I just saw the matt black vinyl'd R35 on the news feed, and thought I would like to try covering my car in it. Always wanted to paint my car matt black, but vinyl seems cheaper and easier to take off should I not like it.

Does anyone know where to get matt bacl vinyl to cover a whole car, prefer in Vic.

Nick

you can get vinyl prett good on the cars... on my old car some of it was the smaller the rice on the bonnet and just used the tiniest ammount of clean nail pollish. couldnt even see the joins... and came off very easy

unless done properly, looks good from far, but looks far from good up close. vinyls tend to get fubar'd in the aussie summer heat, and unless you use a quality vinyl from 3M for example it can react with your paint or peel/warp.

Vinyl used for car graphics will not peel or lift after being in "Aussie" or any conditions if done right.

If installed correctly it will last 5 years easily and look just as good as the day it was installed. And there is no way anyone would clear coat over vinyl, that would be completely silly.

The chrome on the S15 was done using normal chrome 5 year vinyl, and they have applied it in small sections around the curvy bits. from afar it looks great close up you will see the joins. Its fine for a drift car but not for a show or street car.

I always design vinyl graphics so there is no overlap, it will last longer and look better close up...

To cover a whole car in matt black I would definitely get a professional installer and I would use car wrap vinyl which is thinner than graphics vinyl, lends itself to scretch and shrink far better and you should be able to get the entire car covered with minimal joins showing. Expect to pay though. I reckon the installer would cost at least $800 at a guess. not including materials.

As an estimate you have seen the cars that are covered all over with an image for advertising, well they don't have joins that you can see. For a price you can ask a sign shop that does car wraps to quote you on the job....

I don't do complete wraps...

it would be pretty pricey, especially to put it on and take it off if you decide you dont like it... chrome will be alot more expensive than many vinyls

the missus got graphics in green and chrome up the sides of the lancer and that was $1000, thats hardly any chrome too.

also after selling it, have noticed over time that it has faded. but depending on the colour of the vinyl will determine how long it would last before it starts to fade...

75coupe knows his stuff, his business I guess. Would have a better idea than I would however im refering to a R34 I saw with chrome graphics and it looked shit (the graphics). When I say shit, I mean real close like within a foot, the owner brang it to my attention and also suggested a spray over. I figured why not.

IMO the car looked hot a hell and I wouldnt have noticed otherwise.

IMO it will end up like a R32 dash or a black bodyboard... Bubbled and crap. especially if there is any moisture under it. More importantly after that 5 year period when you have to replace it how do you do it without ripping off paint with it"?

It will work no worries, it won't bubble crack or peel, it will just depend on the install job.

No vinyl graphics I have ever done has faded (shite vinyl) or cracked and peeling is just a crap install...

It would turn out great I just don't think it is worth it, and I'm sure people will jaw drop over the final price considering its just plain black...

wow $1000 for a 2 colour vinyl thats over the top... complete rip off....

I would have to cover the entire sides or a car in full colour printed vinyl with transparent or chromes over the top to charge $1000....

got your pm 75coupe, i will look for pics.

what colours do you most commonly work with?

is there a specific type/brand of vinyl you would recommend to use to prevent sun damage or fading?

$1000 pricey? yeah for sure!, this is going back around 5 years ago now... that was the cheapest quote she could get for them to custom make the design she desired and to install them. Also being located in TAS she was very limited to places that will custom make a design let alone even fit them on such a large scale.

i am unsure of the price they will charge now, as i wouldnt mind looking at some designs or custom making a specific graphic to suit my R33.

do you custom make designs?

Hmmm. Yeah if you could see the joins close up I wouldn't waste my time, and seems a bit exxy just to see what it would look like.

What would be involved in maintaining the vinyl? I have heard painting a car matt/satin black is a prick to maintain. Would the vinyl be better or worse?

Nick

You gotta remember that most race cars up close don't look that great.

you can do an install on a full car with basically no joins, you just need a good installer.

Showcar or street car installs are way different to a race or drift car, in my opinion.

I dunno how matt colours would hold up I can't see any problem cause you can just clean the vinyl if it gets dirty but abrasions might be a different story to using gloss... It would be interesting to see that r35 with it done in 12mths to see how it has done...

Hey,

Can you recommend anyone for doing the whole car matt black? i want it excatly how that r35 is done.

Thanks,

Manu

where are you?

If your in Perth Try out Fleeting Image, they look like they do full car wraps almost daily...

Otherwise just look for sign shops that handle full car wraps, get ready to be shocked at the price...

im very suprised with people comments about cracking and peeling vinyl or bubbled.... has this happened to there car personally... have they seen it on anyone elses car... i have seen a rushed.. i mean very rushed job bubble... never seen it crack though.... a business that vinyls cars would be quickly out of business if there product was to crack and peel.... i think the term a "good job" isnt what id would descibe good vinyl... more of a Proper Job..... if done correctly they can last for quite some time.... the only thing that usually fades..... may be the paint.. leaving a darker spot on cars where the vinyl was after removal.... if on there for some conciderable time that is.

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
