How's the steel bar work attached to the alloy extrusion chassis?

I believe there is some majorly reinforced gussets which bolt to the rails (you can see it in the render below better on the back legs)

Matt Close had to over come this with some careful cage work, and you know how anal he is about doing things right (Audi's are all alloy chassis too).

Heya all :)

From a rigidity perspective, bonding two dissimilar parent materials would be a great start. Production cars have been doing it for years, so there's some very advanced products out there.

Although I can't see CAMS allowing any non-mechanical (welding/bolting) joining methods anytime soon. The rules don't state you can't do both (bonding for rigidity and bolting to keep CAMS happy)...

Mark :)

Yeah but Close's cage did NOT meet CAMS requirements and as such was never able to be log booked.

Under AASA that didn't matter - not sure what he has planned going forwards though.

Stupid though as Maher sure proved it was up to a serious whack!

Alloy cages for alloy cars, and wooden cages for wooden cars.... problem solved

What are cams going to do if anyone wants to race a new mclaren (road car not gt3)? as the tub/safty cell is probably better than a cage.

When I stayed with him last december he was showing me why it didn't pass (nothing to do with being on an alloy chassis), but im pretty sure its now been resolved.

Heya 2PEE :)

That'd be cool to look over an old skool GrpA GTR. Does he regular SAU? Wouldn't mind popping him a PM and see if he's up for a chat.

No need to make rules to suit. I've scrutineered for CAMS long enough to see many different 'rule interpretations'

Mark!

Yeah, aware of the car....looks better without the bodykit. One of you came up one morning, whilst a minor

dilemma was happening and didn't have much chance for a yarn, never caught up subsequently.

Bloke in question, no, definitely not on SAU, 'bout the closest he'd get to a computer is putting G code in

manually on a keypad - which is close to your heart from memory. Can provide a number, but I'd guess most of the

Sadnut's foibles are pretty well documented now. An acquaintance may have a spare RB26 after putting a proper engine

into his gtr - if the worse should happen.

Precedent was set with the F40 all those years ago...didn't end well.....Octagon rulebook to the rescue??

Nawww you guys.....

Baron, Fair Dinkum Dave was trying to get a hold of you mate.....

thanks woo. spoke to him wednesday. and today. might have a task for you.

Does anyone know if all of the 2011 compeditors are still getting the southen cross footage? The newsletters leading up to the event said we were going too, havn't havn't heard anything since.

Heya 2PEE :)

You know of my previous exploits... I am a CAD/CAM/CNC programmer from waaay back  I'm now in management and off the floor, but still have a play on the machines when I want something fancy!

If you think this guy would be up for a chat some time, could you PM me his number? I'm always up for a nerd to nerd car chat, especially if he has an engineering background!

As for the 'spare' RB26, I'm looking for something built for a trackable/reliable 350kw.

BTW, how do you know shit about me?!?! Damn car scene...

Mark :)

^^^^^ I dont think reliable and RB26 belong in the same sentence :) Or maybe thats an oxy moron. :)

But dont listen to me. I am thinking of going rotary.... Thats a whole new world of unreliability.

But in reality, either engine done right can provide reliable service.

Heya DARSIDE!!

RB26 are indestructible compared to rotors. My first rotor (12a) made it over 250000 kms and was used solely for burnouts before I got it... It split two apex seals on the dyno as we were seeing how far we could go on stock ports. I still drove it everyday for a few months with split seals before replacing her!

If a rotor is built right and is shown some mechanical sympathy, it'll last a very long time. If you want to talk tech about rotors, I'm more than happy to help out, they are what I know well. Take my info, compare it to other workshops and decide what you think is best for your application.

Mark :)

^^^^ That would be great Mark. After having just spoken to racing beat in the US about building a motor for me I am not so sure I want to sell all my organs plus any furure unborn children to have one of their engines. I am sure they are top notch, but circa 20-25k for a rotor engine build (complete long motor with turbo etc) is a bit beyond my budget.

But at the same time, happy to spend decent money to get something I hope will be reliable. Tassie is just too far to go for me to have a mechanical early on.

    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.

    • Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
