Can anyone who's driven both tell me the pros & cons of the 2.5 litre V6 turbo as against the 3.5 litre naturally aspirated engine in a Stagea?

I know the 3.5 won a bunch of awards a few years ago as one of the best engines going around, but I haven't heard much about the 2.5 turbo.

Also, how do they stack up against each other in terms of fuel economy?

And final question: Is the 3.5 available in a Stagea model with the CVT transmission out of the Skyline 350GT?

The 3.5 litre naturally aspirated produces the same amount of HP as the 2.5 litre V6 turbo but the torque is much better on the turbo. Also if you are in OZ you cannot get compliance yet for the 3.5 litre naturally aspirated. If you into getting mods done the 2.5 litre V6 turbo is the better choice. And no the Stagea does not come with the same 8 speed transmission....wish it did!!

Thanks for the response, but I've seen the figures; what I really want to know is how they drive.

The turbo might have more torque, but if it comes 3,000 revs higher up the range it's not much use to most drivers most of the time.

So if anyone can give me their own impressions from driving both, I'd be very interested.

I can't comment on the 3.5 N/A motor but the 2.5 turbo has 406nm of torque at 3200 rpm so the motor is very easy to drive with out reving it to the red line.

The only problem you have is even if you like the M35 with the 3.5 N/A I don't think even the pre 2004 models can be complied. The only motor in the M35 that has been complied is the 2.5 turbo.

Thanks Andy, that's interesting to hear.

I thought the 3.5 couldn't be complied as well (there's a lot been written about it in these forums, I know), but just the other day I enquired about a M35 Stagea with the 3.5 (2004 model) that was up for sale on J-Spec Imports & the bloke there said it definitely CAN be complied.

He reckons he knows of several workshops that have done all the testing (including pollution tests) and are prepared to put it in writing that they can comply those models.

Does anyone here have an update on the situation?

Also any word on fuel economy of both those engines?

The fuel economy is an interesting discussion. I get around 7.2-7.5 km/l on city (sydney) driving and around 10km/l on highway. Most M35 drivers I have spoken to get similar but there are also some M35 drivers getting in the 9km/l or better in their daily driving. Wish I knew how they get it?

Though they say it could be done easily (as the V35 3.5lt 2004+ has been done and at worst could use the V35 cat converter), but someone has to be the first to buy one and get it happening.

As much as I'd love one, buying an import is risky enough so I'll wait for someone else braver than I.

There are at least 2 members on this forum who could shed some light on just how "easily" it can (or CANT) be done!!

Until someone confirms that one has ACTUALLY been complied, DONT GET ONE. Its too easy for them to back away afterwards if it doesn't work, leaving you with a $25000+ (guessing) car that cant be legally driven on the road.

Personally the 2.5L turbo model would be more attractive to me anyway.

It would build its torque slightly later but if the S2 I previously owned was any indication, the turbo starts spooling the second you touch the throttle, even when just cruising around, so it would have plenty of usable torque.

of all the M35s ive driven then have a huge amount of torque on the bottom, then the top end screams! and throttle response is very fast.

if you have a spare $90K lying around go for it. $30k for the car $60 for when it fails and has to be retested..

they are. any one from 2001 on was DBW.

How does DBW work please?

short version. take the traditional cable that you know and replace it with a computer in the middle. your right foot at one end and a electronic actuator on the other. add to that the abililty to change things on the fly (EG skid control- computer backs off throttle even if you do not.) and it makes things like cruise that much easier. instead of having a dedicated module for cruise it now becomes a number that the computer can remember when the cruise button is pushed and that number is passed onto the throtle actuator.

as for the next post - steering has a angle sensor on it but thats it. you still have direct control of the car :P

may I suggest looking the car in question up on the sevs register. to my knowledge it doesn't comply.

Now I'm not accusing anyone of anything, and I know there are people in this forum who have spent many long & fruitless hours trying to get a 3.5 litre Stagea complied. But I would like to know precisely where it says it's not possible, because according to this page, the only models that can't be complied are the ones with the 2.5 litre non-turbo engine.

Also I'd like to know why J-Spec is telling me one thing & other people something else entirely.

On June 27 this year (less than 2 weeks ago) I got this reply to an email enquiry about a 3.5l Stagea:

We have been advised by numerous workshops after asking many times that compliance is no problem at all (including emissions evidence) for the Stagea M35 with the 3500cc non-turbo engine, it was only the 2500cc turbo which is still undergoing testing for emissions however even that will be finalised within a matter of weeks as the test car has been done now.

If you are interested in this car but have any concerns then I would be happy to put you in touch with a compliance workshop and/or have them put something in writing to confirm that compliance is available for this car immediately.

I reckon the sooner someone can get to the bottom of this the better for all of us.

It also says in the SEV's list that M35 with the 2.5 turbo are approved from 2001 - current. However the ADR's changed in late 2003 and this has stopped (todate) anyone successfully complying a 2004 or later M35 with the 2.5 turbo motor.

I would search out the thread on the problems other members have had with importers/compliance workshops (don't know who was to blame) that have promised cars can be complied only to have the cars sitting in workshops for 12 months and no car to drive.

If you are prepared to take the risk and cost involved in getting the first car approved I wish you luck.

Personally unless I could see a complied car with Australian rego I would not take the risk.

If it is so easy to get complied why are there none in the car yards of the importers?

I would suggest you give Ben a call at NorthShore Prestige Motors. He is one of the compliance work shops that does the M35 turbo cars and has around 3 at all times in his car yard. If it is possible, he would have a good idea about it.

pity they didnt do a turbo diesel VQ25. would have some house pulling power but be half economical :P

    • Cheers. Skyline is back on the menu, can’t get rid of it. It’s like a child you don’t want, or herpes 
    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.  
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
