I've had a good search around the forums for this and havent specificly found thse answer I'm looking for.

I have a 32 gts-t rb20, and a 32 gtr cooler sitting spare.

A decent piping job to hook up to the standard inlet manifold by the look of it.

I'm thinking if there's a cheap enough front facing plenum for the RB20, would it almost be as cost effective to install that when i get my remap, and running a straight pipe up to it from the GTR cooler? POSSIBLY, although very unlikely, even using the GTR pipe for that section, and maybe getting away with a minor modification to it?

Has anyone looked into doing this? Or has something similar?

Also, can anyone steer me in the direction of a front facing rb20 plenum? I found one for around $1k, but can't justify spending that as I'm a student.

Any help or general advice would be great.

Cheers guys

Unless I've misinterpreted your post (which is possible as its quite late and I'm tired), no half decent front facing plenum is going to be cheaper than getting piping to the standard inlet plenum.

probably looking at around $200 for a piping kit from ebay. other option is to try and track down some used cooler piping to suit a R32 gtst.

A front facing plenum is going to be much much more than $200 (unless its a stocko cut & shut job or something) and then you still have to get piping for it anyway.

So IMO stick with the stock inlet and get FMIC piping kit.

PS.. How much did the GTR cooler set you back if you dont mind me asking? I smashed mine and thinking of getting a 32 GTR one to replace it.

Front facing plenums i have seen go for $600 to $1000 for good ones.

But i have heard its not worth it unless your after a lot of power.

Its hard to say though...how long is a piece of string...when does it become worthwhile?

I too think theres heaps of other stuff to concentrate on first but the shortened cooler piping is a big plus to me...

rb20's dont benefit very much at all from front facing plenums. if your doing if for the pure astheitcs, then maybe its worth it its up to you if you want to spend the money on a decent one, your unlikely to come across any second hand good quality plenums for the 20, and i would advise you not to go for a cut and shut jobby, it looks shit and theres a good chance you'll start leaning the motor out (some people swear by them while majority wouldnt touch them)

ive got a custom top half thats welded to the original runners (RB20 , i only got it because it was cheap, and i didnt want piping running everywhere, highmount etc.)

you could mess around with the GTR core or just get a cheap chinese kit that'll flow just as much as that old GTR core.

dont mean to criticise but it doesnt sound like your after much power so money spend on that plenum could go to a fuel pump or oil cooler, something thats going to make an actual contribution to the motor.

my 2c.

wouldnt going for a front facing plenum greatly improve boost response ? As there is maybe a metre of intercooler piping eliminated assuming you would have went the pipe across the radiator layout which seems most common. I would think that max power wouldnt improve at all however drivability should be noticably improved...

front facing plenum on a rb20 wont benefit the motor, you better off spending

180 on a wasted spark ignition system

70 on a good oil cooler

some adjustable cam gears

up and over intercooler kit with a good size front mount

this will benefit your gtst better then any front facing plenum

    • This car has run before on this z32 ecu can get the part number for you, I have tried with no AFM it didn’t change anything, I compression tested today 140-150 across all 6 cylinders, also set fuel pressure to 43psi. The only weird thing was cylinder 1 plug was black and fouled other 5 cylinders were just wet with fuel. Spun cas by hand and confirmed injectors are clicking

    • A 1.5 way is a 2 way. It is just a 2 way with a less aggressive ramp on overrun.
    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
