hope this helps mate

    • After @Kinkstaah debacle, I'd never want to try and get it right 😛
    • The hood lines up with the fenders. The front bar doesn't perfectly line up with the fenders where the wheel arch is. You have to 'squeeze' the front bar 'in' as it wants to naturally flare out and be longer on the sides. There's a few threads where people notice this when they only swap a GTR style bumper and front bar. Unless you have genuine OEM items - you may be better served getting conversion kits. There are GTT bumpers to fit GTR hoods. There are GTR hoods (non genuine) to fit the GTT bracketry. MAY
    • The real question is, on some of those wild roads they call highways, how many times did a farmer in an old ute from the early 2000s blaze past you over double lines?   Tassie is a wild and really cool place, and after doing a work related road trip there January of 24, I understand why Targa Tasmania is ran there, and is so tough to do well at! We had a brand new Camry Hybrid that handled quite nicely, and thankfully weren't in an old car, because cresting some of those hills in a 100kmh zone for it to suddenly be like "surprise f**kers, this is a recommended 30kmh hard right turn" wouldn't be pretty. We weren't racing the Camry around, but we weren't slouching in the bends either. But my lord those old farmers know their old clapped out utes, and those roads, as they were absolutely hammering it!   You're also super lucky to make it up to Mt Wellingtong this time of year. It's often road closed with snow/ice! Also, I hope you hit up Salamander Road in Hobart for some insanely good food (I highly recommend the dimly lit Irish pub for a Guiness Pie, or even the bangers and mash!!!)   How long did the Ferry take to get across? I want to do a road trip of Tas on my own time, but I get horrifically sea sick, and I don't want me on the Ferry, just the car 😛
    • So far so good, about 30km on it so far and nothing out of sorts yet thankfully
    • Look at @Kinkstaah's thread on the issue.
