Blown rear turbo :D

damn good news as ive had the car for 2 months......

Sorry to hear that dude.

Do a compression check and leak down test when you get the chance to work out if the motor copped a dusting from ceramic particles.

well my mechanic says it seems to look ok? they found the turbine wheel stuck in my cat :D

It might start and run but, you might find there is a drop in compression/increase in leak in one or more pots.

It's nice to know about it so you don't cop any more rude shocks later. Only takes a little bit of time to check.

sorry let me reiterate.... "at a first look" he said the engine sounds/looks ok, no visible damage.

they did a compression test today 170,171,170,159,161,170 so 4 and 5 are down by a total of 20 but to me that pretty good for a 20 year old car.

and no damage to the internals!!!! some good news lol.

now i just need to decide 2860 - 5 or - 7????

any1?

The rear turbo went so that accounts for the rear pots 20% leakage. That is a fair whack more ithan acceptable especially if the other pots aren't even. It tells you that they have been ceramic dust 'sanded'. The bore and rings aren't going to be happy at all. Not to mention anything down in the friction parts of the oil galleries the ceramic particles have managed to work themselves into.

Long story short is that Slapping some bigger turbos on this motor will basically kill it pretty fast. I would be getting yourself a rebuilder motor onto a stand and just build it up as you go till the day comes.

In the mean time give the motor a seriously good flush and tune it to 'nanna spec' till the new motor is ready to go in.

If your lucky the engine may kick along for quite some time with fairly normal driving.

o shit.... more f**king money....

ill get my mech to take a good long look at the internals and make sure it hasnt damaged the rings etc.... or basically give me an estimated time of death of my current engine..... i cant believe something so small can cause so much damage..... its f**king BS.

thanks for the insight tho :)

yeah look probably just save the money on the mechanic having another look, your rings in 5 & 6 are damaged end of story I'm afraid (leak down test shows you this) You have the basic data so really I'd say just stick to nursing the motor along till you are ready to upgrade the motor.

The RB's are tough and will often hang in there for some time when treated well. This buys you some time to save.

what leak down test? i didn't see any leak down figures posted? he just posted the compression test results and none of them are 20% down, nor did he say 20% leak down (unless I'm going batty!). 10psi is only about 6 or 7% down on the other cylinders and that variance is acceptable. not perfect but still ok. Don't get me wrong, the engine may well be stuffed as it's quite common after the factory turbos fail, but so far the test results don't show anything...

sorry I think I read the 20 as leak down percentage?

Compression tests alone arn't enough really to have confidence. I had my old GTR engine lose a rear turbo, compression tested within a few percent of perfect across every pot ---- yay! , leak down in the rears was a different story 20+% --- doh!

Hopefully it tests well for the leak down too. If so then the motor is cool for now. All the same having another one ready to go is a smart move if there are bigger turbo's planned.

if you just lost the one turbo, the most sensible option could see would be to just replace the one turbo with a stock second hand replacement, that way you arent throwing too much money at the engine. otherwise you could look at the 2530 kit, they are a direct bolt on with not too much lag and enough room to play with if you decide to upgrade the engine later on.

depends on how much money you want to spend but from the sounds you want the most affordable option until you sell your GTSt and can buy a R34 motor and swap

2nd hand GTR turbos for about $1500 (inc labour)

2nd hand GTR Hi-Flowed turbos $3700 (LMAO WTF)

GT2860 -7s or GT2860 -5s for $4100

makes sense, have a look at the cat while in there, maybe time to hit it now with dump pipes if buying a turbo kit

I hope those prices include install, new engine oil, GST and a happy ending

a happy ending is not a night in a cheap motel where you wake up the next morning unable to remember the night before, next to a dead stripper called candy

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
