Hey guys,

As some of you may know I'm in the market for a new car.. the thing is I need to get a N/A (new laws).. and don't want another gutless N/A skyline really..

I'm looking for:

-Manual

-Must have some guts

-Must handle well (want to get into some track days etc.)

-Don't care if its a shitbox

-Roadworthy

Been looking at a couple of slightly worked 31's so far, really don't know what to get.

Forgot to mention, I have $1 - 10,000 to spend.

Any help would be great.

yeh i was thinking about the xr6's but there a bit pricey (for the half decent ones) + cant realy handle

as for the pulsar i was thinking RWD. nothing wrong with the n/a sr20's on a light car tho maybe a n/a silvia.. but so rare..

trust me, save urself fines and hassles, get a 4x4, put big tyres on it and intimadat the shit out of people on the road...

less attention from cops and u can have so much fun... i went from a 32gtst with about 150 to 160rwkw and i love my new 4x4..

tax time she is getting a rb30 and september a slap on turbo for some dose noise...

TRUST ME, 4x4 is the way to go.....

Do you care about fuel economy? If yes then like a SSS pulsar with SR20. If no like an XR6 falcon with some head work.

*Edit* Ignore the falcon, you want a car that will handle well.

This man had a good suggestion. An N14/N15 SSS is pretty quick, handles well, has reasonable carry space, is easy to park, is fairly good on fuel and looks good. Only thing to watch out for is the insurance price for a young driver :O

They are quicker than an SR20DE S13.

insurance is gona be more cause it went through insurance after the accident

MR2 is a good idea. It'll handle well and they aren't common which is cool.

If I was on the restrictions like P platers are now I would probably go for an N14 SSS. I never liked them till i went in a mates. They really go hard.

They're cheap too. Throw in some cams, headwork, swaybars and suspension and they are a cool little unit.

If SSS is too much for insurance some of the Pulsar Q's had the SR but missed out on the Viscous front LSD. FWD can be fun but you've gotta know how to drive them. I wouldn't have a clue since I've never had one.

No Australian-delivered N14 (Aus-built and Jap-built) or N15 had VLSD, they're all open diff. Overseas various models (including SR18DE, SR20DE, SR16VE & SR20VE-powered cars) came with VLSD boxes, they all fit an SR20DE-powered N14 or N15. If you want one make sure you get matching driveshafts or you're screwed. They're shorter ratio and good for extracting some extra acceleration. The car will rev higher at freeway speed, only big disadvantage. Oh, and the VLSD is entirely useless with any decent power.

Get a Nismo mechanical LSD. There's nothing better :ermm: And for reference the N14 does handle better than the N15, but the N15 is otherwise the more reliable, newer option. The N14 has IRS whereas the N15 has a rear beam axle.

I wanted an AE86 back when I was looking for p-plater friendly cars, unfortunately the Takumi tax on them makes them too expensive for what they are. Pulsar SSS would be good. But depends on what your looking for ie. if you want a project car or a regular reliable daily driver.

I have a NA Z32, not a common choice for p-platers as they can be pretty expensive to maintain if you get a bad one. It handles well, it's definately not gutless... makes around 120rwkw stock and has heaps of torque.

    • Yeah, so widen your search to any Nissan speedo first, then go wider if needed. I will say though, that there is a better than even chance that what I said first will likely come into play. They quite possibly won't come apart without damage. I tried to disassemble a stepper gauge that I wanted to repair. There was no way that needle was coming off the spindle, and I could not see how the spindle would come out of the mechanism behind. Assembled once, never to be disassembled, was my conclusion. Could be the same on the R34 cluster. Failing that - take the cluster to a workshop that specialises in automotive instrument work. There's usually at least one in every Australian city. They'll either be able to do it for you for small cost, or tell you it can't be done. It might be that "it can't be done" unless you follow some arcane procedure, including trickiness to glue it back together or something, that only experienced techs know.
    • Well, given that I, an engineer, almost never bring out the torque wrench to tighten up chassis bolts, despite fully knowing the theory, and instead rely on feel, which I happen to know is exactly how the majority of mechanics do things, should tell you the level of actual peril that exists from not achieving exactly 88 Nm of torque. How about if I just say then that 88Nm is at the lower end of the correct wheel nut torque range? Everyone knows how to tighten a wheel nut, right? And almost no-one ever brings out the torque wrench for that task
