Cubes, i agree with you 100%.

The characteristics of a 30 with the same setup would be very linear indeed, but im a bit of a purest :P

Granted i have not actually driven or been in a nicely setup RB30 of similar mods, if i had of before i started with this project things might have turned out a bit different. Who knows :huh:

Though a very good friend of mine is building a monster 25/30, worked over from top to bottom and a GT-K 1000 strapped to it, need i say more.

So maybe in a few months ill be able to experience what an RB30 is capable of :)

I have thought about all of those options, but I am sticking with the 25.

I was thinking about a solid lifter conversion but I need to draw a line somewhere lol

I came to the same cross road... so I drew the line and stepped over it and installed solid lifters in my rb24 :wacko:

There's a bloke that converts the hydraulic lifters to solids some how (i'll dig up his details) or there's the option of Tomie solid lifter kit.

Paired with a set of spec cams you wish from Tighe cams (preferably 10.5-11mm lift) and your set.

To be honest.. Solid lifters with the 25head and less than 330-350rwkw is a waste of time. >350rwkw on pump fue (pump fuel is the important part here) and you really want to start looking at 10.5mm+ lift to that really helps reduce the boost you need to run to make the same power. Which as a result drops the fuels RON requirement.

I'd say go the GT40+ with an RB30, some wide 17" sticky RA1/RE55s ~10-12mm cradle rake and you won't look back. While its apart go the increased displacement and larger turbo you really won't be disappointed. 300rwkw really is the old 200rwkw.

Its not that much. Do it (GT40). Don't be weak. :wacko:

I'm going to squeeze mysetup on E85 very soon just to see what I can get out of it. Then I'm going GT40. Then.. likely GT42 but I wouldn't mind it stroked a little more (3.2-3.3ltrs) for that sized turbo. :w00t:

Id like to enjoy the setup i have first, considering it has basically been off the road for a year.

Plus im not out for crazy power, id just like a nice streeter. 310-320rwkw is still nothing to sneeze at and will easily smoke pretty much anything on the road.

And 300rwkw odd definitely does smoke pretty much anything on the road.

Up and rolling I've had no issues with GT2's, 380rwkw XR6T's and 340rwkw Supercharged XR8's once the trans is rebuilt hopefully a 350rwkw+ Turbo'd LS1 ute, thats providing he can get it to hook up. Insane torque. :w00t:

But.. that's not really what it is for me and Im 99% sure it will be the same for yourself given the 'potential' your setup has with forged rods etc etc.. Its about the feel/seat of the pants.

300rwkw was good for the first week if that then I was left wanting more after a recent trip interstate where I thought my car pinned me in the seat (when up and rolling) more than a Boeing 727 on take off.

But the clencher. A budget build 240rwkw GT28 180B gives me a damn good/the best I've had to date run for my money. Power to weight FTW. :wacko:

Onya nightsky, I love the purist approach. I too will stay with the 25 det option and believe me, done properly it wont give too much away to some of the other options. Admittedly I did go for the solid lifter conversion and am glad I did.

At 24 lb I see 510 rwhp with response to make some v8's envious. With a 35/40 (.82 rear housing) I am in positive boost as low as 2200 rpm and on full noise by 36/3700 rpm.

At my local track (Qld raceway) there isnt a corner that I cant exit on positive boost in 3rd cog and it pulls like a bull in springtime all the way to the redline in every gear.

Since the clutch explosion and ensuing teardown I have been pondering my options but at the end of the day i simply love what the humble little brother rb is capable of. Power delivery is extremely quick but quite smooth to boot, It isnt a lightswitch and is infinitely driveable both on the street and track.

Good luck with the rebuild, we will be on a paralel build schedule i would imagine. Hope to see you around some day and we can compare 25 notes.

Another friend of mine has a built XR6T. It puts out around 360rwkw.

If you think an RB30 has torque, this thing is insane. The way his car pulls in 3rd feels like mine in first, his in 4th like mine 2nd and so on.

The seat of the pants feeling is scary to say the least. But mine still beats it down the 1/4 which is weird because his feels soo much quicker when you are in it.

Now drop the larger displacement bottom end under the well sorted setup you have (providing you run forged rods, ati balancer and full length crank coller) and watch the driveability improve that will leave you thinking damn bigger turbo with more power and I can have the same feel as the rb25 did with 100rwkw odd peak less.

Quite possible Cubester. And yes i do have those features and more. But until my bud with the similar setup and the 30 bottom end can take me down on the track I shall remain smug and conceited as to the superiority of my 25. :wacko:

Thats funny mate, My old lady just rolls here eyes and walks away shaking her head when we start the rb conversation.She better stay out of my shed tho, i have a sneaking suspicion it was the girl germs she left there that put the mocca on the clutch. :wacko:

OK time to get the ball rolling again.

ACL bearings and all the valve train gear has arrived.

Im glad i ordered the valve train gear a few weeks ago otherwise it would have cost me hundreds more (sourced from US) if i bought them today.

Im picking up new idler,adjuster bearings and Gates Racing timing belt tomorrow (lets hope this time they stay in one piece)

I also splashed out on a new Synchronic 50mm gate :D

So if anyone wants a Turbosmart 38mm Ultragate let me know.

    • Thanks mate, couldn't find in VIC, ended up ordering one from NSW, getting rwc to get new plates and registration done.

I would dare say if you want response & also decent power, this thing would chop.   AND apologies, just re-read your post, you've already bought the turbo... whatever you do, make sure you stick with divided housing and proper twin scroll manifold.
    • People have got to stop doing that. ShatGPT is not a search engine. It is a hallucination factory.   I also would recommend the 1.05. The .83 will "work" for you , in that it will be more responsive, but I think you'll find that it won't be anywhere near as good running it out to 8000rpm as the big housing will be.
    • Decided for the first time ever I would tow my car TO the track day on the same working theory as bringing tools and spares "if I have it I wont need it, but if I leave it behind i will 100% need it" all setup and ready to go out and try these A050 for the first time First session showed I needed to stiffen up the dampers a touch but still managed a few 1:21's without much effort. things were looking good. Came in a dropped the tyres down  to 26/28 as they had gotten to 35/33C from 22C cold The first lap of session two I managed to drop into 1:20's. Then in the second lap into the second session. Coming into T3 and I suddenly lost brake pedal followed by some huge rear end vibrations and scraping sounds. Got it back into the pits after session ended and found this. in the attached video, all of the wobble is in the hub its self, wheel is mint, and bearing feels tight. lKXLqpd - Imgur.mp4   Deciding it was a bent spindle I tried to find bearing/hub assembly locally but was unsuccessful so it was loaded back onto the trailer i luckily brought it on to drag it back home
