hey guys,

today i went to vicroads to clear my defect,as i was leaving vicroads, vic police/vic roads pulled me over..they took photos of my cooler pipe and my battery tray..they told me that they will be making a report in regards about the cars infrastructure, because it dosnt comply with the australian standards..

but the chassy hasnt been touched, only the battery tray has a hole and its done perfectly..they said i might need a engineers cerfticate..

What do i do now?has anybody experienced this before?they also said that new law has come out to target those battery trays

btw its jdms15

any help would be appreciated..

thanks

If you car came with an airbag (which S15's do), and you have cut a hole where there was not one from the factory (due to a FMIC piping or something)... then you sir are in a fair predicament.

Engineers wont sign off on that ever, as they don't want to risk being liable should an airbag not work and so on

You'll have to find someone who will repair it, and repair it to a level that you would be lucky to pick/see because engineers wont even sign off on a repaired cut.

This is from a VicRoads approved engineer who's working on my car when we were talking about holes in the chassis/body/etc

Also.. Police have only recently become tight on this, a law/ruling that been there forever

So yeah, i expect to see more of this type of thing happening once people get too smart for the EPA, they will then go back to digging into ADR's and other crap in the next 18-24months i suspect as people are becoming smarter than the EPA will ever be :)

Of course, there are lots that still aren't smart so could take a while to pin all of those people, hell, it might never change

apart from the airbag issue, i'm pretty sure that if you made a clean cut with a holesaw under the battery tray you should only need some sort of covering for the newly exposed metal to stop rust.

the issue wont be hole, it will be that now that the metal has been modified they can no longer predict how the car will crumble in an accident

as this will play a key role in your safety and how the airbags operate, they basically say its "unsupported" and thus could be marked as non-compliant

the fact that you have a rubber grommet around it and an intercooler pipe inside it probably means nothing, as the hole is still there

when nissan certified the vehicle with airbags and no hole there on their CAD simulator and testing bench etc it reacted a certain way

now the chassis is different, it will re-act differently. its a shame as my car has been modified the same way, dirty big hole under the washer bottle

and my car is fitted with dual airbags so ill have the same issue when i am picked up for it. my first course of action would be to speak to a workshop / engineering place and ask them

as ultimately they would have to sign off it i would guess, i would be asking them whats required to make it pass, which i suspect would be a fair bit of fabrication work etc

Correct , by law, officers are not allowed to force you or physically touch your car, i.e. open up your bonnet etc or take pictures of it without your consent - but I know how you felt, you were nervous and in the moment. I suggest you speak to Vicroads and do all that you can to get this cleared up asap, as I know getting an import registered nowadays is harder than before.

So if I get pulled over by a cop and he looks like he wants to give me a defect for under bonnet stuff I can say no I'm not going to open the bonnet?

With all this stuff coming out and being enforced it makes me glad I've got an aussie daily driver.

Lol, Russ your still a massive target with that loud exhaust you have on your "aussie daily". I had a similar problem with my old 32. I welded in a supporting ring of still around the hole, that way the load would be transfered around the steel ring, and the section that was cut would retain is structural strength. Don't know if that would still fly these days, i dare say it wouldn't.

Yeah but at least it doesn't have a GT wing. haha. Mufflers are cheap, clearing a heavy defect on a turbo import isn't.

I dont doubt thats what was said to you, and this is not an attack on you, just a general rant! ;)

How the fark wont they apply some common sense and approve a modded inner guard skin, or a repaired skin? How is it any different then a car that has had a minor hit in the front that needs a new inner guard. Or a hit up the ass that needs a new beaver panel. Its farking laughable that they wont approve a vehicle.

It shits me that more and more it seems that stupid muppets seem to be holding positions of influence over the rest of us. Not just specifically related to cars, but in all facets of life

Personally Ash, if this is the engineer that is working on your car then i would suggest speaking to someone else. He seems to be encouraging the legislation as it gives him power, influence over car enthusiasts which seems to make his business more profitable. There is a fair chance he is abusing the trust you have placed in him and is taking you for a ride! :D

Its a sad day when an engineer doesnt challenge stupidity and isnt willing to sign off on something that panel beaters do as a matter of routine!

If you dont have airbags you'll be fine J.

GunR32 - VicRoads will just tell you to talk to an engineer, even the VicRoads consultant engineers, will tell you to talk to an engineer.

Unfortunately they dont want anything to do with it most of the time, and the people @ the counters probably wont have any idea.

Go to the VicRoads website, and call the approved engineers and go to them from the start, i found VicRoads to be a waste of time dealing with (as they always are)

EDIT: Just saw your reply Troy.

Its not the first Engineer to tell me this, thats the worry point. I've been told 3 times now, 3 separate engineers.

Unless then are all colluding like petrol retailers or something, i dunno
