180sx is classified as "s13" inark.. i asked about that :P

Its good news though that we can finally import though. Those prices j-spec sent out seem cheap, but when i looked at it closely, they don't include the compliance (around $4500) or other onroad costs ($522 for rego, etc).

So seems that for a R33 GTS-T people are looking at least $15k-$18k for one now, and that is completely stock standard. So my highly modified sexc R33 should be worth what i want for it come sale time :)

Hahaha, the R34's reasons. You see they need to give them reaons for being Specialist and Enthusiast vehicles coz thats the way it works now, thats why you'll find a lot of the car with less power etc. wont be eligible anymore as the government see's them as just another car, nothing special.

yup, there is minimum power required for imports to be eligible now.. its all whack if you ask me..

anyway, here is the current status as J-Spec seems it:

Good news for the import car industry - there has been some delay with the recent requirement to prove compliance with ADR29 (side impact) for all passenger vehicles, however there are finally a few models that have had the necessary testing and actually been approved by the DOTARS in Canberra .. this means that we can start buying these following model now for import in the next few weeks.

Compliance prices are still to be negotiated in most cases - we have been offered some good prices at this stage but we expect demand to be greater than the available number of plates so cheap compliance will be very limited.

Nissan Skyline R33 (1993-1998)

http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/042-00.htm

Toyota Soarer 30 series (1990-2000)

http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/014-01.htm

Toyota Chaser/Cresta/MarkII JZX100 (1996-current)

http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/002-01.htm

Mazda RX7 series 8 (1999-2002)

http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/032-01.htm

Mitsubishi Delica SpaceGear 4WD (1994-current)

http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/218-01.htm

Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VII (new vehicles only)

http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/114-00.htm

There are a good selection of models that are only a couple of months away from being ready to import also, we have been informed that these vehicles listed below are all in the process of getting side impact testing done now (in estimated order of approval)

Toyota Supra (2 weeks away)

Nissan Silvia/180SX (4 weeks away)

Nissan Skyline R34

Nissan Skyline R32

Nissan Silvia S15

Nissan Pulsar GTi-R

Mitsubishi Pajero convertible

Nissan 300ZX 2+2 seat

Toyota Starlet GT

Mitsubishi FTO

Mitsubishi EVO VI

Toyota Prius

Toyota Hiace

Any other models will be tested and have compliance packages built as soon as possible, at this stage we do not have estimated dates of any of the other models but we can try to find out if there is something you are specifically after.

You can view the full list of all vehicle types that meet the necessary criteria to be allowed under the new SEVS rules here - http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/sevsindex.htm ... this list only outlines the vehicles types that have been deemed eligible under the new laws, a sample of each model will still have to be tested for ADR compliance before any can be imported normally.

.. it just means the certification is all being sorted out i think by the places that wish to become eligible, but its coming together.

There definitely won't be as many places as with the old scheme though.. but then again there were plenty of dodgy compliance shops previously too, so maybe it evens out.

The prices of R33 has dropped in Japan over the past few months with reduced demand from Australian importers, so the landed and complied prices are fairly similar at this stage even with the higher cost of compliance at around $4,000

The bad news is that because we can only import standard cars now, the sale prices of all standard R33's will almost certainly increase over the next few weeks as we all start buying again ... my point is to get in quick if you want a real bargain.

..well guess the increased market price of my modified R33 will be offset by the increased cost of me to import another car - so its all fine with me, or anybody with a modified car already here for that matter.

Exchange rate is still good for it though

Autech version is the RB26DETT.. that will make some people happy, but its still an expensive proposition.

Trying to get some thrills out of driving a way underpowered station wagon around last couple of weeks, i can imagine a "normal" Stagera (RB25DET) would be *damn* fun

Adzmax- did you try any of the places I sent you? I just sent my request for approval on Friday so Iam hoping to get the OK by this friday, I will let you know.

Everyone- I know currently that the series 6 RX-7 is not elegible for import but do you think it may be granted in the new scheme? I have checked the list of NOT elegible imports and it is not in there.

    • Thought I'd give an update. There needs to be scarce details in some areas due to ongoing discussions. Here's the journey of trying to make the booked registration appointment (again). Sent a complaint to Car Inspect outlining the concerns and made some demands. Went to a service center in Geelong, got assaulted with bullshit items on the RWC, as you know. Tried to quote $2.5k AND wanted a structural report Only seemed to be one place around Geelong that does them, they demand $495 just to end up telling me it's f**ked, at least $11k to fix and tried to sell me his own Skyline in the process (bro, wtf?) Started stressing about what I'm supposed to do with this possible pile of steel. Awaiting that, I was sent an angel friend who works in Melbourne and knows real mechanics and body shops.  They laughed at the reported quotes (don't get work done in Geelong) Car underwent some front surgery and brought back better They then sent it to the mechanics for RWC Registration appointment is two days away at this point. Mechanics pointed out two issues: driver's seat and shocks - that's it. He offered couple options and I chose coilovers. Frantically I scoured the jungle realm that is Facebook Marketplace (again). Found what looks to be a decent Series 1 seat actually - $100 Guy is friendly, offers to bring the seat with a colleague who's heading to Geelong (thanks man, that was cool) Seat arrived, looks good. Throw it in my car and drive to Melbourne and drop it to mechanic T-1 day, mechanic reckons job will be done for the fronts only, gets it done by 4PM Mechanic heads to get the coil-overs that night as a favour to help me make the appointment Get driven to Melbourne, drove the car back - RWC Unlocked! ✅ VicRoads tomorrow, the goal is close now. 🙂
    • Gtr are still available through the heritage program but don’t have the wiring
    • I remember test driving this car at Odaiba. All the controls are very light so it's good for commuting. I don't think a 1.2L turbo would make sense in the US though, you would be constantly deep in the boost in highway cruising.
    • As the Bogan Cruise Ship has nothing wrong with it, and is perfect the way it is, I have decided to fix that issue, nothing major, just a little tidy up and upgrade some parts that don't really need to be upgraded  1. Upgrade the interchiller, basically another fancy pants modern and efficient condenser, a larger reservoir (current one only holds about 500ml) and a better pump (the current pump has a little rattle, so......while I'm in there.....) 2. Move the battery to the boot so I can use that real-estate to fit in a nice big reservoir where the battery currently is As for a new car, I'm holding off buying one for a few reasons: 1. Not enough garage space for another nice car, yes....I consider the Bogan Cruise Ship a nice car that needs a roof over its head, which leads to point 2 2. I'm buying a joint down the south coast next year, hopefully I can find a joint with a nice big double garage that I can get a car lift in, or, it has a massive shed for lots of cars, and a lift (I really really want a car lift) 3. I cannot decide what I want, a new freshness with all the mod cons, or a fairly old thing that I can play with when I'm bored (old as in steel bumper) In other news, there's a light at the end of the tunnel, and it isn't a train coming to run me over  Not that I'm counting
