I got one of the light weight 19 row blue oil cooler kits, and oil keeps leaking from it.

I have tried to replace the o rings with some good quality wurth ones which made no difference.

I then got hold of some locktight paste stuff (hydrolic thread sealant) which is suppossed to hold 1000psi once cured AND IT STILL LEAKS.

Does anyone have any ideas on how i can stop this from leaking? should i just use thread tape?

Its leaking on the fittings that screw onto the sandwitch plate on the block.

Has anyone had this issue before? how did you fix it.

I hate oil leaks more then anything else, leaking 300v chrono is driving me INSANE!!!!

even if you ask justjap themselves, they'll tell you to use thread tape on pretty much all of their parts that are meant to hold oil pressure.

ive tried the justjap oil pressure gauge which leaked until i used thread tape on it, same with the oil cooler kit i had.

yes, chinese oil cooler kits leaking is nothing new. about the only ways out are to try and seal it with thread tape (not a very nice solution), or just chuck it out and buy a nicer kit like one of the japanese ones. i have 2 trust kits at the moment on 2 of my cars and neither has leaked so much as a drop. ever. and no thread tape, or goo, or o-rings needed. just bolt it on and away you go.

if you use thread tape be careful not to let it get into the lines etc.

Ive basically also heard whats already been said in the thread.

That the Just Jap oil cooler kits are well known to require thread tape in most cases to get a good seal, or else you can have problems with leakage.

but most of JustJap parts are chinese crappy knock offs...

Save yourself the headache and go get a Permacool relocation kit & thermostat & and quality B&M core. Same price-"ish" but 300% the quality!

GT - apart from the poorly made / designed block adapter, how do you find the cooler core itself? Does it look reasonable?

Outa interest, what type (standard) of fitting is leaking? Theres not a simple 370 AN / 450 SAE / JIC mix up??

the fittings are all fine. mine leaked when i first installed it in the exact same place. just make sure you do everything up super tight! my kit is perfect and its all looking very mickey mouse! i think they are great... its not like they are actually that cheap anyway...

the fittings are all fine. mine leaked when i first installed it in the exact same place. just make sure you do everything up super tight! my kit is perfect and its all looking very mickey mouse! i think they are great... its not like they are actually that cheap anyway...

I took it to my mate at Turbotechnics and he is going to machine the fittings flat where the O ring goes and replace it with copper washers.

Appart from that the rest of the kit looks OK except for the really long long oil lines.

I lol'd at you using a "china kit"

I asked you about the construction quality of the core.

I then suggested, that the fitting "standards" might have been mixed up, if you've swapped some of the couplers with your own; AN and JIC for example... its quiet a common mistake :D

Use them everyday, if that didn't seal it there must be some inherent problem with the fittings!! (Which GeeTR is getting at)

the problem was that the o rings were not sealing properly.

Turbotechnics took the fittings off, got them machined flat so there is no groove where the O rings used to go and then used copper washers and a decent thread sealant.

took it for a 250km drive last night and it did not leak a drop!

Very happy about that now!

hmmm I used Loctite hydraulic thread sealer 569. but i never used the stock hoses as they were all too long and i didn't fit the cooler core. just don't do what i did and get new lines made up out of Dufield hydraulic hose. its just way to hard and not flexible enough. for in a engine bay.

    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.  
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go       
    • I don't get in here much anymore but I can help you with this.   The hole is a vent (air relief) for the brake proportioning valve, which is built into the master cylinder.    The bad news is that if brake fluid is leaking from that hole then it's getting past the proportioning valve seals.   The really bad news is that no spare parts are available for the proportioning valve either from Nissan or after market.     It's a bit of a PITA getting the proportioning valve out of the master cylinder body anyway but, fortunately, leaks from that area are rare in my experience. BTW, if those are copper (as such) brake lines you should get rid of them.    Bundy (steel) tube is a far better choice (and legal  in Australia - if that's where you are).
