yeh when a mate of mine from NZ was telling me wat you could get away with over there in the ways of mods i couldnt believe it..

Yeah its true - though from here it seems pretty much draconian what you guys have to put up with, over here they are looking at making externally venting blow off valves illegal now (already like that there?). Wtf, how does that save our planet? I have been dreading the requirement of catalytic converters but can fully understand and expect them to be a requirement.

I'm personally still in favor of Rob's RB30 build. Not only does it seem like the best deal to me, but it seems like the best way to go if your going to maintain some streetability and drag race it. Not only that, but I've been talking to Rob via e-mail and he is one of the nicest most helpful guys you will every meet!

Thanks for all the help and co-operation rob! :)

Ive never had dealings with RIPS/Rob, but am constantly hearing/seeing countless remarks of praise like the above for his work/attitude/service/value, goes without saying that id like to get an engine off him one day just for the experience let alone the awesome custom fab work!

As for the stock-stroke Rb26 that i want for my GTS-t, Paul seems like the man for that one :(

That blue 34 sounded f**king ugly at idle :blink:nothing like a nice throbbing lumpy idle of a well worked RB26 IMO, that thing sounds like its about to die lol but credit where due once the foot was put up her she did sound tasty. :P

I checked the rips site, the stock internal bottom ends good for 600 hp/7200 rpm Starting from 5grand?? I could chuck 5k worth of aftermarket parts at a RB26 block and be better off? Its stock components :) they maybe good and up to it but you could get better and more for the same price?

Forged RB30 Bott0m end from 17g ,wheres the head mate?

I have a fully built 9 second 26 engine sitting here on a stand that cost me low 20k to build.fully prepped and balanced chock full of the best nismo, hks, jun etc etc parts , plus a fully esembled head that has been ported shimmed and has tomei cams etc etc.back toogeather waiting for a manifold and turbo to arrive..

You havent built a head for your forged bottom end yet..let alone all the other bits like fueling, ecu ,cooling etc etc.

Other than a bit more torque to get the bigger turbo moving I think its a waste of money when you could chuck less at a RB26 and get the same result a 9 second street car.

If we could compare doller for doller Id have more left over and dollers to spend elsewhere on my car..

I havent had any perk jobs done either from mates and piss..

Credit to you Rips though..you are a good salesman and the poms seem to love your work :)

Oh,these HP claims.,they are all a bit iffy on a rolling road dyno, have you got dynapack graphs to compare your work?

The more and more RH9 cars I see from Japan, they almost all use HKS 2.8 strokers with HKS head parts. I checked the max Rpm for the HKS stokers and head components and they both said 10,000+Rpm. I'm starting to realize the build whats proven theory.

Yes I have seen those, but what about the cars that have been built in japan before RIPS was building his setups? That kinda says something to me.

Not bashing Rob is anyway at all, he is an amazing guy! But this is why i'm so torn on what I want to do :P

www.xe.com, in there you will find a NZD to AUD converter, use that before posting nonsense.

RIPS RB30 awd stock rebuild 600hp/7200rpm from rips (new bearings, trust oil pump, 4wd block adapter, sump, and all the other mods) = $4080 AUD. Try building a similar rb26 thats can make that power, torque and response for 4 grand. You can even sell your stock rb26 bottom end off for lets say of $1000+ making it $3000 for a 600hp bottom end.

The "17kNZD" Rb30 fully forged bottom end ready to bolt up = 13,700AUD, thats a 1200hp bottom end for 13K, with the benifit of torque/response over the rb26. Sell your stock rb26 bottom end for $1000+ and put on the rips rb30 and you can have a 1200hp bottom end for around 12,500 AUD, sounds like a great deal to me, no wonder r.i.p.s are selling these by the dozens.

Some how i dont think you can come close to beating that.

Japan isn't the holey grail of tuning, the advantage they *had* over the rest of the world is they were doing it years before anyone else. They had access to the cars redily. Classic example is gibson motorsport r32 gt-r, aussie's were making that car a hell of alot faster than the japs were back then. the fastest gtr in the world is from nzd, supra's in the states are doing 8 second passes on dot tyre's no problems.. i'm the most diehard fan of imports and japanese tuing but even i've learn't that today the tuning scene is a whole 'nother ball game where alot of companys aroud the world are on par with each other.. not just catching up to japan..

I'm not saying anyone is better that anyone else, but why limit yourself to just one country's way of things?

9 sec pass in what car?

Has it done the 9 sec pass yet?

Did you build the motor yourself?

What parts did you use? Care to list up all the bits?

That is a very good point you have made. I guess I'm not thinking with my head on this subject. But like I said before rob has also proven what he can make these cars do ... so I guess since I started this topic to see what people prefer, I got good turn outs.

I am also still leaning towards the R.I.P.S kit by the way.

Rob if you are still involved with this thread could you throw up a mod list on the Blue RB30 R34 GT-R for the guys here.

Rips built R34 GTR = http://rips.drag-r.com/ or you can log onto gtr.co.uk for the 400 page long build thread from start to ts 9.7 maiden first 1/4 mile pass..

the funny thing is.. the guy didnt even look on the rips website first as i pulled this from there site a couple seconds ago.

"RB30 Bare forged bottom ends (short block), start at NZD$10,450 (suit minimum 750hp and 8000 rpm)"

Hey Jonn,

you have a step 1 HKS stroker kit in your car... having seen all the rips engine packages , costings and this thread would you buy another HKS stroker kit or a RIPS built RB30 if you had to do it over again?

Surely your car with a stroker kit can atleast reach a 10 second pass?

What value do you place on piston oil squirters. Is there a quality difference between the locally produced older 30 blocks as opposed to the jap sourced 25/26 blocks?

I dont have a horse in this race but i believe they are interesting questions. Anyone?

As far as i'm aware sydneykid used rb25 oil sirters on his own rb30 combo but said they wern't really needed in the end from memory.

You could either do that or could get the piston skirts heat treated which wouldnt coast very much, but again from memory the guys doing rb30's haven't had any heating problems or lubrication wear so its not really a problem..

I'm sure rob from rips would be able to tell you more accurately what they do than me :)

Yeah, its amazing what a currency converter can do. Works out to be $8,500 for 750hp minimum/8000rpm+..

The word RIPS use here is From..When Rob started out on SDU many years ago the price was "from" but always ballooned out to more, that is not a quote, tread wisely.

Where in the 600hp/7200rpm build does it mention "new" bits and a trust oil pump? Rob used to use all preloved/used factory bits and a new factoryoil pump.this could of changed though.

A RB26 bottom end Will support 600hp no worrys mate, Id rather spend that money towards the head on the 26 and chuck in some poncams etc etc ,as Rob says ,its all in the tune at how reliable the engine will be :) and BTW you still need to find a head to put on this godlike block ,why doesnt he use the single cam one that came from the 30? :) oh thats right its a hybrid engine so cannotall be atributed to the 3 litre..it still needs a 26 or 25 head to work.

Now you want to talk Nonsense..17g on a 1200 hp forged bottom end??You get this 1200 hp from where?Rips? haha rightttttttt..

Rob do you still use that shitty old rolling road dyno ? Iv seen dyno plots on a 300zx where there was 100kws atw difference between that dyno and a dynapak one..the dyno you use giving this higher reading. :)

What sort of HP were the two fastest GTRs in NZ claiming? I know from someone working at St Hi Tec in auckland New Zealand that HT were round the 1200 hp mark.Does this bring it into perspective yet?(The car was using the ST dynapak for tuning)

Once you drop under 10seconds on the 1/4 0ne second is a long way off and thousands more dollers so 2 seconds is f**kin miles away, there is weight difference here also granted but wake up and smell the coffee here guys.

A surpposed 1200hp bottom end to get into the nines, its already been noted that you can get into the nines on 2530s a near 500- 600hp difference??? 1200 hp?um right.

The thread starter wanted to know what strokerkit he would need to become a true Rh9 car..he also listed that "keep the 26" as an option..

My choice would be work on the 26 and save your money..2530s on a 26 are a beautiful set up for a street GTR.It has been said here that it has taken cars into the 9s .It wouldnt be my choice ,Id use a T04z,No matter what these so called "Internet Turbo Gurus" tell you ,that turbo will get you there and is very streetable if tuned correctly..My proof has already been revealed here in this thread ,2530s did it so the T04z will easily thats all that needs saying.

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
