HI all

Is anyone able to tell me where the oil pressure is supposed to sit on idle on an engine at operating pressure..

Or any info as to where yours sits.. would be awesome.

I think mine is a bit low, and i think the oil pump may need replacing..

Any input would be great..

My car is a R33 gt25t, and has just had the bearings replaced, cause it has previously spun a bearing...

So just wondering if this may be the cause....

On idle after warm up it sits very low or bit above the 1st white bar.

I believe its normal, I had a Nissan 280ZX and did the same thing.

Its only on start up it goes rightup.

When you revving / driving its goes up abit above the white bar.

again i'd say it depends on the oil's people are using? thiicker vs thinner (synthetic) just let the car warm up and allow the oil pressure to drop before you go boosting away n all should be ok

To the original poster, if u have access to another r33skyline try hybridising the factory gauges to see if thats your problem.

mine goes all the way near the top when engine is stone cold? :S is this bad? when it gets warm it drops to around half way or a tad higher

Normal.

When the car starts up its gotta get the oil pumping which takes afew mins. Once oil has circulated the pressure drops / sits halfway / below.

When you rev the car hard you should see it pump up alittle again normal.

about 25psi/200kpa at idle warm is right, often thinner oils will go as low as 15/150kpa.

And it could be your motor was not rebuilt with the correct clearances.

Start with a mechanical oil pressure gauge to check things out

      The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same.       Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.

      Yeah, I guess its pretty easy to get to if this doesn't work. Just wait till next oil change and pull it out. I am going to have to do the oil pan gasket soon and thought I'd just replace it while I was there.  Thanks
