Hi,

Im just wondering if any of you know what the spring rates of standard R32 gtst M spec springs are.

Also, does anyone know what the rates of the Whiteline springs in Sydneykids group buy are for the same car?

Im having traction issues, and was wondering if it would be beneficial to replace the rear Whiteline springs with standard springs, so that the car squats a bit more. Gary suggests that rear springs of no more than 3kg/mm are suitable for 'tractionally challenged' rear wheel drive set ups, but i have no idea what the rates are (and SK's inbox is full). Busy man i suspect.

My car sits about 8mm higher on the passenger side than the divers side front and rear. Its always done this, but i installed the whiteline kit yesterday, and its still doing it. Previously i had whiteline springs on standard shocks and sway bars, but yesterday i installed the bilsteins and bars to go with the springs i already had.

Im just wondering if i should worry about this and even change the height of the drivers side (bring it up one circlip groove), or just leave it alone.

When you say uneven, is that measuring from the centre of the wheel to the top of the wheel arch? I know mine were slightly different left-to-right, but that was because my guards were rolled and were uneven.

Hi mate the std spring rates for a R32 Gts are 3kg front and 2kg rear

I beleive the SK groub buy are 3.5kg front and rear can be wrong

anyone confirm this? Your traction problems can be your tyres have

gone off or maybe your wheel alignment settings to much rear neg camber

With the car sitting higher on the passenger side even after the new

suspension set up check to see if the guards are the same measurement

where on mine we found that the front drivers guard was 5mm different

than the other side.Good luck

Ill measure from the ground to the guard on either side to see if theyre the same. Probably should have done this before, but the car is mint, so i cant see it being out by that much.

Can anyone confirm these spring rates?

Its kinda normal, spring manufacturers work to 5% +/- tolerance IIRC,

Which can add up to a reasonable difference, but it can be compensated for.

Call into a suspension shop, they should be able to even it up for you.

Hi Shaun, the standard spring rates are around 3kg/mm front and rear and the Whiteline springs are around 20% to 25% higher. Not enough to make a lot of difference compared to the effort required to change them for drag racing, you would be much better off using the Rear Subframe Alignment Kit on the Maximum Traction setting. The other worthwhile trick is adjusting out the negative camber on the rear. We have found around 0.5 degrees positive camber is a good place to start.

It is not unusual for the RHS to be lower than the left, most times the car has just the driver in it and takes a set to the right over time. For height correction, the method I use is to measure the heights on all 4 corners then adjust the lowest of the pairs up the necessary amount. That is usually the RHS rear, move it up one circlip groove. That will lift the RHS rear 8 mm and lower the LHS front around 3 mm. See how that would work against your current measurements.

Ill keep the springs in then. My next move was to fix up the rear camber, as you suggest. Ive been told that the skylines do have rear camber adjustment as standard, so does that mean i dont have to purchase a camber kit? Also, do you sell the rear subframe alignment kit through your group buy? What does it include and how much is it?

Ill adjust the heaight in the next few days. I just wasnt sure if it was bad to have the springs under different loads on the car, but i suspect that 8mm wouldnt be significant.

Hey mate, the alignment kit is easy as to fit. You only need a jack, stands and hand tools. I did mine while changing shocks and swaybars so im not sure exactly how long it would take by itself. But id guess 1.5 hours max to do it yourself.

    • Food for thought, the stock oil filter thread is a 3/4-16 UNF, which has an ID of about 10 to 12mm (according to ChatGPT lol). Now compare than to an 10AN, which has an ID of about 14mm (Raceworks is 14.2mm, Speed flow is 14.27mm).  
    • Yep, totally get that. However hooking in for Generator back up is only a few hundred bucks for the wiring. You could put a couple of those in (for different circuits explicitly) and run a couple of baby generators. Bonus, you can balance them across different circuits, and now have backups in your backup. I'm looking at buying places that won't even have water etc, and I don't mind the idea of getting off the electric grid either, even with everything you've said. This country already has enough power outages that even the mains grid isn't that reliable anymore. I do agree though on spending a bit more to get better gear, and to add some extra redundancy in to the system too.
    • You can set hard reserves on your battery system, and it can't be discharged past that.  
    • That sounds like an excellent idea. But total self-sufficiency means exactly that. You have no-one else to blame when your system faults out and you have no power for a week or two while it gets fixed. You'd have to go the whole hog and get a diesel genny and all the switchover gear, to get you through such times. And, despite the fact that over 20 years, my system has been pretty reliable**, I have seen so many inverter explosions (or less dramatic deaths), panel and roof JB fires, and so on, over that time, to know that the stuff is the same as any other bulk Chinese manufactured stuff. The failure rate is well above zero - both on the equipment and on behalf of the meth addled installation labour force. And then..... warranty and means of redress against the supplier you bought the gear from. Best I can tell is that only a handful of solar companies are still around within 5 years of starting their advertising pitch. They disappear and phoenix like crazy. So, as per 1st paragraph, I suspect the only way to is go balls deep and spend maybe 2-3 times as much as you might think, so that you have every base covered. Plus, know and understand your gear intimately, so you can diagnose problems, sort them out yourself, etc, etc. Plus, probably have to consider upgrading various parts as the years pass, to maintain compatibility with newer stuff, performance and reliability, etc, etc. Whereas, remaining attached to the grid has an ongoing cost that keeps going up even if you use bugger all power from it. But it does provide the fallback in case of the worst case with your own gear. You either pay up front or as you go, I suspect.
    • Add more solar panels to the array. Call the electricity company and tell them you're moving out... Live off grid electric wise
