haha ill post up my reply from the companies last week, when i got a little upset about searching for 45mins or so last week fro 98 Octane

bp: Dear Billy Thank you for your feedback, unfortunately there has been a supply issueof BP Ultimate in NSW, this should be solved within the few week. Regards Customer Service Team @ BP

Dear Billy,

Thank you for contacting Tell Shell Australia.

In relation to your inquiry, we are grateful for feedback of this nature.

As a fuels and oil wholesaler, we apologise for any inconvenience caused. Stocking out of products from time to time at service stations is an unfortunate reality in our industry. Shell always does its best to ensure a full product range is available to customers at all service stations all the time but factors such as unexpected customer demand, and the complexity of the supply chain can mean that at times we do stock out. We are working hard to ensure this happens as infrequently as possible. Also, Shell is currently experiencing supply disruptions of V-Power due to the unplanned shutdown of part of our Sydney refinery.

Our apologies once again and thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

Kind regards,

Tell Shell Australia

I tried to get some toluene a while ago. I found a company who supplied it, but they only sold 60L drums of the stuff! Way too much for what i needed.

Plus you've gotta make sure you mix the toluene/fuel properly... and its carcinogenic (gives you cancer) so its not the kind of stuff you want to muck around with. I eventually gave up on the whole idea

Couldn't find any 98RON in Newcastle this morning....Shell have not had V-power for at least 6-8 weeks up here...BP are now all out...Some servos up here don't even stock 98RON at all...

Anyone know anyone who has access to toluene???

I relented and put 95RON in with some Octane booster, Want Toluene? get friendly with a vehicle spray painter or paint shop owner.

You can find a number of 98 octane rated fuels around

BP Ultimate is 98

Mobil 8000 is 98

Caltex "Vortex98" is 98

Woolworth sometimes sell the Vortex98 as well as standard Vortex96 and you can use the discount vouchers.

The caltex stuff seems to make the engine run more power, consistently and doesn't seem to go off as quick so its good for buying on Tuesday low prices.

Ultimate I seem to get a bad batch every now and again but when I get a good one its really good. (also exhaust smells nice)

Mobil 8000 seems to be a reliable fuel in terms of batch quality but makes exhaust pipe sooty.

I used to use the Shell Optimax 98 but now go out of my way to avoid it.

If you were tuning with lean mix I used to think Mobil 8000, but seat of my pants feel I now think Vortex 98 is better.

Getting a good batch of BP Ultimate after using Mobil 8000 cleans out the exhaust pipe soot, so ultimate is a good choice if you are forced to buy after the refills on Wednesday at the higher price.

hmmm it think thats the reason why the car was pinging its head off last time on the dyno. So only good for a couple of weeks huh?

perhaps I should go back to trying Vortex again, i've been avoiding them every since then.

Woolworths/Caltex Glenrose

Glenn St, Belrose

Vortex 98 = $1.419/L without discount as of 19/03/2008 at 17:03 :P

I've only been there once when they had no premium, but that was about November last year. On a Tuesday there is usually a sizable queue, but if you don't want to wait you aren't desperate/tight enough :D

It appears that the fuel companies have developed a habit of putting the 'out of order' tags on their premium pumps on Tuesdays (lower price days).

There has been a fair bit of press about this and I heard an interview on the way home describing how the fuel companies order the outlets to do this and cut off supply if they go against the order.

It will be interesting to see if the supply of 98 comes good now the price is up.

Post up your observations!!

What you could also do is fill up before it gets too low, so that even if you have to use a lower grade fuel, the concentration of 98RON fuel to the lower grade fuel in your tank still balances out. Maybe add some octane booster if you're really worried about it.

I've been using United 98 for ages and my car runs fine. Not sure if my local has any at the moment, because I haven't had to fuel up for a few days now.

    • That looks good, but I think you're going to need much beefier side skirts now.
    • They are daft and there's a reason it never caught on. Steering feel? We don't need no stinking steering feel!
    • I gotta pull you up on this. It's driving me crazy. A shutter is something that closes, like over a window or in a cmera. The word you want is shudder. That LSD is clearly f**ked. Take it to a diff shop and get it disassembled and examined by an expert. YOu might have plates welded together or something equally crazy.
    • Define "starting to fail". Wy not just rebuild them?
    • Check the Nistune doco. There are a few assumptions being made here that might not be valid. I will list the things that occur to me: Base map. Base map for what? Base map for Z32? Then the cranking pulse width is probably wrong for an RB25. The extra 500cc of capacity might well be enough to prevent it from catching. Base map for RB25? I don't think you can load one of those into a Z32. You have to just make the settings correct for an RB25 in the Z32 base map. That is either K or the TIM to get the pulsewidth right. Loom. You bought a loom for an RB. And you plugged it into a Z32 ECU. Did you make sure that any iwre differences were swapped. From memory, there's at least a couple. And as per the others, I would suggest making sure that the fuel pressure is correct while cranking and that the injectors are actually flowing as expected. They really must come out and go on the bench, unless you do find that you have messed up as per above points. I would also suggest watching in Nistune to make sure that everything is reading correctly. That the correct binary flags are raised at the right time (like the crank signal), that there's no stupid values in K or TIM. That you have not got mismatched firmware for the ECU and/or a wrong image loaded.
